It was mediocre at best when I left in 80. Now it's a training camp for MS-13 and the name has changed to Juan Maria Lopez High School.

It's in a low income, high gang activity area.

JEB Stuart has some Cool-More pendejoes, but also a pretty good brain trust from the great neighborhood around Barcroft. I'm not sure if it ranks that low on scholastics etc. I'd blind bet on Stuart over anything PG,SE,SW or NE has to offer.

JEB is ok, but if you are looking for good heroin and drugs try Oakton or Westfields.

Stuart at one point was the most diverse HS in the country. Check the National Geographic article. Diverse in the nature of different nationalities and cultures, but also in economic diversity. Children of wealthy residents of Sleepy Hollow, Senators, Congressman, to the children of the lower income families from Baileys Crossroads. The school offers a great IB program, as well as ESOL classes for those that needed.

I enjoyed my time at Stuart and did not have a problem during my 4 years.

Stuart high school has a famous alumni: Julianne Moore. She is an actress
in one of my all-time favourite movie "Boogie Nights"

Julianne Moore is not an alumna of Stuart, much less an alumni.

She went there two years but graduated from HS in Wiesbaden, Germany after her military family moved.

The term alumnus or alumni is reserved for those who graduate from an institution. Julianne Moore (Julie Smith) did not graduate from Stuart; hence, she is not an alumna.

Tom Shadyac - the director of Ace Ventura, Bruce Almighty and other low-brow Jim Carrey fare that I have heard about (but, of course, never personally watched) is a Stuart alumnus. As is Bruce Cohen, the producer of Milk and other high-brow Sean Penn and Kevin Spacey fare that I have heard about (but, of course, never personally watched).

My understanding is that Stuart was like a private prep school in the 1960s (beating prep students from around in the world in the Henley crew regatta) and like a snotty suburban public high school in the 1970s (particularly singling out for ridicule those who attended Falls Church).

Stuart was actually a pretty good place to go to school in the 70s - does anyone remember:

Miss Mask?

Mr. Singer?

Ms. Breakiron?

Mr. Roylance?

Sorority girls from Tri-Hi-Y?

Wrong.

"Alumnus" and "alumna" include both graduates and former students of an educational institution.

Mr. Singer retired at the end of last year, and Mr. Roylance is still there.

is this Mr. Singer the math teacher?

I took his math class(algebra 2 or something) during my freshman year.
This was in the 1980s. Never like the guy... but I did get an A in
his class.

It wasnt too bad, I went to glasgow so I was use to the people. Good peeps, shitty football team I dont think we won a single game the year I was there.

Mr. Lilly taught chemistry as well. (assuming we're talking about the
same Mr. Lilly, white guy, slightly graying hair, a little overweight :) )

Nice guy... I forgot what year it was, but Mr. Lilly was the first teacher
at Stuart who bought a new Hyundai.(it came out in the 1980s...) We always
used to laugh... until another female teacher bought a Hyundai a couple months
later.

Julianne Moore (ne Julie Smith) did go to Stuart for two years (75-77); she had a younger sister who attended the school for one year (76-77). Her military family lived near Belvedere Elementary.

And, yes, Mr. Lilly was a Chemistry teacher. He was a nice guy who looked like Meathead on "All in the Family" (not that I ever watched that show). Or maybe it was one of the dogs in Three Dog Night.

JEB fielded some very good football teams in the 60's. I played for Annandale back then....and the big games were JEB and Woodson.

There weren't enough high schools in FFX back then to play a full schedule, so we played GW and Hammond in Alex and the Arlington schools.

I live around Jeb and jog back around the high school daily. It's nothing less than a little shady. It's littered with those punk-azz type kids... the same kids you hear on xbox live calling each other jews and ni**erz when they get shot or die. Plus read the writing on the road behind the school and that should just explain what I'm talking about.

hey I might be moving to Falls Church in about a month and the school I will attend is JEB. I'm a really "stick to the rules" person sort of. My group of friends are all really good kids. Like we care about school and the sports we play and we like other people that do as well. So...I've heard mixed things about this school like not many of the kids really care why they are there or whatever. Also, are the guys there nice? Because one thing that really makes me mad are guys that are complete asses to girls. Anyway, can someone that actually goes to the school now or someone that just graduated answer me?

