Where's The Best Place to Watch the Rocket Launch Tonight?
Posted by: Space Cadet ()

NASA WALLOPS FLIGHT FACILITY, VA – Tens of millions of US East Coast residents can expect a dinnertime spectacular for the first ever nighttime launch of the commercial Orbital Sciences Corp. Antares rocket slated to blastoff on Monday evening, October 27, from a beachside NASA launch base along the eastern shore of Virginia – if the weather holds as currently forecast.

Antares is carrying Orbital’s private Cygnus cargo freighter loaded with a diverse array of science experiments on a critical cargo resupply mission named Orb-3, and is bound for the International Space Station (ISS).

NASA and Orbital Sciences are now targeting liftoff at 6:45 p.m. EDT on Oct. 27 from Launch Pad 0A at the Mid-Atlantic Regional Spaceport (MARS) at NASA Wallops Island Flight Facility on Virginia’s shore.

You're right!

That does face SE, I was looking for the 14th st bridge on the far right of the picture.

If it's a clear night, it will be 1.48 seconds of pure adrenaline!

Are there any restaruants or bars that have porches that face east with an unobstructed view?

The best would be a restaurant on the top floor of building that faces east.

What about Red Rocks? Don't they have third floor porch?

The countdown is progressing smoothly today for the launch of Orbital Sciences Corp.’s Antares rocket, with the Cygnus cargo spacecraft on top. There are no technical concerns with the rocket or spacecraft being worked. The weather for this evening’s launch is predicted to be 99 percent favorable.

Liftoff is scheduled for 6:45 p.m. EDT from the Mid-Atlantic Spaceport's Pad 0A at NASA's Wallops Flight Facility in Virginia.

I've tried to see launches from Wallops at the Alexandria waterfront looking east, and couldn't see shit. It was during the day. I did see a huge contrail from Fairfax from a Minotaur launch a number of years ago, but not the rocket itself.

For the record, Antares is a piece of shit mostly built by Yuzhnoye SDO.

Did anyone else see two falling objects in the SE sky last night? It was right after the scheduled launch time, could've sworn it was boosters falling off. They fell for at least 90 seconds- flares maybe?

^^^^^We watched from our driveway with baited breath, eyes towards the East. We saw moving bright lights right at the time and place we were told to expect them (had not heard about the scrubbed launch). We gasped with anticipation. We were considering taking pictures....then realized the lights were AIRPLANES.

I saw the Minotaur 1 launch last year from the top of a Reston Town Center parking garage on Explorer St. while facing Reston Parkway. Not sure of the exact direction, but it was visible as it rose above a tall building catty corner to where I was standing.

If we lowered taxes on the top one percent even more this type of thing would not happen. The extra millions on top of millions they would earn from paying less in taxes would go directly to things like roads, schools and of course the space program vis-a-vis charity and investment in onshore business vs. the many tax shelters the rich are fond of when taxes are too high.

If only the rich had more money our problems would all be solved. One last thing the kids, the infirm and elderly on foodstamps are lazy scum that cause rockets to blow up on the pad.
