Federal Workers and Contractors Get Ready For Cuts- Hello Ted Cruz
Posted by: Gov Contractor Cuts Coming ()
Date: November 06, 2014 01:03PM

The Republican victory in the Senate changes the political landscape more for the federal workforce than most Americans. The terrain for federal employees could prove rocky, not that it had been so smooth before.

(Paul J. Richards/AFP/Getty Images)
The party’s impressive set of victories Tuesday now will give it full control of Capitol Hill. Congress rules over the working and living conditions of Uncle Sam’s staff to a far deeper degree than any other sector.

A look at what the Republican-dominated House has already approved provides a good indication of what will soon get much greater consideration in a Republican-dominated Senate. For starters, take the budget plan the House approved in April.

It would save Sam $125 billion over 10 years — at the expense of his employees.

The GOP has repeatedly given feds good reason to be wary of a Republican-controlled Congress. Last year’s 16-day partial government shutdown was engineered largely by recalcitrant House Republicans. At the same time, it’s worth remembering that the three-year freeze on federal pay rates was proposed by President Obama, a Democrat, and approved with a bipartisan congressional majority. Those two things, the pay freeze and the shutdown, angered the workforce and hurt its morale more than any other issues in recent years.

With a GOP-controlled Senate, federal employees should expect a Congress much more willing to pick their pocketbooks by requiring them to contribute more toward their retirement. The House Republican spending plan, authored by House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan (R-Wis.), would make workers pay 5.5 percentage points more of their salary toward retirement.

With no increase in benefits, that would amount to a 5.5 percent pay cut.

That means lower bar tips and less jobs for everybody in FFX county. Less cash is not good for Fairfax.

Get ready to see the big homes go back on the market soon.

You're kidding me right? 75% of Fairfax county businesses are directly related to defense contractors. Oracle, BAE, Northrop Grumman, Seaman, etc... Tysons is loaded with gov contractors.

Hell the FED has a shit load of buildings in Fairfax county alone.

The sun has set on Ted Cruz. And on Grover Norquist and the TEA Party. Their hours to strut and fret their way upon the stage have passed. With eyes on 2016, the GOP now needs to silence them and their ilk. They basically need to become blue-dog Democrats if they hope to have a prayer of survival.

^This. They're still fighting a battle that ended two years ago with the same old talking points and memes. That's a big part of why they lost so badly.

Here's a hint libtards... The "Tea party is racist," "Obstructionist Republicans," "Koch Brothers," "War on Women," and all of the rest of that crap was for hyper-partisan libtard consumption only. It was intended to manipulate you to get out and vote. When you start up with that same old shit, everyone else just thinks that you're a idiot.

Your list omits Consulting and Accounting firms that do a lot of business with the Federal Government including Deloitte, Grant Thornton, PwC, E&Y, and KMPG. All have offices in Fairfax County or Northern Virginia and many of their employees reside in FFX County. If the Republicans keep true to their word and cut federal spending as much as they say they will, there will be a lot of layoffs at all these firms and the trickle down theory will play out for the next couple of years.

I would think defense contractors might be safe with republicans in control but republicans had no problems slashing defense budgets over the last four years.

I'd say the NOVA area is going to be hurting soon. Not just Federal jobs but the trickle down effect of less cash to spend hurting everyone in Fairfax county.

Well at least there will be some cheap houses for sale.

Less pay for people in the area and fewer jobs but who cares? Right?

Waiting until some gov contractors take your job from you or you can't pay your bills. You'll care then.

Grass has been growing in the medians for years in NoVa, and now there are places where it is growing in the streets. Our HOA long ago took over cutting the grass in the medians near our neighborhood.

No, actually Republicans didn't. What few "cuts" (which weren't really cuts) happened via the sequester were a result of Republicans and Democrats NOT being able to arrive at any real cuts. And Republicans have been trying to restore the budget since.

This site must be predominately younger kids who have fallen for the dumb Tea Party talking point BS. Anyone whose been around DC since about the 50s knows that virtually nothing is ever actually cut. More or less money may move from one group of programs to another, but nothing really gets cut.

Don't count on it. Republicans need to cut programs now and they'll going to do it. Just a fact of life. Deal with it and make adjustments. Defense contractors will hit as well as all other gov programs.

You can't balance the budget without cuts.

BTW, I have been around DC for MANY years and worked with many different defense contracts. Yes, their will be layoffs of government contractors cut. You can count on that.

The only thing that saved this area in the past technology and the DOT.com boom. NOVA won't have the edge like it did in the past years. A lot of businesses have moved their major operations.

You're high. All you have to do is to look at the growth in contractor revenues and the growth of this area overall over the last 50 years. The major "dot com" companies are all here only because of their government services divisions.

They didn't really cut anything much even with the most "significant" cuts ever in the form of the sequester. That's not happening again. As much as I might like to see it after being government employee, a blood sucking contractor, and selling tech services directly to the government myself for many years and knowing how much of it is just completely wasted activity and money.

Tell me what Democrats are for and I might give a shit about the political process. All I hear is a war against women...., blather, gun control (which is BS until the 2nd Amendment is repealed - which is fine with me). They are pro-unions, who have outlived their purpose for the last 50 years.