The JEB is a pretty chill school. If you go to class, then they'll kiss your ass. The school is divided between rich white kids and poor Hispanic kids, but they get along. No drugs, no gangs, like the schools on the other end of the county, like Lake Braddock, Centreville, and Westfield.

I went to Jeb Stuart. It is a school with an awesome diversity of people. There are all kind of people but while inside the school they all behave, I have to let you know that is one of the most controled schools. You have to scan an ID every morning and if you havent a machine will call your home in a moment. Kids are suspended for all kind of little things so you better behave or you are out. You can learn a lot from all around the world if you are a friendly person. They also have really nice programs. The futbol team is not great but they do good in other stuff. A lot of Universities will be interted in you if you graduate from here. Gangs are not there anymore and everything is really clean and shinny. White kids are afraid of latin kids because in this school there are a lot of them that look like from the gang but do better in school. Spanish kids have really good grades and are in the hardest classes and in all the clubs. Jeb Stuart is a really fun place.

Jeb Stuart was the worst school around when I was there in the 90's. There WERE gangs, hispanic, asian, black, you name it. There were fights in the hallway all the time, I've witnessed someone get stabbed, guns pulled out on students and teachers, as well as a weekly firedrill as the result of some dumbass setting the bushes on fire outside. The school has BARBED WIRE FENCES circeling it!!! What does that tell you! Prisons do that, not schools. How can a kid be expected to learn to their full potential in an environment like that. I was exposed to weed, coke, crack and alcohol in the bathrooms - it was an absolute mess. I finally, and thankfully moved out of there and graduated from Chantilly.

The school had barbed wire fences in the 60s and 70s when Stuart generally outperformed Jefferson (before it was a magnet science/tech school) academically. I had heard that Stuart was pretty run-down in the 90s before Mel Riddile arrived on the scene and turned it around.

A lot of people would avoid Chantilly just because it's so big. I also suspect that whatever illegal substances floated around Stuart could be found in Chantilly in larger quantities.

I guess things change over the years.... anyone from the 70's remember Mr. Lilly eating worms (but my real allegiance was to Mr. Conrad)? And Mr. Dillard's lemon-yellow suit? and we all know that Miss Mask was the BEST! I don't know about being prep--that crew team worked like crazy, and started on Lake Barcroft with one leaky shell and "uniforms" that their moms made from undershirts!

J.E.B. Stuart is a very controlled and fantastic school to go to, it is safe and very fun. All students at the school know each other and all get along.
I attended this school freshman and sophomore year then attended annandale hs junior year, which was totally different, not as diverse, there were too many kids and i saw a different one every day. As for stuart you see all of your friends and the school isn't so big, so it is easy to find your classes on time. I am now a senior at J.E.B Stuart.

I think he was married in the 80s to a student who graduated in the mid-70s, and that he later remarried. He was a really good teacher.

Good for you. I didn't realize that the QB is Ray Friday's son. Friday was a legend in the 1970s (NoVa player of the year) when Stuart won the regional championship.

Stuart in the late 70s was basically like Madison or McLean today, but with fewer Asians. Juliane Moore (Julie Smith) went there. There were lots of preppies and fraternities and sororities called "service clubs" (Key, Keyette, Civitans, Cavalettes, Hi-Y, Tri-Hi-Y, etc.). It was 5% Hispanic at most.

Things started to change a bit in the 80s. A lot of the people in Lake Barcroft stayed in their homes even after the kids went off to school, and Culmore filled up with immigrants.

Not saying it's bad now, but it's definitely different.

Winter of 1980 I think....dude hopped into an unattended police cruiser at the Culmore 7-11 (the cop was in the store and left the engine running!!!). The car was found later that evening crashed through the chain-link fence at Stuart. Dude was never caught.

Stuart was okay in the early 70's. I came from an overseas tour with my family and it was rather clique oriented and still a bit preppy, Barcrofts hung with Barcrofts etc... It was hard getting dates. I had more dates with girls from Falls Church than Stuart. Good art teachers, Math too.

Football was good, I think 8-2 for the 4 years I was there. Wrestling was good too. Crew did well.

Probably typical for the early 70's. Blue jeans and bell bottoms were authorized in '69. We used to go down to D.C. and check out the antiwar protests. Beer drinkers and stoners were fairly common. More beer drinkers. Lot's of party action in Barcroft, cruisin' around the lake, checking out the scene on Friday nights.

Some good cover bands were there. Greasy Pig, Road Apple, Crossroads, a few others. The school band was huge.

