It seems to me from listening (however I quit a while ago) that it was quickly clear it was a fatality (hence no sirens/not a rescue effort), happened behind the Kohls area but b/c it was an Amtrak going eastbound (probably fast) and they don't have a planned stop at Burke Centre VRE, they stopped at Burke Station where someone (not the conductor) had an anxiety attack (not a heart attack).

They also made mention to the dispatcher to be on the lookout for a call from someone reporting a teen missing in the area and later got a call from dispatch that seemed to be what they were waiting for but asked to take that info offline (by phone or text). Now the news has arrived.

Either way, a pretty terrible day for a bunch of people.

Not a funny situation but I did laugh at that lol

In that area, yeah, it wouldn't be so crazy for people to cross in the day. There are paths all over and people cross all the time for lots of reasons. The girl that was hit near target a while back was going over a path that I've pushed a stroller over. It's a 100 yard cut through from the VRE to the target or by road, almost a mile walk. So I know it's trespassing but it's not terribly difficult to do it safely during the day. At night in the other hand, I'd call it unusual.

And yeah, I hope it's not this girl and am personally hoping its a 99 year old hobo, the leader of isis or maybe even...it is the guy a couple posts up.

I happened to be right in that area when the rescue team was coming. There were several firetrucks, a couple of ambulances and several police cars, plus a helicopter overhead. they were at the dead end of sideburn near bonnie brae elementary school. it was pretty crazy and obviously tragic. gosh i pray it isn't the young girl you are talking about. her family has had enough tragedy. she lives near me as well.

I agree that it seems like headphones wouldn't block out the rumble of an train, but the evidence doesn't seem to bear that out. A quick google search showed 4 teen deaths by train just this year so far on the first page of results.

Its the truth. I hated HS for the most part. I survived more than anything. I had a great time in College like night and day. Definitely hang in there and dont buy the bs about HS being all that. This is a tragic accident. She probably never heard the train coming. Trains should have some sort of warning device to let people know they're approaching. Maybe a horn or something. Oh well, at least there was no gun involved, or someone could've gotten hurt!

I haven't talked to her since 1st grade, and I remember her being kind of mean to me, but for some reason this just messed me up. It could have been one of my friends, too. It could have been any one of the people I love, who just one day up and decided to walk in front of a train. The one thing I think that anyone who hears about this can learn is that you need to think about all those things you need to do in life but think you'll never get around to doing, and do them. I wish I could 'Wonderful Life' kids and show them how valuable they truly are to the people around them and people they will meet in the future -- it's something most won't understand because they temporarily inhabit a world that is ruled by competition, artificial barriers, facades, etc. That changes, rapidly.

As someone who lost their mother too soon -- although not quite as young as Brooke -- it hurts me to think about the pain that caused her. Dealing with that just plain sucks and you have to just remember that your Mom would want you to 1) try to make the most of the time you have and 2) hopefully you'll meet again in a place far better than this. I was on the train on my way home after months away from my family.When the accident happened and all the lights went out, no one on the train knew what happened even the crew members. As the very, very limited information trickled through the cars, The police began walk up and down the outside of the train with flashlights as it was pitch black, even using some from the train itself. you could see the concern in everyone as the crew ran up and down trying to find out the answers themselves and keep everyone calm. One crew member was extremely shaken up and taken care of by the Fire/EMS. As the few of us started to find what we could on our phones we where told it was a crime scene and we could not move. After sometime we where told there was an accident and a fatality my heart sank. As time went on details began to emerge(this site being one of the first I could find on my phone). There will always be questions but I know I will never forget that night.I Wish that what ever led her to be there on that night that her heart reaches a state of peace and that her family remembers all the good things that she has done and the good memories

I'm in her grade. Well was. Anyway, I never really was close to her. I was on the football and basketball team and she was in Orchestra so we never really crossed paths. She dated this guy in my gym class they both seemed pretty fine. They went on a "break" with each other like any other high school bullshit relationship. Any way, this other girl called her a slut cause Brooke was wearing shorts that had her ass hanging out or whatever. Typical girl conflict in high school or whatever. The thing was she wasn't even slurry and her friends weren't even remotely close to that either. Anyway I don't think it's the girls fault that called her slutty. I can't really speculate but her best friend said they hung out the day the tragedy happend and she seemed apparently fine and happy. She either was extremely depressed and did a good job hiding it, or was on some drug. She said she was going to run away that night according to her friend but I guess she had other thoughts . this marks the 11th teen suicide in Fairfax County this past year. Isn't that fucking amazing. And the school board and government don't give a shit and won't even ask us students why we drink, smoke, self harm in some cases. They all need a reality check.

You realize my generation is the most pushed and the most demanded of as far as education right. You do realize getting a b is equivalent to getting a d now right If you even want to get into a decent college. To get into uva you need a 4.3 GPA at the least. On top of all that were expected to maintain perfect grades have a social life, participate in extracurricular activities and still function properly. We fucking work more hours than any of you

for any high school student reading this - PLEASE - take a moment and take a deep breath. You HAVE to realize that your 'world' right now in high school is NOT the real world. There are plenty of great colleges that you can attend. and honestly - if you can somehow try to accept the fact that you can ignore a lot of the needless stress that you allow in your life (like social media), you will be much happier. It is possible to be a teenager today and NOT become so obsessed with social media -I know teens who ignore social media and they are MUCH happier. And as far as being stressed because a teacher gives you a 12 page packed to complete - adjust your priorities a bit. You are a student in high school - they are going to give you work to do. Spend less time on Twitter/Instagram/Snapchat/ETC and more time focusing on higher priorities. because the bottom line is no matter how much 'your generation' complains about stress, no one is going to give you a gold star and/or a pass and/or even a pat on the back. Life is hard - get used to it and start working on developing some coping skills.

Well said, honestly. I'm at least 20 years your senior and high school sucked...and I don't think I felt this pressure. Rest assured, it gets better. Someone echoed earlier something my mom once told me when I was 16 and told her I thought high school was supposed to be the best years of my life...so why does it suck? She said, oh no, that's college and then it's better in different ways after that. I appreciate this perspective and even though I hate the shit out of you at 7-11 or on the roads, hang in there!
