Braddock Road 2025
Posted by: VDOT Study ()
Date: November 11, 2014 12:09AM

Presented at the regional VDOT meeting:

A comprehensive plan for the rebuilding of a heavily used stretch of Braddock Road.

Includes Braddock Road and feeder streets from Burke Station Road to Heming Ave.

Includes building a multimodal transit center on the former Northern Virginia Training Center property at Burke Station Road, and a smaller transit center behind Kings Park Shopping Center.

All intersections will be designed for right-turn only or grade separated.

No traffic lights between Burke Station Road and I-495.

Options for bus rapid transit, EZ-Pass/HOT lanes, bicycle and pedestrian routes.

Widens Braddock Road from four general purpose lanes to six general purpose lanes from Guinea Road to Burke Lake Road.

Widens Braddock Road from six general purpose lanes to eight lanes from Burke Lake Road to the 495 Express Lanes.

Includes noise abatement along entire length.

Removal of some homes will be necessary to accommodate intersections.

This part of Braddock Road currently handles approximately 70,000 automobile trips a day, and is one of the more congested corridors in the county.

A growth rate of 18% is projected over the next 30 years along the Braddock Road corridor.

Toll roads in this area are historic. Little River Tpk is one of the oldest toll roads (former) in the country. Hot lane crap is out of control though. Its the result of our government ignoring infrastructure. Soon we will have HOT Lane water and sewer. We will be paying Transurban per flush. You want some infrastructure for your tax dollar do NOT vote Republican as they are all for privatizing pretty much every aspect of Govt. a la HOT Lanes.

Not sure the Corporate owned Dems are much better but they certainly arent worse. Anyway enjoy paying $15 to go from Burke to the Beltway. If you are on your way to Tysons could be $30 each way...

Clearly we have reached the point where it is necessary to dispense with the current party choices and form a new one committed to good government the promotion of the fundamental interests of the citizenry. Party plank number one will require fealty to preservation of public assets for the benefit of the citizens. Office holders who propose the expansion of toll roads or allow for-profit exploitation of public right-of-ways will be publicly shamed and banished from Fairfax County in perpetuity.

A more realistic vision of Bradfock Rd in 2025 is a 20-hr-a-day parking lot clusterfuck. All gas taxes go to pay for freebies for illegals and Obama's kids, along with the generous pensions for VDOT union employees who'd put in ten years of time accepting paychecks for no work. No money for roads.

This is what happens when Repugs won't vote for higher gas taxes to maintain infrastructure. We end up paying tolls to an Australian corporation instead. Happy now, wing nuts?

WTF are you talking about. That company owns the hot lanes on 495, not anything on Braddock Road.

Get your shit straight before posting.

Left over from the Braddock expressway of the 1970s master plans. Was to run along Braddock, then up Guinea, roughly parallel Pickett, and arrive at I66 near the Vienna Metro.

Taking that road off the map did nothing to address the future demand. And here we are.

Why do they assume that traffic will continue to grow? Traffic grew over the last 35 years as Fairfax County became built out and the population grew; but now the area west of the Beltway along Braddock is essentially built out - I find it highly dubious to think traffic will continue to increase at the rate it has in the past.

Except for a couple traffic lights where the timing never seems to be set correctly, Braddock moves fairly smoothly - as a resident of the area I don't mind the relatively short time it takes to get from Guinea to the Beltway as compared with the alternative of having what would essentially be I-66 (if they built grade separated interchanges) through our community. At most they need to add one extra line on each side, spend some time studying and improving the time of day light timing and sequences in a few key areas, and perhaps build some pedestrian friendly waiting zones in the medians so pedestrians did not have to cross the entire road at once. That's a lot cheaper that what the VDOT folks want to do.

Besides, if they ever got around to improving I-66, a lot of the traffic headed far west could just use 66.

It was to be the Monticello Freeway.

Traffic growth (like school population) has been grossly underestimated for years. As all those nice little single family homes with 2 cars are converted to extended family homes with six (or more) cars, traffic will increase. GMU will continue to expand. Plans are being made for a professional sports stadium west of 123.

25 minutes to go two miles this morning. A little shorter for all those who cut through the neighborhoods.

Braddock Road does not go "through" any communities. It is the dividing line between them.

With flower pots. Flowers solve traffic congestion.

You're probably right about the first part, but completely totally fucking wrong about the second part.

The Commonwealth of Virginia pays peanuts with terrible bennies, and it's getting worse all the time. Virginia pensions are laughable, no more than half the peanuts you made working. And there is absolutely NO "VDOT union".

The only VDOT employees that may do okay is the brass. Lots of graft and corruption up high. The grunts certainly do not get a piece of the action.

Don't introduce logic. It's much fun blaming the Mexicans and Obama for everything.

I bought my house off of Rolling Road in the late 1960's for $22,500 that was a ton of cash back then. I sold it in 2004 for $690,000 and I so glad I got the hell out. It was bad in 2004,and I can only imagine what Braddock Road is like at 7:30 am.

The roads need to stay as they are, maybe even cut back some. The solution now is getting people to give up their cars. There is nothing new about this process, it has happened in hundreds of cities. It will happen slowly but we can speed things along with tax penalties for owning too many vehicles and higher gas taxes.
We need more zipcar availability and we need more buses and bike trails and yes we need to keep funding metrorail.

Why default to prompting change by punishment instead of incentive? Democrats don't understand that you need to use human nature of greedy accumulation to the benefit of society, not work against it. How about state income tax credits for every mile under your county's average miles driven per vehicle? The county average resets every two years and mileage gets recorded as a part of state safety inspections. You'd get people racking up points, fewer people driving, less road maintenance costs for the state. The average miles driven would drop, which is what everyone wants.

See haw carrots work better than sticks?

Then these "so called" gifted students should figure out alternative routes to the facility. The ironic joke about Braddock Rd. is it's named for a stupid English General who had his ass handed to him in PA. Redcoats marching down a road.