They had a cannon that was fired when touchdowns were scored. That was pretty neat. Loud too.

Fairfax County cops were always partolling the area, probably due to the money at Barcroft. It is a nice neighborhood.

The drummer from the Doobie Brothers went to Stuart in the 60's. Tiny something...

Stuart kids called FC students "grits" back then.

Well looks like JEB has changed over the decades, i am currently in Stuart (currently a senior). While my four years there i have witnessed countless fights...but nothing serious...i have seen crack pipes and weed...now in JEB marijuana is the number one drug in the school....recently JEB has increased police influence in the school because of higher presence of drug usage in bathrooms ( i have smelled it, in the boys bathroom near the main gym ) and also the selling of heroin and other drugs. There is a heavy influence of MS13 gang members probably because of neighborhoods like Culmore and Seven Corners (I live in Seven Corners). There are cliques of course like whites/whites, hispanics/hispanics, blacks/blacks, muslims/muslims, asians/asians. But even though there are cliques they do not ignore each other they still speak especially ESOL kids stick together. JEB is a good school, i would have liked to go to Annandale though.

Hey fellow Raiders,
I think I've got some good stories to share. Stuart was good and bad, as it is with most things. I'll bet it is the same now. High School is a microcosm of the real world. Teenagers do what they are supposed to do. That is reach for all the priveledges and freedom they can. Avoid as much responsibility as possible.
The class of '71 experienced some interesting times. There was the social upheaval of the struggle for minorirty rights with rioting in D.C., assasinations of prominent leaders,anti-war protests with students wearing black or red, white, and blue armbands on campus. Men landed on the Moon. Stuart participated in the first Earth Day. We entered three floats in the Cherry Blossum Parade with environmental themes but weren't allowed to participate because our floats "expoused a cause". We were allowed to park the floats on the Washington Monument grounds.
We had an underground newspaper, "Yer Analysis 302", that helped end the career of our principal. He chose to retire rather than continue to deal with kids who were entirely getting out of hand.
The class of "71 was irreverent. We always came in last in the canned food drive. "We're number four!" We broke with tradition and graduated on the football field instead of at Constitution Hall. Our choice of person to address our graduation was protested by many of our parents.
My best friend shot himself in the head.
The service clubs were a substitue for the greeks, complete with hazing.
We had the cliques: Jocks, Intellectuals, Hippies and the masses.
Sports were fun. We broke Annandales 40+ game winning streak. And there was more.
I've got a pretty good senior skip day story.
Musically, it was a great era, but I suppose all are when we reminise about the soundtracts of our youth. I was a roadie for a locally popular rock party band.
Class of '71 was 40 years ago. I am 57. Wanna hear my lame stories?

Does anyone remember Jeremy Worrell, JEB Stuart graduate of 86'? I hope someone knows of this guy, because he was my track coach at Centreville, and I never knew what to think of this guy for many reasons...

I heard he was one of the best athletes to come out of JEB Stuart, and ran track at Villanova, which I don't doubt, There was also rumors that he ran track professionally, and was playing WR for the NY Giants till he blew out his knee.

He knew how to teach his athletes a good work ethic, many of them being some of the best runners in the area, but he kept pushing his athletes too far with the same work ethic at practice during competition season that many of his runners ended up with stress related-season ending injuries.

But the messed up part was while he was demanding these crazy practices, he stood around on the track talking into his blue tooth the WHOLE time, talking to his clients about whatever businesses he was doing.

To top it off, the dude was married with a toddler and would bring a chick that wasnt his wife with him to stay in his hotel room when we had long distance traveling meets.

In the later 60's and early 70's JEB Stuart was an excellent school that was superior in academics and very respectable in sports, as well as other school related activities. It's heavy weight 8 rowing team in 1968 won the Henely Regatta in England, widely regarded as the world championship for high school rowers and the crew team continued to garner national championships in various catagories into the 1970's. It's football team of '74-'75 made it to the semifinals. It produced a number of National Merit Society semifinalists and finalists during the late 60's and early to mid '70's, too. Some of the alums from these years include a Vice President of one of the largest pharacuetical firms in the world, a professor at ASU who is one of the worlds leading experts in industrial ecology and numerous doctors, lawyers, and professionals who are leaders in their fields. At least 15 of these people that I know of are multimillionaires. In the mid 70's the Principal of that time, William Parish (who was seldom seen outside of his office) and his Assistant Principal, a man by the name of Dillard, allowed social tensions due to lack of equal enforcement of discipline to cause a large fight (some say riot) to occur in December of 1975. This marked the beginning of the shool's decline in both academics, competitive sports and school social activities (debate team, Key Club, etc.) Looking at the schools condition now, it is obvious that it is an average to inferior academic institution (despite what National Geographic may believe). I noticed that the school's official history mentions none of it's success in the 60's and 70's, perhaps because the comparison is emabarrassing. If an individual has aspirations beyond a high school education (or a parent wishes to see their child excel and succeed), this is obviously NOT a school they would want to be attending!

