Why so many Steelers fans?
Posted by: Lobo Alumnus ()
Date: October 01, 2014 10:17AM

The other day I was at a sports bar and I noticed a bunch of Steelers fans. It wasn't at the bar either, seems like they're everywhere nowadays. So either the fans in the area are a bunch of fickle frontrunners or people from SW Pennsylvania are coming here in droves.

I leaning toward the latter.

It's simple, we are the best team with the largest fanbase in the country. We practically built the NFL.

You are correct. Many ex-Pittsburgers moved down here after the steel mill closures and such. Myself included, there are also many younger generations that have moved down here for/after college for the work experience. The town is sports-crazed and it carries over no matter where you move!

I moved from Pittsburgh to DC almost 30 years ago, but never lost my love for the Stillers. Pittsburgh is 4 hours away and many of us moved to DC back in the 80's and 90's because the economy sucked back home! We might of left the city, but the city never left us.

If the Steelers aren't relevant, what does that make the Redskins?

Baltimore is an hour away, less than Pittsburgh obviousely. Even though the Steelers have not done so hot the past few seasons, you still have the leftover bandwagoners from their glory days who don't know what to do with themselves yet. If Pittsburgh keeps on sucking, that'll change eventually.

Yep agree steelers fan still think it is the 1970s, cannot get real that they do not matter anymore. Also find it funny/sick how they all have couches, underwear, dog leashes, etc. that say Steelers. Get a life kids. I root passionately for my team enjoy their wins (and they have won superbowls) don't die if they lose but you will not see me parading around with my team's paraphernalia like a fucking nine year old. Grow up losers.

Here's your answer, copied from another thread:

Ever wonder why there are so many Steelers fans in Nova?

Its because western PA is a dilapidated, backward shithole with absolutely no jobs or opportunity. So they come here, lucky us.

I'm sure your family evolved (barely) from the marshy swampland in DC and never migrated anywhere in the history of your family line segment (Note: you have to marry outside your bloodline to have a branch on your family tree.)

Probably a Browns fan from Ohio.

Is "Browns" racist?

Could be the 6 Super Bowls they've won, or the 8 they've played in. Could be the massive amount of Steelers that have gone to the HOF. Could be the stability of the organization. However, the practical reason is that there are no jobs at home so we had to move. But, no true Steeler fan would ever embrace the Ravens that's nuts. They may be down now, but they will rebound...I guarantee that they will be back in the Super Bowl long before the Redskins.

Love 'em or hate 'em, the Steelers are a legacy and a dynasty. IF you grew up in the 70's they were the ones who were always on channel 9 here.

There are places in Western MD where they are huge, also a shit load of Pittsburgh fans up in Baltimore too, which is funny because the rivalry is almost on par with the Browns.

Yep, they're up here alright. There are certain bars they avoid for easy to guess reasons, but I usually see at least a few every time I'm out to have a cold one and watch the game. They are mostly obnoxious and insanely rude, especially if they know you're a Bmore fan. I wear my black and purple, but I never say anything to them. Nothing negative anyway. Yet just because I like who I like, that automatically makes me a bad person and deserving of the verbal attacks? There may be a fair amount of them here, but it's still Baltimore; the fan base will always be mostly Ravens. They could have a little respect, they wouldn't like it if we pulled that crap in their home town.

Anyway, their reign is ending. No one can stay on top forever. Just ask Dallas.

Redskins fans hate us Steelers fans because our team does not treat its fans like garbage and try to extract every cent they have.

!. Training camp is FREE.
2. Getting to the game and leaving afterwards is EASY. I can leave Annandale and be at the parking garage in four hours.
3. The metro to the games is FREE.
4. The Steelers are not owned by Dan Snyder.

...And this is why Steelers fans in this area suck. You want to cheer for the team that represents your family's ancestral homeland of Western Pa? Knock yourself out. There are a lot of people in DC/Nova - and many are transplants - so it's an area in which it is reasonably acceptable to root for a team other than the home team without automically being labelled a d-bag. But, for the Steelers fans here, that's not enough, they love to attack the home team and its fans. This thread is a perfect example. NOT ONE person on this thread said they were a Redskin fan and a guy - named "Who said I was a Skins fan" - bashed the Skins along with the Steelers, yet about ten different Steeler fans start in on the Redskins. The Redskins and Steelers play once every 4 years and have never met in a SB, so why the need to attack them? They shouldn't matter to a real Steeler fan. If the numerous Red Sox fans in the area were insulting the Nats and their fans, any reasonable person would say: "What a bag of dix those guys are!"...And so that is what you Steeler fans in this area look like when you constantly attack, as Phil Simms would say, "The Washington football team".

The biggest reason is the team’s long history of success. Travel across the US and you will see Steeler fans everywhere.

Its also due to Yinzers refusing welfare and going to where they could find work and be productive citizens. Before you rag on Pittsburgh just remember that the entire local economy is based on taxes paid by everyone else in the country.

Steeler fans would like their QB to be less rapey but by and large the ownership runs one of the more responsible, fan friendly teams in sports.

Why is this team named the "Washington Redskins"???

Team headquarters is in Ashburn, VA.
Training camp was held in Richmond, VA.
FedEx Field is in Landover, MD.

Steelers fans do this wherever they are, not just here in Nova.

It is odd that a franchise with such a rich tradition and history of success would have such insecure fans. Its like their entire fanbase has "little dog syndrome" and they feel like they have to constantly attack other franchises to prove their "dominance". I kinda feel sorry for them.

It used to be that the Steelers used to eb a stand-up organization, but that has cahnged over the last decade with Dan Rooney running things. It used to be if you fucked up, you were gone. TE Eric Green busted for coke, let go and picked up by the Ravens. RB Bam morris caught with a bunch of pounds of pot in the trunk of his car, canned and picked up by the Ravens. They cut bait quickly.

Now they keep the good players and can the ones that aren't starter. Look at the 2 running backs that are playing this year. Get bustered for pot and miss the team plane to a preseason game in Philly. Coach says "they paid the price by having to drive across the state to make the game and we made them run a lot.." These days, they are no better than any other team in the leagaue in regards to players getting in trouble wiht the law.

As I said the Steelers are completely irrelevant - behind against the Texans at home - give me a break, what a loser team

The real question is who still follows football anymore? I left that shitty sport at the door in my 30s when I realized I was rooting for a bunch of entitled punks in their 20s. The explosion of free agency and bloated contracts killed football. It's unwatchable. I'd rather watch paint dry because at least paint has some character and isn't a watered-down product of its former self.

LOL. I was thinking the same thing. I have no issues w/ the Steelers. My question is...why the fuck does everyone from Pittsburgh decide to move to DC? You Pitt fucks can't find jobs in Philly, NY, or anywhere else???

Steelers are irrelevant...destined to be a wanna be playoff team or worse that does not make any further noise with the big 10 or so teams come the playoffs. Sorry, now go back and tell yourselves how important the Steelers are because of their dominance in the 70s.
