Why I am Voting for Ed Gillespie for Senate
Posted by: Voting Absentee Today ()
Date: October 23, 2014 08:28AM

The advertising and phone calls are beyond annoying, from both parties. The final straw was yesterday's mail from Gerry Connolly, who is guaranteed a win for reelection to his Congressional seat. He did not need to send such a negative post card blasting his opponent without even mentioning his accomplishments as a Congressman.

It's obvious to me that whoever holds the majority gets what they want in Congress. The minority party is reduced to complaining and hoping they get some money for their home states.

That's why I am voting for Gillespie over Warner today. The majority for the next two years will be Republican. From one of their emails:

* FiveThirtyEight predicts Republicans have a 62% chance of winning the Senate.

* LEO (The New York Times) has Republicans with a 69% chance of taking the Senate.

* Election Lab (Washington Post) says Republicans have a 94% chance of winning a Senate majority!

We can argue all day about who is the better person with the better ideas, but this is just one seat, and I think it's better that one of our Senators be from the majority party.

It's not the better of two evils. It's who will bring home the bacon for Virginia. Not philosophical, just pragmatic for this election.

Warner is a rubber stamp of Obama and voted with him 100% of the time.

I very seriously doubt that Warner read more than a summary of the ACA/ObamaCare bill before fucking up insurance for Virginians like myself.

Not sure if the allegations will stick about the judgeship job bribery he was involved in, but it reaks of typical crony politics. Send some unqualified daughter to the judicial bench? Great.

I voted for Warner in 2008 because I thought he was a decent governor for the state, fuck the guy, I hope he gets ass cancer.

I see one our resident trolls has put in an appearance. Yes some, probably all, of the posters would probably have voted for the Republican candidate regardless. That doesn't mean some of the views are not legitimate. Neither side has a monopoly on the truth. Despite how some like to view things as "right v. wrong", it is more often right v. right or wrong v. wrong.

Bill.N. When did you become so philosophical and wise? Please, fill is in on your great knowledge and awareness of what is truly true and what is not around you. Simple minded folk such as myself can do nothing but envy your such splendid abilities. Please don't frown upon us for believing in the the two party paradigm.

I have one objective and one only, finish off the Republican party politically. After that objective is met, all Democrats can go to hell too.

Vote John Warner, Ed Gillespie is the most corrupt lobbyist/ Party Fund Raiser in the whole damn country right now.

You literally cannot not find a bigger piece of shit anywhere in America than Ed Gillespie to be your Senator.

Enron Lobbyist/ Republican fund raiser extraordinaire. His resume reads like an indictment.

John Warner is not running for Senator. Mark Warner is. You know, the Mark Warner who voted with O 97%of the time--you know, the Obama you love!

And, by the way, Mark Warner should be investigated for his role in the PUckett saga. "Brainstorming" a federal judgeship smells pretty awful.

As for John Warner--he supported McAwful. His endorsement is not a good thing.

Some assholes keep putting Gillespie signs in our front yard, happened three times now in the past 2 weeks. Not out by the street either, they put them right up by our front door (40-50 feet from the sidewalk). I finally called and was able to speak with his communications office, who acted rude and told me it was against the law for me to remove political signs and that they would prosecute! I explained AGAIN that the signs were placed right outside our door to which he said it "wasn't his problem" and they I should just "get over it". yeah right, I'll kick someone's ass if I see them up near my porch planting that shit.

You want to really do something? Vote for Sarvis. 10% is the threshold for obtaining "major-party" status in Virginia. A vote for Sarvis isn't a vote for the Libertarians so much as it's a vote to change the way elections are conducted in Virginia.

1. Why would I vote for someone who doesn't
pay
into Social Security but I have to?

Who doesn't pay Social Security???

Senate and House Reps do not pay social security. This is true. What they pay instead is something towards some type of other account. This is very TRUE!

2. Why would I vote for someone who only needs
to
serve 1 term in order to receive full
retirement
benefits but I have to work 30 to 40 years in
order to get full retirement?

Not true.

This is very TRUE also. Because they are elected they are not guaranteed a life long position so all that is required is a 1 term service. The words being "elected" and "hired" fall into different categories on the rules of retirement. Congress has manipulated this meaning to their advantage.

3. Why would I vote for someone who has a much
better medical insurance and either pays hardly
anything in money towards dues or doesn't pay
at all?

Myth

Not a myth. Congress does have its' own type of health care. They do not have to take it. They can opt for the regular type of Federal Gov't insurance that the Feds offer. Their health care is more costly, hence, they have a better health plan than "Joe Schmoe".

Every Member of the House and Senate pays Social Security since CSRS was replaced with FERS in 1984.

http://www.ssa.gov/history/hfaq.html

Q5: Is it true that members of Congress do not have to pay into Social Security?

A: No, it is not true. All members of Congress, the President and Vice President, Federal judges, and most political appointees, were covered under the Social Security program starting in January 1984. They pay into the system just like everyone else. Thus all members of Congress, no matter how long they have been in office, have been paying into the Social Security system since January 1984.

Nope. Wrong again.

http://www.senate.gov/reference/common/faq/retirement_for_members.shtml

Members of Congress are eligible for a pension at age 62 if they have completed at least five years of service. They are eligible for a pension at age 50 if they have completed 20 years of service, or at any age after completing 25 years of service. The amount of the pension depends on years of service and the average of the highest three years of salary. By law, the starting amount of a member’s retirement annuity may not exceed 80 percent of his or her final salary.

http://www.factcheck.org/2009/08/health-care-for-members-of-congress/

Members of Congress have good health insurance by any standard, but it’s not free and not reserved only for them – and it’s not government insurance. House and Senate members are allowed to purchase private health insurance offered through the Federal Employees Health Benefits Program, which covers more than 8 million other federal employees, retirees and their families.

The Grassley Amendment has unintentionally ended up forcing Congress and many staffers out of the FEHB exchange. They are required insetad to purchase a Gold Plan through the DC small business exchange created under PPACA in order to keep their employer contributions. Oddly, this plan has terms that are pretty much identical to those under the Blue Cross/Blue Shield high option available through FEHB. Not sure how that could have happened.
