ODU, CNP, VS. GMU

I never hear much about ODU or CNP, how do they compare to GMU? Are they more in the vein of Radford?

ODU is like GMU with football, both are in metropolitan areas, both are demographically diverse, both have working students, both have large amounts of matriculating/part time adult students, both offer internship opportunities, both have large study abroad programs

CNU has a homogenous population, predominantly white, girls look alike similar to JMU, beautiful campus but nothing in area, more comparable to MWU although MWU seems more diverse. Radford is predominantly white, in the same mountains as VT, outdoor recreation in lieu of metro area.

CNU is full of conservatards. The others? Not so much. GMU is immigrant heavy. Don't forget VCU.

Every one of these schools is very different and their campuses feel a lot different.

Each has different strengths. MW is more of a liberal arts school. CNU is small and also more of a liberal arts school. JMU is also best known for liberal arts - also known as being "Just Missed UVA" VCU is huge, better known for arts, comms, and med. GMU is known for math and computers. Radford is best known for business, ed, and nursing. Tech is great for engineering.

CNP is a complete joke as is GMU; both commuter schools. ODU has recently stepped up in class. ODU use to be a low grade college, mainly attended by all the Virginia Beach kids.

Now ODU has football and good basketball. They recently stepped up ODU sports from the CAA to C-USA. The CAA was mainly local schools. Now ODU plays nationally.

ODU also now has above average academics for Virginia. It's no William and Mary or UVA but falls in the middle of the spectrum for VA. ODU's undergrad enrollment is around 20,000. Not sure about grad schools.

The tough part about attending ODU is your 20 minutes from VA Beach and close to Nags Heads which can be tempting. Who doesn't like going to the beach. Lots of hot bikini babes around the area.

CNU is about as bad as Regent or Liberty. It shouldn't even count as a school. The others, as at least hinted at, are fine in their specialty areas, but pretty much worthless at everything else.

CNU gets more conservative kids, but also brighter kids than ODU. ODU was always called "OD" U for a reason and that's never going to change.

We toured the school and kid wasn't too interested but it was similar to GMU, except kids seemed happier to be there. Didn't seem to have good job placement, though, for kids who didn't want to become teachers.

VA Schools ranking:

Top Tier:

UVA, William and Mary: Grads go on to become top execs earning $120,000+. Most get a Masters degree or higher. Don't expect Presidents, CEO's or business owners. Grads playing it safe and by the book. Not risk takers.

Middle Tier:

Va Tech: Mixed bunch, most end up as technical people and middle level managers.

JMU: Short term school. Most leave after two years to go on to a larger school. Transfer school.

ODU: Party school. If a person graduates they either start their own company, work for a start up or completely drop out of society. Some become CEO's in large companies using "connections." Extremely independent.

GMU: Mixed bunch. Don't expect much more than middle level managers or government employees. Not really business focused grads. Content with life.

Bottom Tier:

VCU - Basketball got some good talent to this school but it struggles to get out of the bottom tier. Expect low level managers, call center workers, secretaries.

CNU, Liberty, Marymount, Mary Washington: Their parents have a lot of money and demand their kids get a degree so they send them to these school. Marymount is a bunch of snobs, no need for degrees as their parents hand them everything. Liberty, CNU, Mary Washington end up being restaurant employees unless they get a grad degree. Most are conservatives.

Radford and Longwood: Party schools. Grads end up being plumbers, mechanics, HVAC, park authority employees and arts & craft directors.

Then it doesn't really matter. If not, then go to NoVa and get into Uva or W&M or you'll end up with a shit life.

True you could do NOVA to save money and then attend UVA on a the VCCS Tranfer program-

Virginia’s community colleges offer students more than the opportunity to earn a degree or certificate. They provide a gateway to the commonwealth’s four-year colleges and universities.

Through system-wide agreements, students who graduate from one of Virginia's 23 community colleges with an associate's degree and a minimum grade point average may obtain GUARANTEED admission to more than 20 of the commonwealth's colleges and universities.

In addition, individual colleges have even more transfer agreement to choose from, so check with your college guidance office, or check them out on the Virginia Education Wizard.

The Guaranteed Admissions Agreements between Virginia's community colleges and four-year colleges and universities are available in .pdf format in the table below.

It should be noted that VCU is literally right across the street from several housing projects in the bad part of Richmond. Off-campus housing close to the school will be terrifying.

CNU is not bad at all...excellent facilities and sports program for a DIII school. The judgements of CNU in this thread are way off IMO. Lots of money pouring into that school...tons in fact. They've built a solid teaching faculty and provide great opportunities for their students in the form of valid internships. My neighbor's boy got a Computer Engineering degree studying Information Systems there this past summer and had his choice of three jobs. Took an $80K starting position at Booz Allen, where he interned his junior year.

The opportunity is there at CNU if you take advantage of it. They've done a good job building that program. Can't really speak on many other universities in VA...my kid is trying to get into UVA's engineering program but that's a tall order for even a very good student...his fallback's are VT and CNU based on what he's heard and researched.

Obviously does not know what he is talking about. It really depends on what you're trying to major in when it comes to these schools.

UVA- Business, Tech- Engineering, GMU- Economics

I'll tell you right now VCU is the top school for pharmacy. For other majors not too sure about.

Out of the ODU, CNU, and GMU, go for GMU!

ODU has the rep of being a party school, GMU does not. ODU also has weaker freshman admissions standards. ODU is comparable to radford academically.

ODU partying doesn't hold a candle to Radford or JMU partying. ODU doesn't gang rape their fellow co-eds. No one goes to GMU for marine related majors, they go to ODU. The Olympic sailing team trains is based at ODU. It is in a category of its own because of its geographic area.
