Toads,
Vultures,
snapping turtles,
Deer,
Rabbits,
Possums,
Damn Canadian Geese.

Anyone else notice there are more and more Geese ALL over the place? They are blocking traffic on Main street just as you enter FX city. Both East bound Lanes in front of the Giant and across from the Gas station. They also like to Hang out in the FairOaks Mall parking lot and Hiss at people trying to get into department stores.

I've got a fox living behind my house who I've seen stray out into the open a few yards beyond the tree line into my yard. I've seen him maybe 10 or so times.

He's real tiny though. A runt. A skinny little guy.

Canada Geese also generate a lot of bird crap. For some odd reason, they're still a Federally protected species despite the large increases in their population. As I recall, they have no natural predators.

The Geese crossing main street were lucky the Construction Vehicles didnt turn into predators! One other note. There are geese all over the place by reston Hospital. One of them followed some lil kid into the emergency room door by stepping on the auto door. It swung open and the goose came sashaying on in looking for more bites from this kid's sandwich.

Canada geese are protected under the migratory birds act. The theory is that if we kill the birds here, it will later have a negative impact on the environment of the places they migrate too/from. While the law makes sense in this way, I believe technology has made it possible to determine safe limits for reducing this nuiscance, and act accordingly.

I have seen water moccasins, and I once had a few wild bats fly over me outside of a cave in loudon.

I'd like to see a list of farm snimals in the county, as I have seen a peacock, miniature donkeys, and pigmy goats, all living here in fairfax.

Add lizards (small), groundhogs, woodpeckers and, of course, squirrels!

Anyone ever have a woodpecker land on your rooftop vent and start pecking away? Sounds like a machine gun going off - reverbs through the whole house! Great to wake up to early Sunday morning.

Many people consider any snake in the water as being a 'water moccasin', which isn't true. There are a few poisonous snakes in this area, not many luckily. IIRC, when I checked it out a few years ago, there were three poisonous species in Northern Virginia. I found a pretty good link, if y'all wanna check it out:

http://fwie.fw.vt.edu/VHS/snakes_of_virginia.htm

Pretty much all the species I've seen in this area have already been listed. Now that I'm living in Prince William County, I see some other ones. Driving down an old country road at 3:00am one night, I spotted a HUGE fox, so big it took me a second to identify it as a fox. By far the biggest one I've ever seen.

well, you got me on the snake id, I'm basically saying someone pointed at a snake in the water and said "look, a water moccasin" and I was like "cool". For all I know it was a rattlesnake.

I mean, wiki does say we have them in Virginia but gets no more specific then swamps and bayous:

Yes I kayaked in that Dismal swamp and I saw many snakes. Bad ones too!!!! Here in this county I have seen foxes and wild turkeys. I see lots of deer right near the GMU field house. Some person who lived on 123 right across from the court house used to have a pony living in their garage but he is no longer living there. I think he may have been a wild pony. He used to eat apples right out of my hand.

This is kinda funny 'cause there's a steady progression of what I've seen in my apartment complex since moving here (Centreville) a year ago.

I first moved in and noticed a bunch of rabbits all over. Nice, right? Well a few weekends later I was on the porch and heard something skittering around, and a possum popped out from the bushes a few feet away from me and walked away. Possums suck. Then a few weeks later I almost hit a skunk in the parking lot.

I still see a ton of rabbits and foxes running around the complex, but no more nasty possums or skunks since.

Centreville also seems to be a hot-spot for those huge-ass wolf spiders, the ones that are about 2 inches across. Some may not consider spiders worth mentioning, but I'd be surprised if one of those fuckers couldn't take down a hummingbird. I (hopefully) always catch them when they get about halfway across the living room.

If you have a sharp eye and quick reflexes, you'll see the rare DC hummingbird, particularly closer in to Washington. They're about 9mm in diameter, and have a pretty copper color. Be careful, though, because if they fly into your head or chest they can be lethal.

There is apparently a Bald Eagle that lives, or used to live in the vicinity of Bull Run, fountainhead area. I knew it was an eagle, but under comfirmation it was most definately a bald eagle. I had no clue that there were any left around here.

There used to be a white squirrel that lived in my old neighborhood in Brookfield. Everyone thought it was albino, however its eyes were black...

I've also seen red-tailed and other hawks, more often the hawks I see are large and brown.

The wiki also says they are in VA, but does not get specific about location other than to say "water areas" like swamps and bayous. Tgis area used to be a lot of swamp... why could moccasins not still live here? They may just be occasional like rattlesnakes.

Every so often you hear about a rattler that made it down from the appalachians into our humble civ.

I've seen one confirmed timber rattler that was caught in the hills right near Dulles.

Spot on. As a guy who hunts and fishes, the vast majority are in the Chesapeake/Hampton Roads area. They are certainly one aggressive species, and will not hesitate to bite. There are absolutely none up here.

PS. 'Smart' and 'liberal' tend to occur together. So do 'Trump supporter' and 'Dumb as a fucking stick.'
