Mount Vernon High School F's down 50% since last year
Posted by: FCPS DATA MAN ()
Date: December 11, 2014 05:14PM

Mount Vernon High School had about 1400 FS doing the first quarter of the 2013-2014 School year, This year Mount Vernon had a total of 711 F'S doing the first Quarter of the 2014-2015 school year.. Why you ask? Do you think they kids are doing their work? Do you think they are doing in Tests? the answer might surprise you, The question to that is NO= The reasons F's went down is because the lowest grade a student can earn on anything is a 53% So if a students Fails to turn in homework he gets a 53%......Do you think this is fair?? MVHS might not have as many FS as last school year, but SOL Score will still be 50% I hope they fire the principal and they go back to giving regular schools not just 53!!!

This is pretty standard practice in FCPS now. I don't agree with this policy as both an educator and a parent but it's where we are headed. Say what you will about Mrs. King but again this is where the county is headed.

Don't believe me check the policies at Madison, Lake Braddock, as well as Woodson. They have similar ones at least eight high schools in the county have no zero policies.

There are also a number of schools where homework is either not allowed to count as a grade or can be no more than 10% of the grade.

Teachers are very not in favor of these policies but we are saddled with them as it's the "wave of the future."

We can't have kids fail because God forbid they learn that you learn through failure....we're raising a generation mentally inept midgets all who are apparently have learning disabilities (this is an in thing to...my kid needs an IEP or a 504 because they're special).

Anyway, I see the stuff people say about MVHS (I used to work there and thought it was a good school and working their taught me a lot) but please understand the grade inflation that you see is happening everywhere and that in and of itself is absolutely frightening.

I know Madison High School has the policy Well Madison started it last year, they had a total at about 230'S Fs on 2013-2014 school year. Before they added that "policy" that school had about 280s FS. So it didn't have a big difference with the new policy. This is how I would run the school if I was the principal. Students will get lows grades if they earn a low grade. 0'S Stays. BUT IF A STUDENT PASSES THE SOLS IN THE CLASS HE WOULD Automatic pass the class!
Would you like that policy?

This is socialism with grades. I don't think it's fair. Lets say we have two students Jimmy and Tessa. Jimmy earns an 53% in his Geometry Test, but studied very hard, and turns in all his homework, and Tessa never turns in her homework and doesn't even try in her Test. they would both earn a 53% in the test how is that fair?

And to think it's coming right as many colleges are making SAT scores optional or not even considered.

So you have grade inflation and no standardized impartial scoring assessment of students. Lots of kids getting into college who have no business being there racking up 10's of thousands in debt that they cannot discharge in bankruptcy and leaving after a year.

This would be fun to watch if it weren't so fucking cruel to today's kids.

It's fair because in reality little Jimmy is a fuck up too.

This is not standard practice in all FCPS high schools. The ones who have a faculty not cowed by spurious research and weak administrators have rejected this silly policy. This entire no 0 trend was started about 5 years ago by an educrat in Canada and it spread south. There is nothing like a big fat 0 on an interim to spur a kid to make up the work missed ASAP. If students think they can be "given" a 53 for just existing, there is no incentive to work harder. Try to bring this attitude to the work force or to college. Schools with this policy are in actuality guilty of child abuse. They have such low expectations for their students that they give them meaningless grades for doing nothing thus infantalizng them. Parents should be outraged and demand the practice stop. The only other alternative is to do away with grades altogether.

Considering most will end up on welfare and/or in jail, what's the point of educating them anyhow?

There shouldn't be anything lower than an "F". There shouldn't be "A Super F" which is what happens when a test grade is given at 34%, 23%, 18%, etc. Son had a FCPS Latin teacher who routinely had median test grades below failing, well below 50%. No curve. It was insane. It was a statistical impossibility, after receiving a bad test grade, to raise one's numeric class grade to even the level of an F. I lost a lot of respect for FCPS. The class was allowed to sink like a stone.

she wasn't a good teacher, but as a whole what was your son's gpa? life sucks and life isn't fair. For Example some teacher loves failing students. What did the principal do to that teacher? I think a 53 is not fair, because a student will not study and why do homework when I get 53% for just being alive?

Maybe the gradebook it set up that way.

FINAL EXAM:
Students will take a comprehensive final exam in English 9. The final exam is structured much like the English SOL that students will take in eleventh grade. The final exam will count as 1/5 (20%) of a student’s overall grade in English 9.

MVHS Grading Policy:
• Mt. Vernon High School has a consistent, school-wide policy stating that homework shall be no more than 10% of a student’s grade.
• Mt. Vernon High School supports extra credit that is content-based only.

LATE WORK
We expect that all students will complete all of their work one hundred percent of the time. Teachers expect students to complete and turn in assignments even if they are late. If work is late for any reason other than an excused absence, students have the opportunity to turn in late work for a half-letter grade or 3.33% deduction for each school day that it is late until the date set by the teacher prior to the end of the quarter or until the grade reaches 53% (F).
Late work interventions can include:
• After 2 assignments are missed in a bi-weekly period, the teacher will notify the parent via progress report, e-mail or phone call.
• The teacher will keep the student after school for assistance in completing the missing assignments.
• When a pattern of missed assignments is observed, the teacher will contact his administrator and/or counselor for further intervention.
