is it possible to get your street name changed?
There are only 7 houses on the street 6 of us
have expressed interest.
How big of a deal is this? Does the county and
or the post office have to approve?

Of course you can. Contact your County Supervisor and ask for the forms, then get your neighbors to sign off and present to the Board for approval.
The process can take upwards to 6 months, but if you and ALL your neighbors want it, it should slide through without a problem.

What ever happend to Horsepen Rd in Herndon? I was out there 7 or 8 years ago and a crafty prankster had added a font and color perfect "IS" to the end of pen. A few years later I was out there and lookd for it again, I think they changed the name to be a continuation of Sunrise Valley Drive.

My favorite local street name is Short Ct. at the intersection of Blake Lane and Sutton. It is a stupid little parking lot for the 4 townhouses at the corner.

I wonder if map makers controlled approval of mapping changes, as you imply, if roads would ever be built or modified. Laughing at the thought of a city planner having to submit application for approval of changes to Google or Tele Atlas or whatever.
