That's an interesting alignment proposal you had. I like it.

The person objecting to Stuart having to travel to Herndon under this hypothetical line up needs to relax. It's better than what we have now, with Hayfield having to travel to South Lakes. McLean and Langley aren't exactly close to Hayfield, either. And, having the conferences about the same size is an important goal, if it can be achieved. Of course, this is hypothetical, and assumes that the next alignment will move TJ, Marshall, and Edison up to 6A.

WIth that set of schools in 6A, your #1 and #2 are perfect. You could consider placing Falls Church and Stuart with group #3, and switching Madison and Marshall over to #4, though the resulting conference #3 (Yorktown, W-L, McLean, Langley, TJ, Stuart, and Falls Church) wouldn't be as strong as the other three in football.

And for football, it really doesn't matter how they are aligned, because the region uses an overall playoff from a point system. And if you have a region of 15 schools, do you need a playoff for each conference in basketball, baseball, etc.? You could just take the top four from each conference to a region playoff rather than having a conference tournament for no purpose but to seed teams. Shortens the season too.

If all those Fairfax schools move up, 5A gets interesting.

Lee and Wakefield would join Briar Woods, Broad Run, Potomac Falls, Stone Bridge, and Tuscarora - but that's only enough for one conference. You would have to go to Prince William, Stafford, and Spotsylvania to make the rest of one region of 12-15 schools.

I think you meant to say that would not be enough for one "region." Seven schools are enough for one conference. I think the new VHSL alignment will see two conferences in each region.

Yes, I believe that is what I said:

Fairfax, Arlington, and Loudoun = Conference A
Prince William, Stafford, 95 Corridor = Conference B
Conference A + Confernce B = Region 1

For those lamenting a school like Hayfield or Wakefield traveling to Briar Woods...

You do realize that in a lot of parts of the country the NEAREST school to play is in the next county, right?

For some the arch-rival might be 30-40 minutes away or farther. Not uncommon at all. My wife's family is continually astonished that we have a school system of 25 high schools. Theirs is 1 HS, 1 MS, 1 ES. They travel across regions of the state for games.

In a lot of parts of THIS STATE even. This region is unique, and I think many here are getting frustrated with the constant changes proposed by the VHSL. North just wants to be left alone to do their thing because they are a compact but populated area. But it isn't like that pretty much anywhere else in the state, and they are trying to tweak things to better accomodate those others. In the end, it isn't too much of a hassle. In 6A, Northern Virginia is half of the schools, so they can have one of two regions, or two of four, no big deal.

Yup. In Texas, 2-3 hour bus rides each way are not unheard of.

The Westfield/Oscar Smith 2007 game came down to kicking/punting. Like this year, Westfield had great kicking/punting. Oscar Smith's was nowhere near Westfield's.

The rest of the teams were about even or advantage OS.

For kicking, yes, but, on 4th downs near midfield, Scanlon often punts with an option run/pass.

Agreed. Next man up in Westfield's continuing sequence of great punter/kickers.

And... Scanlon gives Westfield additional 4th down punt/run/pass options. If he punts, he's got good control to the corners/out of bounds.

Smith out Transfers,

Coach Morgan talked about the "Smith Way" when they defeated Indian River that had at least 2 of his former players transferred on their team as well as a couple of the better players from other schools too. I am assuming here but I believe the "Smith Way" he is referring to is the old school coaching ideas that have been successful for the legends like Coach Lombardi, Bob Knight, and Mike Krzyzewski. Good players become great by becoming better men first. AND, By doing all the little things perfectly first and to the point they become second nature, the hard things become surprisingly simple to achieve.

The problem is that with some bad influences in the head of some star players, the goal of becoming great becomes greater than the process to get there. Some let their friends tell them they don't need to put up with Coach Morgan's tough and demanding requirements. Others listen to their arrogant parents that see $$$ and an NFL career despite the long odds against them. Last are the Middle School Club Coaches that over reach and think they are talent agents / handlers. In any case they attempt to back the coach in a corner and threaten to leave if Johnny doesn't start, or play running back, etc, etc, etc. Guess what, Coach Morgan knows that player is too disruptive to make his team a family and highly successful. So, he doesn't play the game their way but he still offers support for them if he can help, even if they leave!

