VA to Florida (I-95) - any place to see along the way

Can you suggest some places to stop along the way from VA to Florida, not too far off the highway?

I've done this drive twice to Miami round trip.

South of the Border on the SC-NC border
Count the Number of South of the Border Signs
Truck Stops
Caffeine

Both times i did this drive, i left at 10pm and got to miami around noon-1pm the next day. This to me is the best time to drive.

I-95 to Florida from VA really sucks, there's about 2 1/2 hours each of VA and NC about 3 hours of SC 1 1/2 of GA and then you are in North Florida which is pretty much like GA until about a hundered miles or so in.SOmeone is going to say "South of the Border", don't listen...

IF you have the time (it's about an extra 2-3 hours) shoot east in NC and hit US 17. You can get it around VA Beach also, but it'll add more time.
Now it's a US Highway with a traffic light and a podunk town here and there, but it is absolutely beautiful at this time of year. WHile we're just getting a trace of Spring here, you'll feel like you're in the Wizard of Oz and everything is in color when you get toward the coast. Everything is in full bloom.

You can also hit WIlmington NC, Charleston or Myrtle Beach SC on US 17. The first two are nice little towns, the latter has some fun stuff for kids, like Ocean City with palmettos.

If you're really looking for some fun along the way, I've never found much off the 95 route, just set the cruise at 73 and jam for a day, then spend the next day in the pool recovering.

The 82nd Airborne Museum at Ft. Bragg (Fayetteville) is incredible.
Well worth the very short drive off I-95.

Yeah I second the driving during the night, leave like 10pm. Made it from Fairfax to West Palm Beach in 13 hours, just stopping for gas and to piss. Those 5 hour energy things filled me up pretty good for some reason. South of the Border is a shit hole, well at least it is in the off season. Did see a trucker walking with a girl to a motel there, so if you want to get some ass on the way down...

Petersburg and the Petersburg Battlefield just south of Richmond.

There's a great science museum in Richmond

Airborne and Special Operations Museum near Fayetteville, NC
(There are other sights there as well)

Santee, SC has a pretty good outlet mall if you're into shopping.

Mighty Eight Air Force Museum near Savannah, GA exit, I believe it's just north of it, but you can see it from the highway,

St. Augustine, Fl has a ton of sights and an easy trolley tour that you can jump on and off of to stop and see what interests you.

And you can get even more ideas here:

And of course use common sense at the rest stops. The panhandlers are not shy at all. We had one stick his head in the window while we stopped to get a few minutes rest on the humid summer night's drive down there. It scared the shit out of us when we woke up and there's some idiot with his head in our car begging for $2!

And don't give a dime to that tricky tramp who claims her boyfriend's car broke down and they need money to make it home.

I agree that you miss out on all the traffic by driving at night, but it's by no means an easy ride.

Drove by South of the Border on our way to Hilton Head last summer. The place looked abandoned (at the height of summer). Cafe Risque looked to be doing good business if that's your thing.

If your a guy, Fayetteville is about halfway so stop at the 82nd Airborne Museum before checking out the various topless joints. Deployed soldiers' baby mamas gotta pay the bills! Some decent campgrounds outside of town, too.

If your a chick, stop in Savannah to shop in the little boutiques.

Everything else along the way sucks or is too far off of 95 until you get to the Hard Rock Casino in Broward County.

South of the Border blows, but you can pick up some Blenheim ginger ale if you must stop there. Blenheim is incredible ginger ale.

Also, you can get really good barbecue (not like the crap around here), close to many exits in NC, SC, and GA. Check boards like www.chowhound.com.

Finally, in Jacksonville FL is an amazing sandwich shop called Blue Boy Sandwich Shop. One of their locations is just 1/4 mile from 95 at the Norwood/Lem Turner exit.

With a little effort you can eat really well on this drive. With no effort you can eat very badly.

Moving smartly from NoVA, it's 6 hrs to Florence and 12 hrs to JAX. That's hauling ass...

There is nothing to see anywhere along the way and you most likely have no time to waste, so keep moving.

My advice - crash near JAX airport north of town - many hotels, and then pick it back up for the finish.

Barreling down 95 in Fl in the dark after 12 hrs.+ driving is a very bad experience.

Trust me.

I just did that drive pretty much...

Cafe Risque is I-95 exit 70 in NC... good if you want to see topless chicks while you get some lunch... not much hands on though...lol

South of the Border for some more food and annoying local kids...

If your willing to go off course for a bit, Myrtle Beach, SC... freaky teaky bar... get a pitcher of Blue Motorcycle for $22 bucks... and watch the hotties in the cages ;) lol

Or save all your energy for Jax, FL... especially if your driving over the weekend... 5 colleges and all the partying you can handle and more ;)

I'd just make it a two day road trip... party on...

I'm looking into the same thing - I do recall as a child stopping for BBQ in Smithfield, Air Museum in Fayetteville, several small flee and antique places off the beaten path (search internet), if you have children it would be a miserable trip if you don't stop South of the Border. Savannah has War Museums, plantations and small quaint shops for food, I recall a visit to light house somewhere in GA, St. Augustine is also like Savannah. There's a state park near Palm Coast, FL with lots of history/sugar plantation and don't forget Cape Cannaveral/NASA.

There are TOO many places to even name.

South of the Border is a must at least a few times. They have some cool little shops and all (Including a "Hat Shop").

I've stopped at so many different locations along that route, that I can't really think of a specific point of interest beyond the aforementioned.

"It scared the shit out of us when we woke up and there's some idiot with his head in our car begging for $2!"

phhhhh. i was selling a newish car i could no longer afford due to gov workers stalking me at the workplace.*

i had a couple show up, car hardly ran (did NOT look like they could afford a new car or even pass state inspection). the Richmond va plates look beaten up / maybe stolen.

AND they tried to get me to let them test drive the car alone. asked me for the keys. they then acted as if I'd hurt them by suggesting that was not a good idea that i'd let them take the car off on pure trust.

that scared me shitless.

people coming from out of town to "check over the car" i'm selling

too bad i didn't have a phone service i coulda gotten a pic of them - if i weren't afraid what they might do if i had a photo of them

----------------------------------
people die from these people who want to wash your windows for $2

i know someone that happened to

----------------------------
* i'd take a loss by selling but could pay the loss. a greater risk would be to keep it, have it depreciate, then have something "go wrong" and have it repo'ed adn be on the hook for much more.

Greyhound wants upwards of $200 EACH WAY to go to Florida. a 24+ hour each way trip to sit with the homeless and druggies going that way to "start over" aka get better drugs in the sunshine instead of freezing up here. Then there are 50-11 stops along the way adding more people crowded on a bus with someone who didn't wash their ass in the past 2 weeks and you can smell it. Forget going to the bathroom on the bus the heroin users already took over and nodded out with the door locked so no one could get in for an hour. True story. I learned my lesson that day.

I can rent a small SUV for a week for that much (about $350 if i want to do the full insurance to be sure), drive down, handle my business for 3 days and go where i want when i want while in FL, come back to VA, and still have the car to ride around another day or 2 before i need to return it. They have unlimited mileage now, so back in the day it was expensive due to the mileage.

Best option is always flying, I go with google flights, orbitz, and the carriers direct (usually southwest or delta for me!) but that can be pricey too- if you get last minute notice to go to FL, it can be upwards of $1200 round trip (business class)- but then again you are there at the beach in 5 hours already having a drink or 2 on the plane for free.

Driving is better if you don't like planes, or just want to see the USA along the way, or are just broke. Flight>>>autotrain if you have your own car>>>Renting a car>>>greyhound or whatever bus service.
