Assisted Living Facility to be Built on Silas Burke Property
Posted by: That Other Guy ()
Date: December 10, 2014 02:07PM

The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors authorized a comprehensive plan amendment that would change the zoning of the Silas Burke property at 9617 Burke Lake Road from R-1 to R-3. This would permit an 82 unit 3 story assisted living facility to be built on the property. The FFX Cty Planning Commission recommends approval of this change. The Silas Burke house itself would be preserved, but the 5 acres of open space surrounding this property would become a huge facility and parking lot. This facility would be clearly visible form Burke Lake Road.

Public Hearings on this matter are scheduled as follows:
Planning Commission public hearing: Thursday, December 11, 2014 at 815 p.m.
Board of Supervisors public hearing: Tuesday, January 27, 2015 at 4:00 p.m.

More info here: http://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/dpz/comprehensiveplan/amendments/2014-iii-p1.pdf

The BOS will not be happy until all open space in Fairfax County is gone!

That is a major bummer for those houses that back up to that open area.

Nothing lasts forever and major bummers are a part of life. Live long enough and you'll confront the truth in that.

A major bummer would be having to spend your retirement years in Fairfax.

Good news for the BVFD.

There will be dozens of additional calls now picking up the dead and dying just like they do already across the street.

Overtime baby!

yeah, the BOS never met an "amendment" that favors big business that it didn't like! That house and it's property are central to this whole area's heritage. Silas Burke owned over 600 acres of surrounding area originally and he was THE central guy, involved in dozens of local offices and he donated a huge portion of land to the railroads. It's very sad that the BOS would allow that last remaining original Burke land to be developed instead of finding a way to save it for this area's heritage. 8(

Perhaps you could offer some legislation to use the grassy area behind the fairfax government center for some retail shops. A mattress store, title loans, 7-11, and maybe even a pharmacy or an El Loco Pollo restaurant.

After all, bidness iz bidness.

The roads in that area of Burke are in poor condition. That will add significant traffic to the area. Seems like there's a lot of open space left in McLean and Vienna.

A person has the right to develop their land. If you don't like it, than you should have bought it. If you want open land, than this isn't the county for you

The owner has the RIGHT to develop the land according to the zoning rules n place, which isn't happening here. OTOH a retirement home is likelier to be better than the kind of cheesy McMansion type neighborhoods a developer would likely construct if zoning wasn't changed.

NO!

The assisted living facility should NOT be built ON Silas Burke Property.

There's already an assisted living facility in Burke across the road from
the Silas Burke Property.

Let the Silas Burke Property the way it is!

Too Late! Already approved by BOS, nobody showed up at the Planning Commission public hearing last week to protest the zoning change. Final chance to protest is January 27, 2015 at BOS public hearing, which is just a formality to comply with state law.

The surrounding HOAs know nothing about this. Won't the residents be surprised when the bulldozers show up early next year and start moving land to make way for the 4 story assisted living complex.

First they will have to relocate the Native American cemetery from where the assisted living facility is planned to go. I remember seeing an old map with the location.

The land owner, only identified as Daniel S. a regional sports enthusiast, wishes to develop the property and move the ancient Indian burial ground to an undisclosed location in Landover MD for personal reasons involving a curse of some sort.

The new extended care buildings on the site will be used for the dozen of fired coaches and players expected over the next few decades that never lived up to their hype.

Homeowners unite. We must fight the steamrolling capitalists that aim to ruin Burke. If we don't protest, the SUNSET of the Silas Burke House will be consummated by SUNRISE ASSISTED LIVING.

If you missed the early meetings (see below), please attend the future meetings to make your voice heard. History is at stake. Don't let a REIT (real estate investment trust) based in New York and Connecticut destroy the fabric of our neighborhoods.

Sunrise Development (Silas Burke House) Springfield District. Supervisor Herrity and Planning Commissioner Pete Murphy will host a community meeting where Sunrise Development, Inc. will explain their proposal to construct an assisted living facility on the site on which the Silas Burke home is located (4.95 acres at 9617 Burke Lake Road). Sunrise is proposing to retain and preserve the existing historical home and the character of the setting around the home. The meeting will be November 12, 6:30 p.m. at the West Springfield Government Center.

Unless you can pony up this type of green, the Sunrise Burke House of Assisted Living is a done deal. Pat Herrity is in the pocket of the developers. Here is a list of his campaign contributors. Their voices will be heard loud and clear....all the way to the bank.

I went to the proposed hewring today, Tuesday, Jan 27th. After waiting until 5:30, I found that there was a schedule in ane Board Anit room and the hearing was not listed. Now I see via a Google searsh, that it will be held at 5PM on Tuesday, February 17th.

Rwegareless, with Heatherwood, an assisted livinc care facility almost dirctly across the street, I see no reason why anogher similar facilioty should be built on the Burke propertty. It will generate a lot more traffic to an already opverloaded area. Let's have a big turnout on Februry 17th!
