No voting allowed!

We had over a year to ask what you wanted and decided we would not like the answer, so we didn't attempt any meaningful survey or vote.

This is NOT about what the voters, students, teachers, parents want.

It's about what a small group of well-organized but misguided advocates want to do despite the $4 million dollar cost.

Direct democracy is among the worst of all possible forms of government.

The Whiners whined BEFORE the start times were changed, now they whine BECAUSE the start times were changed. Whatever the policy is, it must be awful. Go back to Dogpatch, you boneheads.

We are a republic based on principles of representative democracy precisely because the founders so well understood the dangers inherent in allowing the rabble too close to government. They went to great lengths to insulate the new government from the negative influences of yahoos, goobers, hicks, and hayseeds. They well understood how easily the small minds of those folks could be manipulated by tricksters, charlatans, and silver-tongued demagogues. They wanted no part of that at all.

So, does that mean we can vote the current school board out?

Yes, once every four years you get to cast your lone ballot. Last time you went what, 2-10? Freaking over-stuffed goobers.

I've been fighting this for close to a decade. My last kid is graduating from high school in June. It is someone else's fight now.

Not sure where I stand on this issue.

I think FCPS should have run a pilot program with one or a few High Schools to see how this would work out. Then implement or tweak the schedule as needed.

I know other area schools have done this, but many had far fewer schools and it was much easier to do. Also not clear if FCPS even spoke to other localities on how this worked out and if there were any issues.

But again, damn the torpedoes, full steam ahead!

All I know is Im tired of waking up at night then waking my kid up at astronomical twilight to go to school. In 6 days we will both be waking up at night (he gets up at 6:00am). How does it make sense? Even after the rollback of Daylight Savings Time he will still be waking up before sunrise.

Its stupid and unfair to our kids.

Please! The thing had been looked at six ways from Sunday. There was no more to know about it. The change was made because it put a sock in the decade-long yapping of loud-mouth bird-brainers and didn't cost very much money to implement.

Winter-swim kids have to be "on the deck" at 5:00 am at some pool somewhere. Hockey clubs and teams get ice time starting at 4:30 am for practices. You and your kids are freaking pikers.

NO! It seems so crazy to change the start time and spend money on busses when they claim there is no money to give raises to the teachers.

Kids would get more sleep if there was less homework and shorter school hours.

Maybe so. They are amazing students though, best of the best. All those kids waking up at 345 am to play hockey will be working for my kids in 15 years. If you are a parent and choose to get your kid up at 3 or 4 in the morning that is fine with me but dont expect me to believe you or your kids are somehow better than anyone else. We are up at 6 am and I can see exactly how many lights are on - not many.

Adults that get to choose where to work generally dont get up at 4, 5 or even 6 am. If this is some kind of contest as to which person can be the most sleep deprived, you win. Young adults with a high IQ tend to stay up later. The higher the IQ the later they stay up.

Your kids waking up at 4 and 5 am to participate in sports are probably not morons but they arent as smart as my kids - we need sleep for our brains. Its okay the world needs ditch diggers too...

Lack of up-and-at-'em ambition is not apt to serve them as well as you expect.

Well, I'm certainly glad to hear that! I was beginning to fear dire consequences in the event of disapproval from some internet fruitcake.

> ...but dont expect me to believe you or your kids

Not claimed. But your sleep-in-at-all-costs tendencies are markers for general sluggishness. Sluggishness is not how one gets ahead in the world. The early bird has always gotten the worm, and he or she will continue to do so.

> We are up at 6 am and I can see exactly how many lights

Yeah, I suspected not many lights on when I started reading your posts.

> Adults that get to choose where to work generally

You don't hang with the same adults that I do then.

> If this is some kind of contest as to which person can

You don't know sleep. It occurs in cycles that vary from one person to the next, but typically last around three hours. An ordinary and otherwise healthy adult can do fine in the long run on a single such cycle per night.

> Young adults with a high IQ tend to stay up later.
> The higher the IQ the later they stay up.

So the smart kids know that they don't need all these hours and hours of sleep and that by sleeping the day away, they are actually just wasting time that could have been put to other and more productive purposes? Good on them!

It sounds like your kids will turn out to be pampered soft-asses. The harder-nosed kids will just beat the tar out of them at some point. But I suppose they will at least be well-rested when it happens.