I realize I might be biased, but if you are considering only the three confirmed openings, it's Fairfax, and by a long shot. If TCW is in the mix, I'd still give it to Fairfax, but by a smaller margin.

I realize that Coach Simonds (outgoing HC at Fairfax) has come in for criticism on these boards, but I really think he was a good head coach for most of his career at Fairfax. However, I would definitely say that he did not do a good coaching job this year (I'd think that even he would say that). And, I think that the coaching was the main reason for Fairfax's bad season. When you consider what the 2014 JV team did last year (2014) reeling off four consecutive wins to end their season, 62-0 over McLean, 54-15 over Marshall, 13-6 over Stone Bridge, and 34-0 over South Lakes, this year's varsity team should have been better. However, they weren't as well prepared for games as they should have been. The offensive scheme really didn't suit them, and there was some baffling in-game play calling which lead to a few of those losses. Talent wise, that team should have had a record at worst, 3-7, and at best, 5-5 (which would have been enough to make the playoffs).

If you look beyond that, Fairfax has some talent and depth. There is still a lot of interest in football at the school, and unlike Stuart or Mt Vernon, no shortage of kids interested. In fact, I'd say one problem this year was that there were TOO MANY kids on the team. It's a good situation for a new coach, because this year's JV team went 5-3. and they were competitive in all of those losses except Madison. There is a lot of talent on the JV team, which is mostly class of 2018. The Class of 2017 is relatively thin in terms of numbers, includes a talented receiver/linebacker, a talented running back who also played defensive secondary, and our best offensive lineman from this year's varsity team, who should anchor next year's line. The class of 2018 is even more talented. Though some of those kids dressed varsity, they were mostly kept together on the JV, so they should be a good unit for the next two years.

Fairfax also has good facilities, though Mt. Vernon's aren't bad. Fairfax also has good community support. Attendance dwindled late in the season, but there were still decent crowds at the games, considering fans were watching a 1-9 team.

For all of these reasons, I'd say Fairfax is the best job among the current openings.

2) Mount Vernon (easy schedule should help)
3) T.C. Williams (unreal expectations. Remember the Titans was a movie)

87) JEB Stuart (their soccer team won two games)

You think Mt. Vernon has an easier schedule than the others? They play Lake Braddock and South County, don't forget.

You all know that there is underage drinking on every HS football team. The WF players were just the dumb ones that got caught. Enlighten me as to which "rules" the schools have been breaking for many years please...

I'm curious as to how suspending 6 players, 5 bring starters, is flouting the rules. Actually, there has been success despite following the rules. It is a great example, as lessons were learned by both the kids who got suspended and the ones who didn't.

There is no doubt some schools go easy on the academic requirements, especially since the eligbility period is the semester BEFORE. This mean seniors who don't play a winter or spring sport don't have to do anything during the fall semester.

Fairfax has to be looked at as the best job of those four schools. It's not even close.

Then T.C. Williams, Mt. Vernon and a distant fourth would be Stuart.

T.C. Williams has at least two winning seasons in 10 years and has never gone 0-10 or 1-9 during that time.

Mt. Vernon has had one winning season in the last 10 years and gone 0-10 twice and 1-9 during that time.

Poor JEB Stuart has gone 0-10 twice, 1-9 three times, 2-8 three times and had one winning season at 6-4 during those 10 years.

I understand they cut a deal with the VA authorities and admitted to the Dixie cup episode so they would not have to have a much bigger penalty around what really happened that would have put the season in peril.

This is just the same disgruntled Centreville fan that mucked up this thread a few pages ago. Same IP, same verbiage, same MO. Give it up bro.

Enjoy watching Westfield at states, you know, the program that followed FCPS rules and suspended 5 of the 6 players drinking and kicked the other off the team.

Westfield has some good fortune in terms of a solid base of athletes year after year, but they also have been able to keep coaches together. I know some parents complain about a few but that is always going to happen. A very, very solid program. Their kids always seem to be prepared.

I am not going to say what concorde aka conference 5 school my son goes to, but you have to tip your hat to the guys running the program...very good results year in and year out.

I hope they bring home the title...back to Nova...back to the old concorde.