I graduated from Jeb Stuart 2004, my experience there....You have the moderate to rich kids from the barcroft and sleepy hollow area. And some average to lower income kids from culmore. And your average family income kids from other areas. It was a very average high school and no gangs that were present when I was there. Never saw any kids being bullied. Overall, in terms of violence/drugs, it has to be one of the best schools in the county for that. I know back in the 80's to early 90's it was known for gangs and fights. But culmore is no longer that way it is. Completely changed by the time I joined there and I was surprised to hear some of the violent stories from the professors that have been there that long. It is a very diverse school with regards to ethnicity and social-economic class of kids. I graduated with friends from many ethnicities, I wouldn't have had that experience if I went elsewhere. We sucked in sports except swimming and golf.

@retired consultant - I'm betting you'd like a school more like this...........

What in the hell are you talking about? You seem to know just enough about the school to write a bunch of nonsense.

Stuart was actually one of the strongest high schools in the county well into the late 1970s. The changes at Stuart had nothing to do with the so-called "riot" in December 1975 (which was basically a bunch of black kids setting off fire extinguishers in the hallways one afternoon). The changes occurred when all the poor Asians, Hispanics and Middle Easterners started pouring into Culmore in the 1980s (the Asians didn't stay in that area too long, eventually heading further west when they started to make more money). By all accounts, things were somewhat out of control by the late 80s, but have since improved a lot.

It's a pretty diverse school today - just as portrayed in the National Geographic article. You have lower-income kids from Culmore, middle-income kids from Falls Church and Annandale, and rich kids from Lake Barcroft and Sleepy Hollow. For the most part, they get along pretty well.

Loved Miss Mask - I was a photographer for Raiders Digest in 1974. Loved her. Thought she was just "another woman teacher" who never got married. A more mature me understands her lifestyle that was then hidden and buried deeply.

She was stung by 100's of bees in '75 and almost died. Took her awhile to get her health back.

Liked Mr. Roylance -- he ran the yearbook.

Played basketball often with Tommy Shadyac. Didn't know he grew up to become a famous director (Evan Almighty, etc.)

Someone above said Stuart was a preppy school in the 70's. Not true, just a quality public high school. At that time, the demographics were probably 85% white, 10% black and the rest everyone else. I'm stunned to see today's demographics.

Still, felt weird to wear those football helmets with the Confederate stars-n-bars along with several black players. Just seemed strange, a black guy wearing the Confederate flag.

Stuart Football was great in the late 60's to mid 70's with Coach Jerry Fauls leading the way. Gene Sullenberger was a good QB, Scott Burton replaced him and led the team to an 8-2 record in 73 ('74 was like 5-5). Ray Friday was the best running back we ever had -- he went to Ga. Tech and became a linebacker. In the late 60's, Mrs. Vidnovic's son Nick was the QB and did well. He became the starter at North Carolina.

Jim O'Brien was a superb basketball player in the late 60's and was part of a great University of Maryland basketball team.

My brother was the opposite Defensive End when Roger Stillwell (Bears) was on the team.

Teddy Marchibroda played WR for the football team in 73-75 when his dad was an assistant coach with the Redskins. Games against Langley were big-time as we had Ted Marchibroda rooting his son the Raider against George Allen and his sons Bruce and George playing for Langley.

That 74-75 team that almost made it to state was led by Ray Friday and Bruce Wiley. They played the second regional game at Woodson, and, after leading most of the game, the other team scored with a minute or so left in the game. On the 30 yard line, Stuart did a hook-and-ladder and scored with seconds remaining, winning the game. They next played Bethel High and lost. Their QB was Mike Dunne who went on to QB Clemson in the late '70's.

Ah....memories.

John Tobin was the bada$$ fullback blowing holes open for Friday. Tobin, even though a fullback in football, was the only kid fast enough at a MLB scouting session to even draw attention from the scouts there. Owns a small local business now.

