So we are sacrificing our Middle Schoolers for the High Schoolers? Who thought it would be good for 7th & 8th graders to be at bus stops at 6:30 and in the dark? Brilliant--are'd middle schoolers adolescents too? I guess no one cares about them. Thanks FCPS for caving in to the vocal few who don't seem to be able to look at the big picture and take ALL STUDENTS' well being into account when making this very short sighted decision.

Of course, now the middle schoolers will have to awaken at 5:00 am to make the bus at 6:30 for a 7:30 start time.

But that wasn't the point. What do you think the SLEEPERs will attack next?

Just to be clear, at back to school night there was a video of Dan Storck (you know, the guy on the school board who looks like Abe Lincoln) complaining about the school system having budget gaps. But then they turn around and pass this to add $4.9 million in expenses? Makes no sense. And you know there's no way it's coming in that low. It will be $10 million within three years, guaranteed.

The thing is I don't personally know any parents that were in favor of this change. Notice how the school board would never discuss or reveal what kind of feedback they were getting. We all know it was overwhelmingly against.

Middle school will start 30 minutes earlier which is tough for them. But I think many kids would rather start early 2 years in middle school than 4 years of high school. I think it makes a lot of sense. Then factor all in the extraciriculars at high schools such as sports which often run until 1030, 11 on school nights; theater, band, and other clubs which go daily and I am sold.

If you're doing your job as a parent it is a lot easier to get your middle schoolers to bed at a reasonable hour than a high schooler. Now how big a difference 30 minutes will make is debatable, I am just saying I see the logic.

Did anyone at the meeting point out that the entire basis for the later start time is a lie???

"This change is being considered due to the compelling evidence that later high school start times for students result in better grades, less depression, fewer behavioral issues, and lower risk of car crashes, among other benefits. The American Academy of Pediatrics recently issued a statement in strong support of later school start times for teens to address chronic sleep deprivation among adolescents and to improve teen health, academic performance, and safety."

Compelling evidence? None.

AAP "statement?" Planted by a SLEEP member. Sad that they bought it.

Relationship between later start times and more sleep for teens? None.

Showing that a small group of misguided people can cause the school board to spend $4,900,000? BINGO!

Thinking that this "victory" will shut up those biddies? Ha HA HA HA!!!!

If this helps keeping school buses off our streets during rush hour, I support it. It's more important that working folks get to work without being stuck behind buses. Teach your kids to go to bed earlier and wake up on time.

Yea I know that means going to bed early but hey that's life

It doesn't really. All they did was flip the middle and high school start times. Overall bus schedules shouldn't change too much. Just a different group of kids getting on at 630 now.

The budget crisis now is nothing compared to what it's about to become. Not only do we now have to fund the recurring costs associated with full day Mondays and the bus schedule changes, but in two years (I believe...maybe 3) the county needs to come up with more money to fund the VRS which the state voted a few years back would now have to be paid for by the county.

If only there was some evidence of this supposed support, but sadly the $100K we gave to some "research staff" created a few generic PowerPoint slides and a poorly designed website.

It is funny that no one calls out SLEEP on their hypocrisy. They claim to want a healthy start time for everyone, but first they came after elementary students, and when common sense prevailed, then they sacrificed the middle schoolers.

And, according to SLEEP, the later start times were supposed to free or even save money. I guess they were wrong about that too.

All of this just shows that the School Board is run by morons.

I never heard any parents talking in favor of it either. I don’t believe the Board intended to hear and consider the public. I believe the Board was set on doing this and strategized the move toward it so as not to make too many ripples. My question is why? Why did THEY want it? I have this looming question in my mind “Who’s getting the kickback?"

And I don't know that many high school kids that support it either. The problem has always been that they are overextended with way too many activities and advanced classes to go to bed at a reasonable time. Changing the start time doesn't fix that. Now practices, games, etc. will start 30 minutes later, so they haven't netted any time. Plus they will spend more time in traffic (remember that high schoolers travel farther to school then middle schoolers typically), so the 40 minutes they have been given will probably only be 30.
You can't make more than 24 hours in a day...what a waste of $5 million.

Huh? Middle schooler's time will be about the same (5 min later). So when you say 'now' you men they will 'still' have to make a 730 start time. As to waking up at 5 to make a 630 bus - are you insane? I HATE early start times and I hate waking up early but we have been getting up at 6am to make a 635am bus (I saw a satellite in the starry sky just this morning).

Getting a 12 yr. old up at 6am, (that will be oficially 'night' next week) is stupid. We have a 2billion a year budget and somehow we cannot let kids start school the same times we did in the 60's (when there was 90% income tax on the richest). Why is that?

Its called compromise. It would have been better for everyone to start the same time we did in the 1960's (you know the 'good old days') but like everything else, everyone cried about it costing 50 million dollars. So yes my kids, middle schoolers continue to get screwed and wake up long before sunrise to go 'learn'

The school board does whatever it needs to so it can get reelected. Perfect hot button issue "solved" by perfect politicians equals lots of votes. Ugh.

Non-school board politicians are all over the radio this morning mocking the school board for their decision, and telling them not to ask for more money next year. WMAL spent 15 minutes on the subject with "expert" callers telling them why later start times does not mean more sleep for teens.

Sharon Bolova was more direct in expressing her "concern" of school board spending priorities.

One school board member voted against the change, and is being made out to be a courageous hero.

I am glad people are all over them but depressed that the board is too idiotic to realize that the later start time will change nothing. It MAY screw the middles schoolers though.
No money for the school board means no money for teachers. What a waste

WMAL is too predictable sometimes. If they thought the School Board was conservative republican they he hailing this as the best thing they ever did.

Should be an interesting budget cycle this year. Maybe the Board of Supervisors will actually turn the screws on the school system.

I am a parent and I support this change. The health of my teen rapidly declined when he had to wake up early and he slept through his first class as did many other teens. We got around this by taking online classes in the afternoon after school and senior late start this year. He still goes to sleep at the same time...around 10:00 but his brain is awake and he is ready to learn by his first class at 8:50. His gpa went from 2.75 freshman year to 3.2 junior year. There are the true stats.

Later start times are for the average B-C sloths.

Motivated teens will have access to an expanded list of before school activities, ranging from study sessions to sports training to clubs they did not have time for after school.

If, as expected, the high schools remain locked to teens until 7:30 am, they will find other locations to meet.

In the end, there will be more whining about the gap between the achievers and non-achievers. With a correlation between bus riding for the late arrivals versus the high achievers who will drive from their before-school activities.
