But after 60 years of driving on the roads of Delhi, Rajesh Singh Gupta has yet to acclimate himself to driving here in America. In India, slower traffic travels in the far left lane. Not only that, but he's going to make a left about 20 miles ahead, so he's just getting prepared to turn.

The reason people in this area don't follow the rules is for two reasons:

I would mostly agree with this, but Virginia has a couple roads were the right lane becomes turn only WITHOUT an exit lane. So the only sane thing to do is avoid the side of the road that might suddenly exit when you are reading your phone.

So when you come roaring up at 15mph above and hit me or someone else when swerving around me, then actually the law denotes you as being the liable party for the accident, and you will be the one coughing up the doh, facing any other legal repercussions if I am going at or below the speed limit. Legally speaking, it can't be made illegal nor can one be found culpable for NOT breaking the law dumbass.
On the other hand, if I am going below the speed limit and you come in at speed limit, on a highway I would point out, not a local road, then you have a case because when the passing vehicle has right of way you must allow them to overtake you. It was taught in drivers ed that the left lane is used for emergency vehicles and passing; slower traffic move right. To the poster who purposely moves into the left lane to create a road block - I wouldn't purposely move into the left lane to create a road block if I were you, these days you might be putting your life at risk from those folks having a very bad day and carrying a gun. Frank, you are writing for another day or another locale where drivers are more civilized.
Reasonable drivers don't camp out in the left lane of a three or more lane limited access highway, preventing those travelling slightly faster from proceeding. OTOH reasonable drivers also aren't assholes who expect to be able to drive 15-20 mph above the posted speed limit or the prevailing rate of traffic. When you get to a busier two lane limited access highways you will find more people primarily driving in the left lane, because they don't want to have to deal with people in the right lane entering or exiting the highway. Nothing wrong with that, but you do need to check your mirror from time to time to make sure you aren't backing up traffic.
When you move away from limited access highways the expectations become murkier. There is usually too much traffic entering and leaving the road to the left and the roads are frequently at too close to capacity for there to be an expectation that the left lane be used for passing.

Can you people just chill and show some consideration? The only time I drive on the left is to make a left hand turn. But I get over early because I'm an extremely nervous driver and want to make sure I can move over in time. If you tail someone like me or are aggressive, you are putting yourself at risk.

When merging into a fast road off a left side ramp onto the beltway's left most lane, have you ever tried to move right across 4 lanes of traffic in 1/2 mile to get off on a nearby right-hand exit? Why is it that no one lets left side merge-ins space to jump lanes to GET TO the slower lanes? If you are one of those refusing to let a slower merging-in vehicle into your lane so they CAN get out of yours and every one's way, then you have no reasons to get on here and bitch. Although you are a-1 right about the ones who DO NOT TRY to get over upon finding themselves in a "giant supercollider" type lane due to road engineering and physiography. There ought to be a law against left hand merge-ins if this is causing so many traffic issues.

Yes, the left lane is either for cars traveling well above the posted speed limit or cars that want to pass at speeds in excess of the posted limit.
Having said that though I must make it clear that by law anyone driving above the limit is guilty of speeding and certainly takes their own risk of getting a ticket.
People who want to use the left lane for passing should never pass at a slower speed than the fastest car in the left lane!
How dare the self righteous speed police citizens take it upon themselves to take away the "at one's own risk speeding" by people who are on a mission and don't have time observe the ridiculously low legal speed limits!

I love driving 55 in the left lane on the beltway. What really ticks them off is when I roll down my window and tap on my roof to the sounds of some great tunes. I don't own cable, so I have to entertain myself somehow.

In urban environments (read: NON-AUTOBAHN, NON-INTERSTATES) GOING THROUGH CITIES ETC, THERE IS A SPEED LIMIT IN ALL LANES OF THE ROAD. PEOPLE WHO HAVE TO MAKE LEFT TURNS IF AND WHEN THEY DON'T KNOW THE AREA WELL ENOUGH TO FORESEE THE TURNING POINTS AHEAD OF TIME, ESPECIALLY WHEN ASSHOLES LIKE YOU TAKE PLEASURE IN PREVENTING THEM TO MOVE OVER 3 LANES OF BUMPER TO BUMPER TRAFFIC WON'T LET THEM IN IN TIME TO MAKE THE TURN, THOSE PEOPLE IF THINKING AHEAD WILL GET INTO THE LANE THEY NEED TO TURN FROM WELL AHEAD OF TIME.
