The body discovered in Shenandoah National Park on Thursday afternoon is believed to be that of a missing Fairfax County firefighter, Virginia State Police say.

The family of 31-year-old Nicole Mittendorff also says they believe the remains found not far from the trailhead are Mittendorff’s.

The female remains were found at about 2 p.m. by a search team more than a mile from the Whiteoak Canyon Trail parking area, where her car was located last weekend. Mittendorff was reported missing last Friday. Investigators say they found a suicide note inside Mittendorff’s car, but no cause of death has been determined so far.

The park service and the Virginia State Police said that the search for Mittendorff has been suspended and the scene where the remains were found was being processed for evidence. They say no positive identification has been made, but the body has been transported for an autopsy. However, Mittendorf’s family has posted on the Facebook page to help find Nicole.

Mittendorf’s sister, Jennifer Clardy Chalmers, issued the following statement to WTOP:

Our hearts are broken. We believe that Nicole has been found and is finally coming home, however not in the way we anticipated. This is not the positive outcome that we continued to hope and pray for over the past week. It has been a challenging time for everyone and we learned that there is an amazing community spanning the entire globe, full of love and support. It was this community that helped sustain us. We heard from and received assistance from dear old friends, strangers and everyone in between. Thank you to those who took time away from their own families to let us be with ours.

We wish to especially thank the Virginia State Police, National Park Service and the numerous agencies that used every resource at their disposal during our search for Nicole.
We thank everyone for their time, dedication and support in our search to find Nicole and ask that you keep our family in your prayers in the challenging days ahead.

Fairfax County Fire Chief Richard Bowers said in a statement Thursday night that he and his department are “profoundly saddened” by the news.

“I, along with the men and women of the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department, are profoundly saddened to learn that the body found earlier today in the Shenandoah National Park is thought to be that of Firefighter-Paramedic Nicole Mittendorff. As we wait for further information, we continue to extend our thoughts and prayers to Nicole’s friends and family.”

Investigators were reviewing Mittendorff’s cellphone records, hoping to learn where she was and what she was doing before her disappearance. Mittendorff called in sick for work last week Wednesday, the last day her family heard from her. She sent a text message to her father at 10:50 a.m. that day.

The remains were located about 330 yards off the trail in what the park service described as “treacherous rocky terrain.”

The remote area of the park where the search has focused is more than 70 miles from Mittendorff’s Woodbridge home.

Multiple trails and areas of the park have been closed as teams of search crews combed the park by land and air during the past few days. Multiple agencies have been involved in the search, including Fairfax County Fire & Rescue. Mittendorff works for the county agency and is based at a fire station in Burke.

Virginia State Police are searching for a missing Woodbridge, Virginia, woman who hasn’t been seen since Wednesday, though her car was found Saturday — miles away in Shenandoah National Park.

Nicole K. Mittendorff, 31, is a career firefighter and paramedic with the Fairfax County Fire Department. She was reported missing to the police on Friday after she failed to show up for shift changeover Friday morning.

Her 2009 Mini Cooper was found abandoned at around 8 p.m. Saturday in a parking lot in the park in Madison County, Virginia State Police said in a police release Sunday morning.

State police did not immediately respond to a request for comment when reached by phone Sunday.

Mittendorff’s family has said on social media postings that she “is extremely dedicated to her job.”

Her last contact was via text messages about 10:50 a.m. Wednesday, according to a FindNicoleNow Facebook page set up by her loved ones. She is described as a white female with blond hair and green eyes. She is 5-feet, 6-inches tall, and weighs approximately 125 pounds.

State police and U.S. Park Police spent Saturday night searching by ground and air for her whereabouts, and efforts continued into Sunday, according to the release.

Anyone with information is asked to call Virginia State Police at 703-803-0026 or #77 on a cell phone, or call 911 or send an email to questions@vsp.virginia.gov

Hopefully she just got lost hiking and is ok. Unfortunately knowing Woodbridge she was probably abducted at gunpoint. This reminds me of that MS-13 case awhile back. I hope they find her alive but this reeks of a bad ending.

I hope they find her safe soon. The details that are emerging sound very worrying.

I can't imagine a young woman choosing to go on a remote trail like that without even letting her husband know where she was going. I guess it's possible that she didn't mention it because she didn't want to be nagged about it.

I do hope they find her safe soon. Praying for her family.

I read where her car was found at White Oak Canyon. Used to hike there and it's well traveled. I did venture off one day on a fire trail and encountered a couple bears. There have also been mountain lion sightings in the area

Really? Read the Post?

A car belonging to a missing 31-year-old Woodbridge woman was found in a remote area of the Shenandoah National Park over the weekend, but the search continues for the avid runner and tri-athlete who family members said might have been in the park to use a running trail.