They will be at least OK and probably better than that. The JV defense was also extremely good this past season, and the offense will have R.Johnson back at QB, Frimpong and Eckert at receiver, and possibly Asante at RB (Frosh this year, getting snaps late in the game throughout the playoffs). Asante needs to get stronger to withstand a full year of varsity and learn more, but I believe he is the RB of the future for the Bulldogs unless someone else senior to him steps up.

They will be okay but this defense they had this year was the best they've had in awhile, probably ever.

Those aren't my words but those of a few Westfield coaches.

Might be sometime before we see another as good.

Hope they have one more left in the tank for tomorrow.....

I guess the defense will be fine considering JV allowed 18 points all year and shut out 6 teams. The freshmen seem to be a really gifted group on offense. That mixed with a good coaching staff will always make Westfield a NOVA contender. Robinson looks like they will remain good and South Lakes seem like they are on an upward trend. Idk about the other schools like Centreville tho, all 3 teams were mediocre this year.

Same here. Never root for Westfield, but found myself rooting for them against Lake Braddock and South County. Especially against South County because of their big mouthed delusional fans.

Make them punt, send 10 guys, balls to the wall.

Even a roughing penalty doesn't hurt you. Could have just as easily fumbled in any of the OT's, like they did all second half.

Took in both games. Wow - the afternoon game was HOT. Unfortunately it looked to me like the Stone Bridge defense just simply wilted away with about 2 minutes left in the 3rd. Fortunate for Westfield they got the evening game - a lot cooler. And fortunate they got Oscar Smith i/o of Highland Springs. Those Springers were quite the team.

But props to Westfield for hanging in there. I knew OS would fight back into the game unlike South County and Lake Braddock. This is where playing teams like Robinson and Centreville (yes, Centreville this season) in tough battles helped season Westfield for this type of game.

Happy to see officiating not really much of an issue - there was a totally bogus roughing the punter call that helped OS back into the game. But on the other hand Westfield got away with a pretty blatant hold on one of their TD's.

That being said Westfield dominated the offensive line of scrimmage and if they hang on to the football they win by 3 TDs no question. Kudos to the Westfield coaching staff - they totally changed their defense for this game to help counter the OS passing attack (3 DL i/o 4). Let up some plays obviously but only gave up 21 points in regulation.

The last several series of the game OS dropped their help against #10 and left their DB alone one-on-one. Can't believe Westfield didn't go that way a couple of times.

Congratulations to Westfield. Your fans were definitely a class act compared to Centerville from years past.

It was the battle that was predicted. I left this game so confused with my emotions. The Smith quarterback performed very well but yet threw 3 key interceptions, I am both proud and upset.

There were calls missed by the refs, (likely for both teams) but overall, I'm glad they let both teams play. too.

Obviously,Westfield fans are estatic for the win but at the same time I'm sure they can't believe their team lost so many fumbles and the all star kicker missed 2 field goals!

In the end, it looked like Westfield just had too many fresh legs compared to Smith's players that played both sides of the ball all knight. I think Smith benefits in the same manner when they play smaller schools too.

What a season, I only hope the same 2 teams meet again in C'ville next year!

Any team coming out of the North would have beat this Smith team. Way down from years past, how did they beat Ocean Lakes? Since you mention Centreville (not Centerville) any past State Finalist Centreville team would have beat either of these teams by 14. Great win for NOVA Football!

This Westfield team not as good as the past ones, even those that lost the Region finals, but you can only play who is on your schedule and today, once again, they are back on top of the mountain. WF O-line would drive HS into the dirt. They manhandled OS' D-line all game long and Smith has a much more talented defense than Highland. It would not have been pretty.

You're kidding right? I wasn't aware that he played D as well since Westfield hung 40 on SOCO. No, it wouldn't have made a difference at all. The Westfield team everyone saw over their last 3 games is what all the so called experts new they had the potential to be at the beginning of the season. Just had some obstacles to overcome which inevitably is probably why they were able to turn it on. That and moving some pieces around.

At the risk of incurring the wrath of the internet I will make some 2015 review posts. Since I am sick and bored I went back and added up the final record of our guru steve k2*.

Including playoff picks:

Vs Spread: 99-87-4
Outright: 158-32

Not bad I would say - in theory, you want the point spread to be 50-50 so that was darn close. He also was consistent in picking Westfield from the start as the 6A North champion and stuck with that pick even when they were not looking so good on offense.
