I am looking to purchase a firearm for open carry. I heard this is legal in this county and I would like to exercise my 2nd amendment rights. What is the best handgun to get to carry openly? I would like to carry on my right hip. Also, any recommendations for a nice, comfortable holster would be great!

Not a coward. Just one of my friends said it is my right to carry a firearm and asked why I wasn't exercising my rights. I didn't have a good answer, so I decided to look into buying a handgun.

I have looked at Sig Sauer and also H&K in a few calibers. Oh, and someone told me a 1911 is good to carry (cocked and locked - condition 1). Any good recommendations? Also, I would like to know what kind of holster to get to open carry on my right hip. I like leather, but I have heard that kydex is good, but it may mar the finish on some firearms.

I like my Kimber Micro 9. As far as holsters go, I'd recommend going to Cabella's
in Gainesville and choosing one that suits you best. BTW, the open carry laws cover
the entire state of Virginia and not just Fairfax.

For open carry, I recommend a full-size automatic. Since you are open carrying, no need for a compact or sub-compact. You will want something with as much stopping power as you can manage. Personally, I like to carry my cold government 1911 in condition one. I have a custom leather holster that fits me well (was made by a friend in Arizona). Condition one means a round chambered with the hammer back and safety on.

I also carry a second magazine (please don't call them clips, by the way) on my belt on the left side.

But choosing a firearm, especially a handgun, is a very personal decision. I recommend you talk to some people at your local range and fire and test carry as many sidearms as possible before making your choice.

Exactly. I always feel like I could control any situation that may arise when I am carrying. I prefer to carry openly because concealed carry adds too much to my already ample waistline. Although I always carry at least one back-up handgun in a small holster on my right leg. Sometimes I will carry a small Kahr 9mm in my pocket as a second back-up. I, too like the Sig Sauer P220 in .45. Extra magazines, too. At least three.

I feel that you can never be too prepared.
