WASHINGTON - As the U.S. Olympics Committee considers D.C.'s bid to host the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic games, insiders say they'll be looking to an event this coming summer to see how our area handles an event nearing the same size.

"2015 is our year for the World Police and Fire Games and we're excited."

Organizer Bill Knight has helped run a World Cup and a Superbowl before, and says this event -- while important in its own right -- will also serve as an example to the U.S. Olympics Committee.

"There's absolutely never been an event of this kind in the national capital region -- multi-sport, multi-venue," Knight says.

The event, open to competitors who work in public safety worldwide, expects to host 12,000 athletes who will compete at 52 regional venues, including opening and closing ceremonies at RFK and Wolftrap.

It's the closest D.C. has gotten to hosting an event of Olympic proportions.

"Just having gone through anything and having a similar experience helps guide you," he says.

When it comes to the number of athletes, the event will be larger than the Summer Olympics in London, which hosted fewer than 11,000 competitors.

The World Police Fire Games called a press conference on Thursday to unveil their budding plan for the event that kicks off June 26 with opening ceremonies at RFK Stadium.

Athletes like Chuck Ryan will be taking part. By day, Ryan is the Special Operations Chief for Fairfax County Fire and Rescue, by night, he's practicing on the ice rink.

Ryan is a forward for the Fairfax County team, and regularly plays against teams of other police and fire jurisdictions including the Secret Service and the FBI.

The event is expected to inject an estimated $60 - $80 million into Northern Virginia.

Quite contrary Mr. Ringo. Just look at the ever so monumental success London and Bejing have inherrited from hosting the Olympiad.

Its what the american people want. The cost doesn't matter. We need to show that we rule the world by having the games at our house. We will have the most exciting marathon ever as the runners dodge bullets on banning rd. I will ask congress to extend the debt so we can wine, dine, and give expensive gifts to the organizers. If they don't give the Olympics to DC, than I will send a couple cruise missiles to the Olympic headquarters. That's what champions do

I disagree, salt lake city didn't fare so well. Hosting is a prestige thing. Beiging did good, but construction is cheap there. And DC local gov has always fucked up everything.

Think of the Olympics as like a a big orgy: Great fun unless
1) you are paying for it
2) You are hosting it
3) you are cleaning up after.

If you don't fall into one or more of those categories, a good time is guaranteed!

All the serious analysts disagree. The paid civic boosters cherry pick data to make the case but dispassionate analysis paints a different picture:

After the bribery scandal, the Salt Lake Organizing Committee lobbied the state and federal government for a bailout. They got $1.3 billion from the federal governemnt alone.

As for Beijing, here is what they are doing with the famous Bird's Nest stadium. Yes, it is being used for Segway rides.

I didn't know the feds reimbursed salt lake. No wonder the deficit is so insanely high. Maybe those heroic people on that Pennsylvania plane on 9/11 should have let that plane hit the capitol. (I know that's a fucked thing to say, but I wouldn't shed a tear for a dead politition. Self serving bastards)

Where exactly would the Olympic stadium be built in DC? There's not a lot of open land...
