In this morning's Washington Post:
"I have been driving in Northern Virginia for more than 40 years. I have never seen the road conditions more dreadful. In local politics, the No. 1 rule is “fix the potholes.” Often while merging onto Interstate 395, I drive in the breakdown lane to avoid the carpet-bombed road conditions. It is hard to process how one of the wealthiest areas of the nation can have Third World roadways.
Sadly, the few patchwork efforts to repair the roads have led to rough asphalt quilts. State officials need to inform the citizenry where once-adequate road-repair funds have gone. One can only imagine what condition the roads will be in after this winter. These treacherous potholes will hurt our cars and possibly people as well. We need some concrete answers."
I completely agree. Another basic repair would be to replace above-ground electrical wires with underground wires. Mass widening of roads needs to happen throughout the county, and finding more mass transit solutions (extend Metro Yellow line to Ft. Belvoir, blue line to Burke VRE).
Nobody likes paying taxes. But it's worth it to improve our everyday lives. In the meantime, you're probably going to pay as much or more in car repairs and lost productivity and time.

Even more than the beltway, 95, and 66... Our major county arteries need to be not just repaired, but improved.
Rts 50, 29, 7, 236, 1, 123, Braddock Road, fair Lakes Perkway, ffx county partkway throughout the entire county are horrible. Pushes tons of people to try to find cut-throughs through communities on roads not meant to handle the extra traffic too, and so those deteriorate and also get clogged in the process.

The roads are a lost cause. We have to spend our money on public transit. We can maintain the roads we have now but not improve them or build new ones. If you look at what people are spending on cars and their related expenses now it is a hell of a lot of money that can go to public transit.
We will need to start with huge tax penalties on households that have too many cars. We need more bike lanes, more zipcars, more buses and taxi's. Roughly half of the privately owned vehicles in this area need to go!

Voters and taxpayers can be so clueless.
99% of all roads and streets in Virginia are owned by VDOT -- not the local Counties. The only exceptions are Henrico and Arlington which do own most of their own roads.
Most road maintenance funding has been stripped from the road maintenance fund and given to the new roads construction fund. All of this is the responsibility of the House of Delegates and the Senators in the Virginia General Assembly. They have been worthless in terms of providing the needed resources for repairing and maintaining the streets.
FFX County has provided some of its own money for high priority transportation projects -- but it does not own the roads. Some FFX County officials do get to help set the priorities for spending the meager amounts available for road construction and maintenance. But VDOT owns the roads.

Of course everybody wants to drives their own vehicle as much as they want whenever they want and nobody wants a huge tax increase to fund the enormously expensive public transportation projects that will be absolutely needed in the upcoming decades.
I can see within the next 20 to 30 years each licensed driver in the DC metro area, regardless of the number of personal vehicles owned, will be allowed a to drive a rather minimal amount of non transferable "free" miles (say 5K annually) that can be driven with in the DC metro area per year (of course this will not include tolls, fines etc. etc.) . By then the technology and infrastructure will be available to allow this data to be recorded and enforced (can you say big brother?). Any additional miles over the free allotment will be taxed at an incremental rate and billed to the driver. Of course there will be no limit to the amount of "free" miles that one, living in the DC metro area, can travel per year outside the DC metro area, however other large metropolitan areas will likely adopt similar policies.

The entire process of taxes and maintaining the roads is a FUBAR. I found out last year that VDOT has to do the snow removal on the 495 express lanes and the new 95/395 express lanes, and does not get paid back for that. That's a few million dollars a year. That money alone would fix the pavement in the exit from 495 south to 395 north that is in the original posters comments. Who ever agreed to that should be kicked out of the state an no pension for them. Why waste the tax payers dollars to help a private company make money. If that's the case some plow my streets in my private neighborhood. ok im done