Teddy Marchibroda, as a baseball player, was one of the only players around to have the defense play a shift on him. As a right-handed batter, he absolutely could not hit a ball to the left side of second base. It was almost comical.

Shadyac (Cable Guy, etc.) and his brother played basketball.

This may have been mentioned above, but they, along with TC Williams, had crew teams back in the day, and I believe that one of their boats won the Henley Regatta in England.

It was one of the best schools in the County back in the 60s and 70s, and seems to be holding its head above water these days, unlike then-rival Falls Church HS.

@Active Consultant: You obviously were not there in December 1975. I was. It was not "...a bunch of black kids setting off fire extinguishers..." A white student hit a black student with a stolen police baton. Two white students were expelled following the incident. If you're going to criticize the post get your facts straight. It does seem that I was wrong about my assesment of the school presently. It sounds better than what I'd heard according to some accounts given by students currently attending. My apologies. However, It's academic standing is no where near what it used to be. @Farid: John Banks was the QB of the team in 1975. It was an excellent football team that lost only when they opted to go for a TD against Bethel instead of having Kip Germain kick a field goal. Stu Singer (math teacher) married Melody M., a student of his in the 70's. There were some great teachers in the 70's (some mentioned). I'd also like to thank Dr. Nalls, Miss Stubbs, Mr. Varner, and other fine educators of the early 70's. Irv Dodd was one of the best crew coaches of all time in Northern Va rowing. He left Stuart to coach at TCW in '76, I think.

Melody Melcher?? She was very cute and sweet.
Mr. Varner was cool guy.

Yeah, I was there in '75. I was in Chemistry class w/Mrs. O'Neill when the mini-riot took place. Our door was closed and what we were told later was that some black kids had set off fire extinguishers. Never heard about the expulsions. I do recall that the mysterious "Dr. Spector" seemed to spend the better part of the next year at the school debriefing people and analyzing why some of the kids felt left out.

All I remember of Mr. Varner was his always saying "jot this down." Ms. Stubbs taught Janis Joplin in Texas before she moved East. Mr. Singer was a very good teacher.

I suppose the full story wasn't given to students, Active Consultant. Mr. Dillard told some of us involved "not to talk about it" after interviewing us when we came back from Christmas break. A guy who knew the people involved had told me (he had one of the expelled guys in Mrs. Peyton's class the year before - she was another good teacher) it wasn't so much a race thing as it was a personal dispute. Sorry for sniping at you. It was a long time ago. Anyway, those teachers at Stuart gave me a decent enough education to get through college and I appreciated them for that. Yes, DH, word was that it was Melody. I guess Stu got around a bit!

Probably a sign of the times that a math teacher with a Fu Manchu could be the Lothario of Peace Valley Lane. Mr. Singer was married when I had him for Algebra II/Trig. Within 5-10 years, he was married to Melody Melcher. 20 years later he was married to yet another woman named Sheri or Sherri, as I recall.

Apart from the fact that Stuart was surrounded by a barb wire fence that gave it the feel of a concentration camp, it was a pretty decent school in the 70s.

Stuart has always been in the top three hundred or less high schools in the nation. Has had one high school all american (Jim Obrien). Vied for NOVA Football and Basketball Championships in sixties.

Stuart is an utterly mediocre school whose students try to be more punkass then they really are. There's no longer ID cards or checkins anywhere. Students frequently skip class and go off campus for lunch. There's the occasional break in, fights, or graffiti, but nothing terrible. The teacher's are okay but seem burnt out and are unwilling to do anything to help their students-unless you're a complete shit who never goes to class or hands anything in. Then people are running all over the place making sure that you graduate. The IB program sets kids up for failure and does nothing to impress colleges. The school is divided along economic lines. There's the rich (mainly white) kids from Barcroft/Sleepy Hollow, who take IB classes, are involved in every sport under the sun, and only put a minimal effort into school. Then there's the poor kids from Culmore who are all in ESOL classes and don't play any sports, mainly because they can't understand English. If you're a transfer student, you're out of luck. The rich kids won't have anything to do with you unless you have a good dealer or a frequently empty house for parties. (If you're from Culmore then the other ESOL kids will take you in.) But if you've lived in Falls Church all of your life, went to Glasgow, and remember these kids from playdates back when y'all where in diapers you'll do just fine.