Democrats basically have no agenda since they hated Bush. That is why they lost. They have run against Bush since 2006 but it is 2014. They keep putting the same tired pieces of shit in front of me as leaders.

I didn't vote this past election. You know what would've made me vote? If Mark Warner had announced he was going to challenge dipshit Reid for Leader. He seems to be too much of a wuss to stand against his own leadership in order to get things done. He is the epitome of a go along get along partisan. He has no spine whatsoever.

Republicans control the House. Everyone with a brain knows that, and knows this election would not change it.

Yet all those fed workers and contractors in Northern Va elect Democrat representatives (Connolly et al) who have NO SAY on the committees who create and approve spending.

Let the layoffs begin. Remind them that if they had elected Republicans they would have a stronger voice in Congress.

Mark Warner is just a drone.

The party tells him to vote yes and he votes yes, the party tells him to vote no and he votes no.

He never makes any waves and has no mind of his own. From a political party's perspective (D or R) he's the perfect politician.

God, but you're fucking ignorant. Do you ONLY listen to FOX News?

Actually, it was Bush's actions and policies, moron, because they were all but universally awful.

How did tax cuts for the rich work out?
HINT: Disaster.

How did NCLB work out?
HINT: Disaster.

How did WMD's in Iraq work out?
HINT: Disaster.

How did "heckuva job Brownie" work out?
HINT: Disaster

How did "the fundamentals of our economy are strong" work out?

You need to get a fucking clue, asshole. Bush was the anti-Midas President -- everything he touched turned to shit. His lone bit of success came in the wAfrican AIDS initiative. That's it. Everything else was just a colossal fuck-up, another thread in an eight-year tapestry of miserable disgrace and failure.

And by the way...Democrats as a party support fact and reason over myth and superstition, preservation of the middle class against a 30-year onslaught by the wealthy, equal rights for gays (and everybody else), the right and ability of all those who are eligible to register and then actually vote, a woman's individual right to decide if and when she will reproduce, comprehensive immigration reform to ensure the safe back-and-forth migration of workers and end the senseless suffering caused by the nonsensical drug- and terror-based current systems, comprehensive tax reform to redistribute the burden of total taxation more equitably, regulatory and market-based approaches to reducing carbon emissions, making health care insurance inclusive of and affordable to as many Americans as possible, maintaining instead of gutting workplace and environmental safety laws, preserving and reinforcing our existing Medicare and Social Security systems as public programs rather than converting them to private food pantries for the same bunch of Wall Street greedsters who engineered the Great Recession, shoring up the creaking systems that help support small businesses, veterans and military families, the elderly and disabled, and those tipped into financial crisis as the result of layoffs, divorces, and health care issues. Republicans as a party are and have long been opposed to all of these things. Every single one of them.

No worries here, was a defense contractor for the Navy in DC for 10 years before I was laid off in 2010. Originally worked in the Seawolf Class (PMS350), then in DSS/SEIE (PMS394) and last was in the Virginia Class (PMS450). I miss the Navy but I sure hell don't miss the commute, my current job may be less pay but it's 15 minutes from my house. I rarely had a life, got up at 3:30am to catch the 5:00am VRE train. Got to L'Enfant Plaza at 6:00, took Metro to the Navy Yard stop and at work by 6:30. To come home, I left work at 2:30. Hopped the Metrobus to Union Station to catch the first afternoon VRE train, got home at 5 (barring no signal problems, wet leaves on the tracks or someone getting hit). Then in bed at 7:30pm to get back up again at 3:30am, it's either this or sit in bumper to bumper traffic on the road. Getting laid off was a blessing, living a stress free life now and enjoying it.

Summary of all the Democrat comments on this thread: We still blame Bush and fear Republicans.

Meanwhile, the last four years of Democrat budgets never even made it out of committee in the Senate. White House tours are still shut down.

Fortunately, at least all the Global Warming/Climate Change studies are complete so no more billions need to be wasted there.

Yeah, that would be great. Abandoned houses and stores everywhere. It would be just like Detroit. Fucking idiot.

I operated Cat D-11 dozers for years before I retired,

I will happily come out of retirement to help scrape Fairfax County clean of the blight that exists today and return her to the beautiful place she was.

Yep. I voted against Warner after voting for him twice in the past only because of his support of Harry Reid. I'd have voted for him a third time if he'd have said he wouldn't vote for Reid as leader ever again. The democrats have no idea how much their leaders in congress turn off moderates. Now we'll see if Warner gets it or just rides another 6 years of partisan political nothingness.

Rose colored glasses much, gramps? While you are sitting around bitching about modern day Fairfax, stop sucking on the social security teat you old in-the-way fuck. Why don't you drive that dozer into a lake so others don't have to carry your "fuck you, I got mine" oxygen wasting ass on our backs. The only thing more annoying than lazy ass government workers is worthless subsidized old farts who do everything they can to fuck over the generations after.

Best part about all this is that old farts will get theirs and the younger farts will get about ½ of what they put it. Have fun living on $5000 a year when you're 80, which will be the retirement age in about 20 years. Stupid fucks like you deserve the ass-raping you're going to get.

