Why do I always see cop cars parked in the parking lot of the Pan Am shopping center?

Today I saw a Suburban following what looked like an armored limo and crown vic out the of Pan Am shopping center. The suburban has it's lights going and four guys that looked like bodyguards.

Is there some police substation in the Pan Am shopping center? What are the coming from in Pan Am shopping center?

My guess is US Marshall or Secret Service, but it could be Diplomatic Security...plenty of protectees in the metro DC area with small motorcades and security details. There is at least one Supreme Court Justice in the area and you have to assume that leadership from almost every Cabinet agency lives somewhere nearby.

A former Deputy Attorney General lived in Fairfax Station (his kids went to Robinson) and his detail was always around.

The Pan Am Family Restaurant is popular with area police. Good food, good service, low prices.

Looks to me like ordinary residents plus an overactive imagination.

Another question is, "why are there always panhandlers at the corner of Nutley and 29 and beggars in the Pan Am parking lot?" I so wish that the security detail would be out chasing off these grifters.

Around 1pm They came out the middle exit of the Pan Am shopping center then turned right to go towards Merrifield.

Note the sign on the right says "Micro Center"

Looks like Secret Service or Federal Protective Service.

Doubt they are "always" at PanAm , probably had a detail they were covering that either went to the center or they were getting cued for a pick up somewhere up the road.

I have had 24 hour details in my neighborhood and there is currently a detail around almost daily as well at this point. I know exactly who they are covering, about as high up as you can get without having housing provided.

Usually groups of at least 3 cars/SUV's, if more than 3, the level of the details importance is getting up there.

Looks like some cabinet official lives near there b/c they're the only ones who get this level of protection. I lived near Eric Holder for years in Spring Valley and he always had those suburbans hanging at the shopping center off Mass Ave.

I saw them today leaving Safeway when I was driving up nutley street, I just assumed they needed gas. We both went in same direction and it was a totals of 3 cars with the Harry dude looking out the window trying to be all bad ass. They drove into the Muslim embassy off hilltop. I couldn't believe how slow they drove!! The SUV did have its red and blue lights on, but was in no hurry. I did notice a shit load of Muslims going to the embassy also.

Yes, it was a three car group. A blue Crown Vic leading, a black heavy recent looking limo as the middle car, and a following black tinted window Suburban with four guys, the two back seat guys with windows open constantly hanging out the windows scanning around. When I raised my hand in my car to take a picture, the backseat guy in the gray shirt(see pic in OP) quickly leaned out the window and stared at me. He had black gloves on like he was ready for heavy action.

I first noticed the 3 car convoy walking back to my car because the SUV had it's lights on briefly going through the parking lot. Unusual for me to see a limo convoy in supermarket parking lot.

It looked like the Suburban only had flashing lights on only when there was a chance the three car convoy could get split apart by a car breaking in. The lights bars on the Suburbans were RED and blue. I think FCPD uses only blue now?

From the way the convoy moved it looked liked these guys were VERY serious about who ever they were protecting and very professional. Strangely they obeyed all traffic signs and signals. Stopped completely for all stop signs in the parking lot, didn't turn on any flashing lights to go through an intersection.

I thought for sure they would block the intersection at Nutley and 29 or throw on their lights to allow the convoy to continue. Nope they followed the traffic signals like everybody else.

They seemed more like a VERY VERY high paid security detail?

I'm just intrigued by what this "oddity convoy" was and finding out more.

The wooded are between Nutley and Rt. 50 right there across from the Pan Am mall is a hotspot party area forcamping and all for all the substance abusing slags that milk The Lamb Center. Making sure all their straight up cash can be spent on the booze and drugs. One super snitch boy working for the FXPD there is William Patrick ABELL, a.k.a. "Bill". Another is Letroy Shelton. You can easily look up their police records right her e on FXUnderwear and plainly see their record show how they snitch their way out of jail working with FXPD.

Secret Service vehicles can have VA plates, not all have DC or MD plates.

Definitely secret service, federal protective service, DOD or CIA.

I would guess someone more national security related to have the full trail SUV with windows down.

Maybe it was Susan Rice. I think she lives out in Fairfax.

Gyro platter, BBQ sub, omelets, reubens. Pretty much everything is good there. It's a terrific little place. Way more than just cops make a habit of stopping in.

I do not live an empty life.

Let's see, I run into this type of thing EVERY day where I live. I actually get stuck behind these details often leaving my development and driving in the area.

I also have to be careful as the subject that these guys are protecting walks in my area and the security detail has 2 vehicles and walker behind the subject.

Often I have to be careful, when driving, how I approach these guys as to not appear threatening even, while they are covering the walker.

Not too interested in seeing how well their training kicks in and what kind of weapons they are carrying.

Just because it has a Virginia license plate does not mean that it can't be Secret Service...they have plenty of vehicles with Va. Md, as well as DC plates...I work on them all the time and I have seen vehicles with all three plates...

It's true. Police don't prevent or stop crime for the most part, so that's why most responsible citizens are armed. When seconds count police are minutes (hours) away.


To the OP: I have been to that center many times and haven't seen security details ever. Maybe the occasional cop car...

Suburban with windows down, etc. is counter assault team.

Ironic that years ago Colonel Yosef Alon from Israel was murdered in Chevy Chase. He didn't have a suburban following him wherever he went.

I saw this same thing on 29 heading to Pan Am from Circle. I thought it was the President’s motorcade. There were a couple of SUVs with back windows open and - what I thought were - secret service hanging out; and one car which they looked to be protecting. This was a couple years ago. It was right there at Pan Am

I was at microcenter Friday buying this kickass tablet and I saw 6 black GMC suburbans with the compact lights on the top pull into the parking lot and drive behind microcenter. WTF?

I saw this at Pan Am before. It was probably 6+ years ago. There was maybe three of these SUVs plus the vehicle with the subject they were protecting. One or two of the SUVs had people in the backseats hanging out the windows on-guard like in OPs picture. They came along side us on 29 E as we approached Nutley. I think they turned right on Nutley, but I don’t remember. I assumed it was the President.
