There are not enough native-born workers to fill in behind the baby-boomers as they retire. As the population in general ages, there will be ever increasing demand for home and health service workers -- fields that immigrants from various backgrounds have dominated. They will be coming. We can make it hard, or we can make it easy.

But, we will continue to do poorly if we do not absorb them in an orderly manner (give work papers and give citizenship to those who have been here for a length of time). If we do not do those things, we will see huge immigrant "ghettos" and gang problems continue to grow. We will see the minimum wage stagnate and our younger people get screwed (as they already are in higher costs for everything). They all know they have to go to college to get a job that gives them enough to eat (whether they are cut out for those kinds of work or not). Meanwhile immigrants I know say that it is not worth coming anymore (at least the smart ones say that). So guess what kind are coming?

Yes, the economy will grow from their labor. But who is benefiting from that growth? Certainly not the average worker. The average worker is seeing a decline in wages. Meanwhile the rich are getting richer. The situation is much more complicated than any one article can depict it. In a democracy, people vote and you all just saw which way they are voting and what they want. They don't care about economic growth if that means their own personal wages are declining. It means nothing to them.

This is the key sentence. The cost is not modest if you are 18 and have to pay exorbitant prices to attend college and your minimum wage job is $7.25 an hour. And even the community college prices have increased (the books and parking fee are ridiculous). I can understand why he might be inflammatory in a college classroom, but, yes, it makes for a good discussion. Maybe we can solve some of the issues of our time.

Does the "modest cost" include their health care and retirement? At the very least, the people who are benefiting from them being here should be paying for that (but, heck no, it won't be them---they get bailed out while we lose our homes). That's the "bright future"?

Correct. The ball is in our court to make the inevitable happen as smoothly as possible. Our current border and immigration policies are the product of anti-terror and anti-drug rationales that are poorly thought out and doomed to the sorts of failure that we have continuously seen from them.

Meanwhile, no thought at all has been given the vastly larger numbers of economic migrants. We desperately need them and they are seriously willing to come. We may have to throw a bunch of nativists and racists overboard in the process, but we need to be doing things to make it easier for migrants to come here and work legally than it is for them to come here and work illegally. Until we learn this simple lesson, things will simply not go well.

Education is actually a series of hurdles -- high school, college, grad school, doctoral programs, post-doc positions. At each level, those who come up short pack it in and go off into your "real world" of business, while the winners move on to the next higher level. Keep in mind as well that many who teach can also do, while few who do can also teach.

The Obama administration yesterday announced that it is spending $9 million to provide lawyers for some of the young illegal immigrants who flooded across the border earlier this year, but voters strongly believe these illegal immigrants do not have the same legal rights U.S. citizens do.

The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that 68% of Likely U.S. Voters say the new illegal immigrants should not have the same legal rights and protections that U.S. citizens have. Just 19% disagree. Thirteen percent (13%) are not sure. (To see question wording, click here.)

Seventy-one percent (71%) say these illegal newcomers should not be eligible for government services and benefits. Sixteen percent (16%) believe they are entitled to government aid. Again, 13% are undecided.

True, but the cutting of the SST program hurt that area particularly hard. Cutting high paying jobs in an area that relied on them really depressed the real estate values along the space coast. I was happy to see the old USA building off A1A finally got a tenant. The port will be adding in some nice jobs and real estate is starting to stabilize there. Some areas along the space coast are even getting back to pre recession price levels. You'd have to know where to look though.
