Werth to serve jail time for reckless driving conviction
Friday - 12/5/2014, 1:43pm  ET

WASHINGTON - Nationals outfielder Jayson Werth was found guilty of reckless driving in a Fairfax County courtroom Friday and will spend at least five days in jail.

Werth was charged with driving in excess of 100 mph on July 6.

He was sentenced to 180 days in jail, with all but 10 of those suspended. Prosecutors say Werth likely will only serve about half that time. The judge also suspended Werth's license for six months.

In court, the judge admonished Werth saying the beltway "is not a racetrack."

A Virginia state trooper testified that when he pulled over Werth, the baseball star said that he was "pushing his luck."

Werth was caught speeding in his 2011 Porsche GT3 as he entered the Capital Beltway near Georgetown Pike. He was pulled over on the George Washington Parkway for traveling 105 mph in a 55 mph zone.

Werth told the court he thought he was going 90 mph but couldn't be sure because he wasn't watching the speedometer.

Werth signed a seven-year, $126 million contract with the Nationals prior to the 2011 season. He lives in northern Fairfax County.

He will do his 5 nights in a holding cell by himself. No TV or phone if he is smart he will buy a couple of good books to read. Five days alone with no human interaction other than a meal tray being slid in your cell is actually kind of rough.

Jayson should organize a protest, claiming he was arrested doing nothing more than "driving while white".

He's actually a pretty good ball player. He has over 10 years in the majors and has a lot to offer some teams. Wanting to see harm come to him is stupid. Now at this stage in his career he is more valuable as a trade than to keep him. I would keep the pitching staff together for another year and get rid of Werth. Unfortunately they traded La Roche who was a like skilled player and has a good bat. It seems that they are so wrapped up in keeping the apposing players off base that they forget about scoring runs. They will start to break the current team up soon, it has already started in fact, and start looking toward the future because of salary issues as always happens with contending teams. We will have to watch how it all plays out as time for a championship here at home is running out.

Buy books in jail? Are you retarded? It's hard enough to get permission to go to the law library... the books come to you on a cart 2x a week. If you're so lucky/unlucky as to be the 'houseman' you might get one or two decent reads and a fucking copy of a 2 year old Good Housekeeping to beat off to.

Werth is a plus defender with a plus arm. Tenacious hitter with excellent on-base skills and a helpful dash of both speed and power. Hard-working weird guy who helps energize the locker room.

Werth will be 36 in May and is guaranteed $21 million over each of the next three seasons. His trade value is miniscule. And he has a full no-trade clause in his contract.

Not how it works. Fister and Zimmermann are each free agents after 2015. Like Jon Lester in the 2013-14 off-season, they are not going to sign extensions that don't come close to what they could make on the open market. The Nats don't have the resources to make competitive offers to both of them, and they have Ian Desmond, Denard Span, and Tyler Clippard all in the same situation as well. The Nats' best option is to trade one or more of these folks in the near-term and try to work out extensions with the rest. The alternative is to wait until July and see where the team is in the standings. If things are going well, they could just stand pat and keep them all for the post-season. If things are not going well, they could do some trade deadline house-cleaning, just as Boston did with Lester last July.

LaRoche was not traded. The Nats declined their half of a mutual $15 million option. They need the money to throw at everybody else, and they feel that Ryan Zimmerman needs to move to 1B anyway. As a free-agent, LaRoche was able to sign a two-year $25 million contract with the White Sox.

Thanks Tony good post. Love the Nats and hope they do better next season. The playoffs were a let down this past season but like they used to say in Brookland there's always next year.

Werth sentenced to five days starting tomorrow. Does he have to serve the full five? Isn't there a rule that people only do half of the time? Will he need to get a shave and hair cut? When does the mug shot get released? When he hits the bricks does he get new whips?

Normally, any part of a day would count as a whole day, meaning you only have to serve the first minute of your last day before being released. So if he went in Friday night, he could stay Saturday, Sunday, and Monday, then be released at one minute past midnight on Tuesday morning. But he's going to do the weekend option and I'm not real sure what counts and doesn't count with that.
