WAWA is coming, finally

Just on the border with Fairfax County.

The Loudoun County Board of Supervisors late Wednesday finally approved, narrowly, an application to build the jurisdiction's first Wawa, at the intersection of Old Ox and Oak Grove roads. It was a 27-month process to OK a 5,300-square-foot convenience store with 12 gas pumps.

Why did it take 27 months?

WAWA will really put Loudoun County on the map alright. How many of them are there in Woodbridge?

Yeah, because Democrats are just great on economic development issues.

No, there are 2 main reasons why it took 27 months. First, Herndon was pitching a shit-fit because they only want high density mixed-use development along Rte 606 in anticipation of the new metro stations in the area. The new Wawa would be just a few hundred feet from the Herndon border and doesn't fit their model at all. The second reason is just good old fashioned cronyism. The family that owns the gas station across the street (I think its an Exxon) was trying to sabotage the project because they don't want to have to compete with Wawa. They tried to get Loudoun to delay the project and do more traffic studies, etc. It worked for a while.

Glad to see it finally get approved. I've always liked the Wawa's I've stoppedat in other areas. Much better than Sheetz or 7-11.

People who buy food from gas stations are at the bottom of the economic ladder. Who cares if it's any good.

only in northern Virginia are there people who can get excited over the construction of a new but smelly and trash producing gas station. Wow, I think we just might be bottoming out...

To anyone who ever got further than a piggybank, the economics of Democrats are light years ahead of the goober corporatist bullshit that Republicans try to pass off. Crash-test dummies are better drivers than Republicans are stewards of the economy. The last economically successful Republican administration was that of Teddy Roosevelt. Who would have been kicked out of today's Republican party for being way, way, way too liberal and anti-business. Modern Republicans are a guaranteed train wreck for the economy. Take what Obama has given you -- sell stocks at a profit now.

Its a good thing you backed-up your statements with facts and supporting info, rather than just spouting a bunch of mindless partisan propaganda.

Question - what is the technical reason why doesn't WAWA or sheetz come near the district (FFX county, DC, Prince Georges etc.)? Is it just too much monopoly from 7-11 etc?

I work near a WAWA that opened a few years ago. It seems cool at first but after awhile it is just as disgusting as all other fast food places. I do drink their coffee but 7-11 or Mcdonalds coffee is just as good. Some of the subs they make come out wet with the bread all dissolving into a disgusting liquid. The gas they sell is just fine.

WAWA is far from disgusting, better food and drinks than any fast food in the area. The 5 dollar hoagies are the best deals ever and being a native NJ'er I can tell you if you know what sandwiches to buy it is wonderful.

Then the gas prices are always a few cents lower there. Great addition to Fairfax and a place I will frequent frequently.

It is all about the cost and availability of land. The typical Sheetz or Wawa uses at the minimum twice the land as a typical gas station. Does meet the cost model especially for Sheetz. I don't think either Sheetz or Wawa has ever purchased and remodeled an existing station.

Another reason not to go there, it attracts NJ and Philly people. They smell so bad they make you want to puke.

I frequented Wawa when I was a student, so I was indeed at the bottom of the economic ladder. It was Princeton after all.

Right, it's between the two secure buildings on Air & Space Parkway, just west of Centreville Road. Within spitting distance of the TEN MILLION DOLLAR OVERPASS that they built between the two buildings, so the poor security folks didn't have to leave and re-enter the secure perimeter when going to meetings. (Source: some Googling found the contract being awarded for $10M or so; no, I didn't keep the link and don't feel like hunting it down again, but I'm sure it's still out there somewhere.)

A bargain. Be thankful the CIA didn't build a tunnel with a little subway train going between the 2 buildings. Don't think that idea wasn't entertained for a while when the were designing DD1 and 2.

People are actually excited about the prospective opening of more downscale gas stations! And the same morons are pissed that there are people who can move from one building to another without having to go outside.

WaWa is not a gas station chain -- it's a mini market sort of like 7-11. Some (not most) of them have gas, just like some 7-11s. Except WaWa is bigger and better than 7-11, especially their made-to-order sammiches. Which are yummy!

Most people can afford to live closer in. They just choose not to make the sacrifices it may require of them to do so. Inside>Outside. No matter how you slice it.

For REALLY good sandwiches, head over to Chase the Submarine on Church Street in Vienna. You're just not going to be finding a Wagyu pastrami sub at WAWA or anywhere else. House-smoked wagyu brisket, whole grain mustard, creme fraiche, carrot sauerkraut, and pickled shallots on rye, and all for just $8.75. If you love to eat, it's good to live in Vienna!

Most people live out on the exurban fringes because of the well-known trade-off between home prices and commuting times. The Happy Place is of course to be found in the middle -- far enough out to escape the packed-in drear of dust and decay, close enough in to be able to access all the best that the area has to offer.

Are they finally open? Seems like I've been hearing about this place for months. I'll have to check it out soon. A sub place can hardly have a much better or more diverse heritage than Ma, Hernandez, and Amouri. I'd expect some seriously surprising new tastes.

I find it hard to believe that anyone would want to live inside the beltway. I work at Quantico and have a reverse commute. Maybe I would feel differently if I had to work in the shitty city.

Outside any county is irrelevant. The discussion was about inside or outside the beltway. Any attempt by you to take the conversation on a tangent is just like you - irrelevant.

Look, we get it. You're butthurt envious of those that have what you cannot attain.

The simple fact is that if you take the same house on the same size lot in a similar neighborhood and move it inside the beltway, it will be automatically worth much more. You can't deny that simple fact.

Not supported by the facts. The pipeline WAWA locations are in PW and Loudoun counties with one exception that is on the Fairfax-Loudoun border. That was the standard for "further in". It's you and the Beltway that are irrelevant here.