Virginia State Police discovered Nicole K. Mittendorff’s 2009 Mini Cooper parked near the White Oak Canyon Trail — close to Old Rag — on Saturday night, said Corinne Geller, a spokeswoman for the state police. But there has been no other sign of Mittendorff since the middle of last week. Family members reported Mittendorff missing Friday after she didn’t show up for a morning shift at her job, which was highly unusual for her.

The family wants all available resources used to find her.
The best way to accomplish this is to suggest that she was somehow abducted or harmed.

If she wasn't a FC firefighter nobody would be out looking for her except her family.

Sucks that she gets special treatment while teenage girls go missing all the time without these resources.

White oak is well visited and IMO not remote
Not the best place in snp to ditch a body

Very strange police don't want volunteers because it might "contaminate an area." Never heard of that one. Sounds like police know something they are not telling.

Why would anyone click the "Like" button on facebook for this?

Does it spread the word to others? What use is it to click "Like"?

Clicking like would say you want her to be found and for others to be aware of the situation

I get the idea, but besides some lazy way to say "you want her to be found". what does it do? Does it forward the info to others, create awareness somehow?

Seems weird to "Like" that a person is missing or that people are trying to find her.

Just seems so self-absorbed to click "Like", like it is now some social necessity.

I "Like" that we need to search for a missing person or I "Like" that people are searching for a missing person.

I think the whole clicking "Like" on things is childish as is, but if there is a setting to turn off the "Likes", seems situations like this one are where it is needed.

They say her last texts were at 1050 on the 13th of April, and have her missing at 1100, 13 April.

WHAT WAS SHE TEXTING AT 1050? was she in distress? Was it just a normal text? Where was she at 1050 when she was texting? Cell towers would ping near that location.

I pray they find her alive and well. If they decide they need volunteers to help search, I am sure many people will do whatever they can to help her and her family...pray.

Don't they (missing adults) generally have to be missing for a certain amount of time before the police get involved? That might explain why it took a couple of days for her to be reported missing..

http://www.foxnews.com/us/2016/04/18/search-on-for-missing-virginia-woman-after-abandoned-car-found-at-national-park.html

Authorities in Virginia are searching for a missing woman whose abandoned car was found in Shenandoah National Park over the weekend.

Nicole Mittendorff, 31, of Woodbridge, Va., was reported missing on Friday, two days after her last contact with her family. Her 2009 Mini Cooper was found Saturday evening in a parking lot located in a remote area of the park.

Virginia State Police and U.S. Park Police suspended the ground and air search for Mittendorff Sunday evening after a second day without success. Operations will resume Monday morning.

Police say Mittendorff's disappearance is not considered suspicious at this time.

Family members told The Washington Post that they reported Mittendorff missing after she failed to show up for her scheduled shift as a Fairfax County Fire and Rescue first responder, an action they described as highly unusual.

"We are holding up as best as can be expected under difficult circumstances,” Mittendorff's sister, Jennifer Chalmers, told the Post Sunday. “At this time we are focused on finding Nicole and have the deepest appreciation for everyone helping. We hope and pray for a safe resolution in the near future."

The Post reported that Mittendorff's family members have speculated that she had traveled to Shenandoah National Park to train for a race. A Facebook page created to solicit tips and provide updates on the search noted that Mittendorff "likes to compete in multi-sport events such as triathlons and regularly runs half marathons [and] can often be found riding and running on trails."

Mittendoff stands five feet, six inches tall and has blonde hair and green eyes. Anyone with information about her whereabouts is asked to call Virginia State Police at (703) 803-0026 or email questions@vsp.virginia.gov

Authorities are seeking clues in the disappearance of Katelin Akens, a 19-year-old woman who vanished en route to a Virginia airport, leaving her fiancée and family with no idea of her fate.

“It bothers everybody,” Spotsylvania County Sheriff’s Office Captain Jeff Pearce told The Huffington Post. “We just want to know what happened.”

According to the sheriff’s office, Akens’ stepfather was driving her to Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport on Dec. 5, when the teen asked to be dropped off at the Springfield mall. She reportedly planned to take the metro from the Franconia-Springfield stop near the mall to the airport.

Later that day, Akens’ mother received a text message from her daughter.

“She texted and said she made it there, but we don’t know if that’s true,” her mother, Lisa Sullivan, told Richmond’s WTVR?TV.

Akens’ fiancée, Amber Rios, had been living with Akens since 2014 in Arizona. Rios also reportedly received a text message from Akens saying something came up and she was not returning that day.