Not quite old enough for FULL Social Security benefits. Got a couple years 'til I'm 66. As somebody mentioned, it'll probably be age 80 by the time it's your turn. But don't fret, most of you will have ODed well before then.

I'll wait because I want you punks to send me the maximum monthly benefit.

I really don't get the great relish others have for watching someone else get financially devastated. I don't work for the gov. or a business that relies heavily on government contracts, but there for the grace of God go I...

Just a fact that the gov will cut contractors before federal employees. It's very hard to RIF and the old-timers get senority and bump anyone with less. So the 50-somethings will take the jobs of the 40s, who will bump the 30's who will be out of a job. Instead, just stop renewing contracts. Much easier. Contractors in my agency WAH more than the feds and come and go as they please. Firm/fixed contracts have allowed the contractors to pad timelines and deliver just in time services that they've been sitting on for months while they fart off. It takes an active COR to stay on top of their lazy butts.

Well, there's your answer. You haven't worked with Government people. If you had, you'd understand. It wasn't always this way, but most have no talent and no ambition (military excluded). They don't really need to. The real work is done by contractors - who, unlike Government people, have zero job security.

A lot of Government workers 'telecommute' from home - where they do nothing. How would you feel working for people who make 100k+ (your taxes, BTW) and who don't do crap, except yell at 'lazy' contractors who are working their asses off? And then they have the gall to complain that they're underpaid. These people could never handle a job in the private sector. Of course, they'll never have to, since they can't be fired. It breeds a lot of resentment. How could it not?

Needless to say folks are working the weekend on this since the clock started Friday fucking night. Shit like this happens all the time; proposals dropping right before a holiday, due dates right after a holiday, loss notices late on a Friday. I wish I had a nickel for everytime a Govie got on their high horse and made impossible demands but far be it for them to lift a finger or work one minute after quitting time. "military excluded"???? You got to be kidding.

Most newer "government people" are former military. With veteran preference reigning supreme, it's almost impossible to get a FedGov job if you're not a vet.

My brother is a government electrician and he has former military guys working under him. He says most of them haven't even been to a Saturday morning electrical class at Home Depot. My brother has to teach them the basics so buildings don't burn down. They get the jobs because of veterans' preference and qualifications be damned.

The new reality in Fairfax. Existing/comps have been declining since last fall with corresponding increases in time on market.

The western 1/2 of Fairfax County is slowly but surely collapsing whilst the illiterati keep whistling past the proverbial graveyard.

Cuts to contractors, and to many civilians in this area, have been going on for several years so a change in Congressional party leadership is not the cause. The bread and butter for the big defense contractors may be the big warfighter platforms, but around here a large portion of contractors are providing services at the headquarters level - the business side of the DoD (human resources, financial management, acquisition, etc). The next round of sequestration hits in FY 16. The military departments and OSD agencies have mandated cuts in those areas in order to divert money to the warfighter side. I've seen entire organizations within the DoD cut all their contract support, offering early buyouts to civilians.

The sky is not falling just because the Republicans are in control. Contractors have been feeling the squeeze for some time now and it's going to get worse. But it was going to happen either way.

"MRIS' monthly RealEstate Business Intelligence Report says the median price of a closed sale in October was $400,000, up 2.6 percent from September, and the highest October price since 2005. It was also the highest year-over-year percent increase in eight months, up 5.3% from a year ago."

The housing market recovery in Fairfax County has been a micro-recovery anyway, with areas inside the Beltway (parts of Falls Church and Alexandria) enjoying continued growth and other localized markets, such as the new townhomes around the Vienna Metro helping drive up prices there (walking distance). Most of the county saw a brief but noticable uptick two years ago when houses started moving quickly, but only lasted for about 6 months.

Most of the homes in the county couldn't sell today for more than 80-90% of their market highs of 2006, if you're lucky.

You dumb goober, that was in response to the declining comps post. Comps, and prices have gone up. Read it. Again, these are things none of you worthless goobers will ever have to worry about.

Now on a more relevant note, PWC has been doing well, so you goobers can expect a rent increase on your apartments next year.

It's the pecking order of the liberal. At the top is billionaire industrialists who divide us in order to line their own pockets. In the middle are the angry apparatchiks who rally the knuckle-dragging mouth-breathers at the bottom like our poster repub-tardz LOL.

The angry try hope to move into the top rung but most are too socially unexpectable to ever be anything other than angry assholes who scream at anyone who disagrees with them.

Sadly (but luckily for the country), the bottom-feeders like repub-tardz are too simple-minded to even realize their lot in life and continue to be used until they are no longer needed. At that time, they are usally lined up and shot by their beloved leaders they've supported. In America, they become homeless bums begging for change at Metro stations.

Thus, you see the adoring love he has for asshole sighting. He worships anger, an emotion his estrogen-laden homoness can't evoke. Feel sorry for them, they are the postitutes of the democrat party.

Not really, cutting funding of gov programs means the loss of money of for Northern Virginia. Not the redistribution.

You are confusing "government cuts" with "government privatization."
