"Grandmas, it seems, have taken to Facebook. And although the site is phasing out of popularity among young people, seniors are fully embracing it. Since 2000, the number of adults 65 and older who use the Internet has increased from 14 percent to 59 percent. And in that group, nearly half use a social networking site such as Facebook.

“As you get older, you become socially isolated, especially when your family lives far away. So an opportunity to get online and see what their grandkids are up to this weekend? That really appeals to them” says Saffron Cassaday, the director of “Cyber Seniors,” a 2014 documentary about teenagers teaching residents of retirement homes to use the Internet."

This is moronic.

Of course the percentage of seniors now using the Internet is far higher than in 2000. There barely was an Internet in 2000 and not nearly as many people of all ages used it. You probably could make exactly the same case for those 18 and under. There also wasn't anywhere close to the numbers of computers and other devices and ubiquitous connectivity.

The people now reaching the ago of "seniors" are the ones who built the Internet, personal computers, networking and associated protocols, cellular networks, relational databases, HTML/CSS/Java/JavaScript/C/object-oriented programming, visual IDEs, etc., etc., to begin with. lol

The only problem is in order to have something continue to be viable, you need to have young people be involved. If all you have are seniors and 113 yr olds using your product, both them and your business will be taking the dirt nap soon.

I think this is true of more than just elderly internet users.

Blessed are the murderous.

Not entirely true. Every year people turn old. You get a whole new crop of customers. By your logic old folks homes would have been out of business years ago, and yet they're popping up like mushrooms after the rain.

Without a new growth strategy, Facebook is the new MySpace.

Welcome to capitalism.

FB has become a mom'n'pop social network. I'm 26 and the most active users are: my grandma, my aunt, my gf's mom, and another one of my friend's mom. When I got fb when I was 18 it was about saying whatever you wanted, posting pics doing crazy shit, and creeping on girls in college. now it's PC and filled w/ baby boomers (and up).

everyone my age moved to twitter/instagram/snapchat/etc.

OMG! Old people (well, people in their 50s) are posting on Facebook! Fear not, however - twitter is so fucking superficial and aggravating we're not going anywhere near it.

I can't wait until farcebook is gone forever. The writing's on the wall now, it's only a matter of time before it fades away into the night. And we'll all be better off for it. Let's try to speed up the process now and eradicate it from our society, one fleeing member at a time...

Contrary to what you and your generation were brought up to believe, the internet is for everyone, not narcisstic 20 somethings that recently moved out of mom's basement
