Well, Mr. Cranky, you obviously didn't do your research before moving here. Our weather is the price we pay for an always growing, recession proof economy.
We have cold, rainy autumns. Winters are dreary, dark, and bleak, punctuated by crippling, killer cold (to buses anyway) and devastating snow storms. Kids can expect to miss a month of school a year (6 months if you are hapless enough to live in Fauquier), and you are expected to supplement their lack of class time with expensive, private tutoring.
Spring lasts for 37 minutes. Then we move on to summer. Ours are oppressively hot and humid, with outbreaks of Malaria and Dengue fever quite common. Oh, you should also know that when Congress is in session our atmosphere can unexpectedly turn to sulfur dioxide, and gravity can fail. Although admittedly not that common, people living here must always be prepared to quickly grab the nearest object affixed to the ground and hold on, lest they be flung into space like fleas off a dog getting a $750 grooming.

Thats where we are . In the Doldrums. No not out in the ocean..here. Lousy weather short days, gloom. We are right now at a period when the sun sets at the earliest. About 447pm . It sets a bit earlier the DEC 21st. The shortest day of the year. It starts right about Thanksgiving then runs till about DEC 12. then the sun will start to set a bit later each day. By Dec 21 we may gain 1 or 2 minutes at sunset, but the sun keeps coming up later each day until after DEC 21. So thats why it the shortest day. Not the day of the early sunset.
Drinkers welcome these days, get off work head to a bar. Years back they did too.Loads of people drunk at this time of the year. Folk that work inside have it worst, Go to work in the dark and get off in the dark, Over eating & drinking is common. Were all in it together. Try getting to a gym or pool after work,Fairfax Counties Rec centers are great! Exercise can set your mind right. Take a work out class or other class look at the Park Takes magazine at a rec center and see all the classes available. Get out,in the dark do something with the family if you can get them to move.. Try some new recipe , Go to the mall or a store and walk and window shop. Oh well it will pass and Jan 10th you will see some light in the sky at twilight, The sign its coming back.. and it comes back FAST! After it starts!

DC is gloomsville from December to mid March. Every now and then you'll get something more cheerful. But in general - cold, damp, dreary, brown grass, bare trees with occasional "wintery mix" and sub zero freezes - that is what you can look forward to in the winter. Spring is really nice though so just wait until March..

the earth's axial tilt is away from the sun.
it actually happens a few months after the solar winter - luckily for us
it's summer in all of the southern part of the globe (ie, south america). one reason their farms are doing well. excellent soil and summer all year round.
