People's behavior at stop lights
Posted by: Can't figure it out ()

Why is it that so many people are stopping a car length OR MORE from the white line at intersections when there's a red light?

It didn't used to be like that, but it seems to be happening more and more. The DMV manual says "Red light: At a red light, come to a complete stop at the stop line or, if there is no stop line, before entering the intersection or before reaching the crosswalk."

So why the hell are people stopping so far back? At many intersections there is a sensor under the pavement that affects the traffic lights. It doesn't get activated if you aren't on it.

I think they're eager to start playing with their little phones and they just grab them and stop paying attention such that they stop wherever. Notice how the same people leave too much space between cars when they stop and then act surprised when you beep the horn to ask them to move up so you can get into the turn lane. They also have no idea when the light's turned green.

Because it's NOVA and it's a requirement to drive like crap. Just honk your horn at them and then give them a dirty look, that should learn em.

because the red light cameras are activated on the white line.
Once you've gotten that ticket, you don't do it again.

What's funnier is when you see these morons stop five feet over the stop line in a turn lane, and then they wonder why they're not getting an arrow when the light changes. There's a light near my house that constantly has idiots in the turn lane creeping out further and further, until somebody comes in behind them to trip the light.

Heh. That often happens at the light leaving our neighborhood. Sometimes when I'm not in a hurry, I'll go the other way so as not to pull in behind the person and trip the light for them. If you make a right on red, normally the sensor can detect that and won't trip the light.

Some people can't see the light if they pull up too close. They might be too tall, or the light is at a weird angle.

I know exactly what your talking about. From what I can tell it's actually a weird passive aggressive dominance thing that's been imported into America via Asian and 3rd world drivers. By stopping so far back you're typically in a superior position to observe and monitor other drivers who stop at the line, and you can stare blankly at them without their noticing if you wish. I'm not saying people do this consciously.. It's more of a subconscious tick that gets spread as people encounter cunts who do it.

They love stopping at a red light so they can play with their electronic toys and then they finally realize the light is green and start about 5-10 seconds late, which causes plenty of other drivers who would have made the light and don't play with toys, to miss the green light.....this goes on all day and traffic gets worse.

I can't stand when people are stopped at a light and they leave such big gaps between cars and will randomly move up at their leisure.

What's even worse are the people that sit window to window, you never go window to window! It's a common courtesy and if you creepy up and go window to window you better be asking for help!!!

Have you ever noticed, at some intersections, people will stop on a green light when turning right to let all of the cross traffic turn left in front of them? I don't get that at all. What's weird is it seems to only happen at particular intersections, but happens regularly.

That is because they learned to drive in places like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PySM8dGaNLo

They are confused by concepts like lines, turn lanes, right-of-way, etc. and refuse to learn.

LOL just yesterday to my left someone stopped with a full car's length in front of them at the light. I've seen it all my time driving so don't think it's a cell phone thing.

Don't drive drunk or high is my only guess.

I am amazed at how dimwitted some people are. The reason lots like to keep a car length space at lights is because we have no desire to hit the car in front of us. Simple, huh? You clowns can get in all the chain-pileups you want, just leave me out of it!

That's understandable. What they're talking about is when you're the lead car and you're stopped too far back from where you supposed to (i.e. the white line).

The first in line people who stay behind the line are just about
always foreigners who don't understand rules of the road and can't read English!

I think people have no idea how long the front of their car is since about 10 years ago when car designs dropped the tip of the hood down so it is out of sight. Now that you noticed that, you'll see how far away the are from car in front of them when they are trying to get as close as they can. Its a joke.