“She flew out there on the first and she was supposed to come back here on the fifth,” Rios told Richmond’s WWBT News. “Her sister just had a baby, so she was going out there to meet her nephew.”

Akens never boarded her flight in Virginia, and investigators have been unable to confirm the teen was ever at the mall, as the area where her stepfather said he dropped her off is reportedly not covered by surveillance cameras. Authorities also have yet to determine if the teen ever made it to the metro or to the airport.

Pearce described Akens’ stepfather as “absolutely” cooperative in the investigation and said he is not considered a suspect or person of interest in his stepdaughter’s disappearance.

Two days after Akens disappeared, her luggage was found discarded in a drainage ditch in Spotsylvania County near the Fredericksburg city limit, which is roughly 50 miles from the airport. The teen’s wallet, identification and phone charger were reportedly among the items found in her unopened luggage container.

“It’s scary,” Sullivan told Richmond’s WRIC?TV after the discovery. “You don’t know what to think. Where is she?”

Police say they have no tangible clues to Akens’ whereabouts, and they will not speculate as to what might have happened to her.

“We have absolutely no indication at this point if anything happened, and if it did, what or where it happened,” Pearce told HuffPost.

Pearce also declined to say if Akens’ Facebook page, which authorities accessed after obtaining a warrant for it, revealed any clues.

The affidavit for the search warrant has been sealed by a judge, according to The Free Lance-Star.

“The information deputies and the detectives have uncovered is not something we’re going to be able to release at this point,” Pearce said.

For now, there appear to be more questions than answers in the teen’s mysterious disappearance.

“At some point I’m sure we will have an answer, but we just don’t have any indication at this point,” Pearce said. “We do still have an active open case on it and a detective that is assigned to it. Every week he’s trying to find some new way of seeing if we can identify where she might be. A lot of it is going to depend on folks coming forward and giving us tips and clues.”

Katelin Akens is described as 5 feet, 4 inches tall and 122 pounds, with blond hair and blue eyes. She has butterflies tattooed on her left forearm and stars on her right foot.

Anyone with information about her disappearance is asked to contact the Spotsylvania County Sheriff’s Office at 540-582-7115 or Spotsylvania Crime Solvers at 1-800-928-5822. For more information, visit Help find Katelin Akens on Facebook.

There's something very odd about this. Hikers don't get lost in the SNP and the area is heavily traveled. Especially last weekend when the temps were in the 70's.

Does the Manassas girl have blonde hair and similar build to the other 2 girls with blonde hair?

Could be related, but the last seen locations are quite spread out for that to be probable.

She wasn't reported missing because she wasn't due to work until Friday. When she didn't show on Friday, her family was called and she was reported missing.

How did her husband not know she was missing for most of Wednesday and all of Thursday. I'd notice if my wife was gone for that long. I might not complain about it, but I'd notice it.

It says she last texted at 10am Wednesday and that was the last contact? So he didn't notice her missing until Friday when she didn't report for work?

Are we missing something here? Police don't want any volunteers to help in the search because it might "contaminate the area?"

And yes, they have bloodhounds searching for her, the scent is being tracked. Volunteers would contaminate that.

They have helicopter since she lost on the mountian and national park. This is standard typical protocol when someone gets lost in an isolated area

If anything the White Oak Canyon parking lot probably has less ranger-attention. Someone on here was saying they would park there to avoid the fee at the Old Rag main lot.

Maybe they are not looked for them because they could be illegal aliens that don't pay taxes and public services are not intended for someone like that.

White Oak Canyon Trail (WOCT) is pretty steep with many rocks and tree roots providing tripping opportunities, if I remember correctly. I sure would not want to be jogging on something like that. Of course, I've seen joggers on other trails that provided similar trip hazards.

WOCT has a parking lot off Skyline Drive and another parking lot near the bottom of the trail, close to the Old Rag parking lot. Apparently the lower lot is where they found the car. You can see topography here: http://www.hikingupward.com/SNP/WhiteOak/

One local news station showed a photo of the woman with her big dog in the back of her car. Would she take the dog with her for running on a tough trail? I wouldn't think so.

It's been years since a friend and I backpacked from Skyland parking lot (WOCT lot on Skyline Dr was full) down the WOCT and up the Cedar Run Trail, similar to this hike
http://www.hikingupward.com/SNP/WhiteOakCedarRun/

When we did that hike in an August years ago, there were few people once you got a mile or two from Skyline Dr. I think we hiked for a full day (in the lower part of the trails) without seeing anyone, but maybe we saw 1 or 2 other hikers or groups. With full packs and a lot of blisters, we took an easy pace.

Hope they will find her in good condition with a twisted ankle or similar minor injury, but they need to find her soon for a good outcome in this.
