Im looking to get a cord of well seasoned hard wood fire wood. Yelp has reviews for tree care but not really firewood per se. Anyone have good/bad experiences with a firewood provider?

Hey smartass you forgot: access to trees, time to season the wood, a splitter and of course a pick-up truck. By the time I rented the tools and vehicle it would cost more for me to find, cut and transport the wood than it would to have it delivered. All that is assuming I have the time to do all this and the time to wait for the wood to dry out - I do not have time for either...

Dead wood is everywhere, Prius seats fold down don't they? You have time to post here, you have time to gather firewood.

Parsons farm. The owner is a wack job but he has good wood. They are south of manasshole on 234. They don't deliver but you can pick up your own and they charge by the cubic foot. You can stack it yourself in the back of a pickup and they measure the stack and do the math. I like to pick it up myself so I can select each piece and stack it tight. This way you only buy what you need.

I got wood delivered from Tim Corbin a couple years back and was very happy with it. He will deliver it dumped or stacked. He was a little bit expensive but the wood was high quality.

Id like to know a good source of firewood too. Merrifield charges 425 bucks for kiln dried plus another 125 bucks to stack and deliver. 550 bucks seems like a serious rip off for a cord of wood. Also what happens when you store kiln dried wood outdoors? even if covered it must pick up some moisture from water vapor. Wouldnt that pretty much hydrate it back into the non-kiln dried category???

I have dealt with them in the past and the price was ok. I was in a jam, usually the local tree people will drop off trees in the early spring and I split and stack to season, I try to primarily heat with wood over the winter, Gas bill runs about 40 a month but we cook and Hot water with Gas. Going that route get trees delivered and Rent a Log splitter from Home Depot and for the price of a cord you can get 5 or more, plus save the environment a little, its 10 times cleaner than gas, prevents the dumping at the landfill and even though a little labor it gives you a nice feeling that your hard earned money isn't just going up in smoke.

I do about 5 cords a year in 2 wood stoves.

Plus you can put the ash to work on the yard and Garden.

agree. good mulch for sale too. the owner is a tad strange to say the least. last time I was down there he had some bizarre story about how he was totally convinced that he saw Nien Nunb lurking in the woods behind his house. I would've laughed in his face had he not been so seriously convinced of what he saw.

DO you want the provider seasoned or the wood?

Thank you for the info. Unfortunately the source you provided states 'our firewood is not properly seasoned at this time' - thats a good sign that they are not willing to sell green wood. So my search for a source continues all help appreciated and to the trolls, well, you are idiots as usual...

Not specific advice but I've had good luck with craigslist. I got two solid cords of black locust for 300 bucks dumped in my yard. Stuff burns great and and thank god I didn't have to cut it myself - locust plays havoc on chain saw blades, or so I hear.

Advice from my chimney sweep: if you avoid burning pine (which produces tons of soot) and you don't have an old-fashioned brick fireplace (meaning brick on the inside where the smoke goes up), one a year is more than fine. Heck, most modern fireplaces have a nice metal pipe for a flue - you can go years burning oak and such with that and be just fine. Still, better safe than sorry.

it's not that hard to get up there a few times a year with the garden hose and spray it down real good. helps loosen up any soot deposits and prevent any flue buildup, just give it a good cleaning for a few minutes. 2 or 3 times per year is worth the peace of mind and a hell of a lot cheaper than a chimney service.

I believe that is the stupidest idea Ive seen here in a long time...

Water is a troll thread, Dont use water. I brush mine every other month or so. I only burn Hardwood, Seasoned a good 10 months but still get allot of Buildup, Duraliner in the flue from a previous Chimney Fire, but I also Bank the stove down each night so it doesnt stay hot enough over night to prevent build up. When you burn hot you are essentially doing a controlled Chimney Fire, Old Brick and Morter holds up well to that, not so sure about the Aluminum Liner..

I throw down a few tarps and use an old plastic kiddy pool to catch the water, it's not that hard or messy. I'd rather do the hard work myself than fork over money to these so-called "pro's". Had one of them scuff up my roof and rip some shingles off a few years back.

Guy I used was polite and quick, brought in an over-sized shop vac and cleaned up after himself. Trying to remember how much I paid him but it couldn't have been more than 100.

He also inspected for damage and told me that my flue cap was a bit rusty, but that it could be touched up in a minute or two with a bit of sandpaper and some rudtoleum. And that I could easily do it myself, which I did, later. Good guy. I mean some things I take pride in doing myself (sometimes with a little how-to advice from youtube) but others I leave to a pro.
