People are outraged and people are protesting, though they aren't marching. It would be fairly unusual to see marching in Fairfax County. John Geer (it's Geer, not Greer) is white. Whites generally don't feel put upon by the police and mistreatment of a white suspect by white police doesn't fit a pattern of racial abuse. In fact I'm not certain there is such a pattern in Fairfax County so even if Geer were black, there may not have been much of a public response. But: the reason we can't evaluate whether there is a pattern or not of racial mistreatment by Fairfax County police is that Fairfax County and its police force do a very poor job of reporting the numbers that would make that evaluation possible. We don't see government reporting in Fairfax County on police use of force, use of guns in the line of duty, deaths and injuries at the hands of police, police cash and property seizures, settlements reached in lawsuits against the police department, and other information that would let the public decide whether the police was doing its job correctly without violating the civil rights of citizens of this county. This is what needs to change.
