GoFundMe: FCPD Shot My Dog

On Tuesday, September 16, 2014 my nephew puppy King was shot by fairfax county police during an arrest.

The dog was inside when the suspect surrendered himself to the police, the door was then left open by the officers allowing King to wander into the street. He was barking at all the commotion, not aggressively going towards any of the officers or the K-9 unit dogs. The suspect pleaded with the officers over and over to let him put the dog inside, but they refused.

Not a single officer tried to grab the dog or let him back into the house, the officer chose to fire his weapon through his right nasal passage, through his hard palate and tongue, exiting through his neck. Witnesses stated that the year old pitbull was doing nothing wrong, simply waking around in the road and police shot him.

King is currently being treated in an emergency hospital receiving blood transfusion and in the need of surgery to stop the bleeding.

Any little donation would help!

Please share Kings story, the police brutality against not only bully breeds but canines in general has got to stop. Justice needs to be served and the police need to be punished just as any other civilian would be. Just because you are the law, does not mean that this is okay.

The Sheriff's office had nothing to do with your dog getting shot. That would be the Fairfax County Police and Chief Edwin C. Roessler Jr.

Without vouchng for the accuracy of the original post in terms of how the dog got out, I hope the dog recovers.

Still, police officers go willingly into harm's way for our safety and we should back them when they take reasonable measures to maintain their own safety.

Below is FCPD posting on the incident from: http://fcpdnews.wordpress.com/2014/09/17/robbery-suspect-arrested-domestic-dog-shot/

Sept 17 post: Robbery Suspect Arrested, Domestic Dog Shot

Around 9:15 p.m. on Tuesday, September 16, a 20-year man was in a parked car with several other individuals in the 11500 block of Fairfax Station Road. Someone in the car displayed a handgun and took money and property from the victim. The victim then exited the car and the suspects drove away. The victim then contacted police. There were no injuries.

Following investigative leads, police located a suspect in this robbery at a residence in the 4100 block of Morrisons Way. The suspect was contacted by phone and he came outside to surrender. While placing the suspect in custody a pit bull dog exited the house and charged the officers. One of the officers then shot the dog. After completing the arrest, officers were able to contain the wounded dog and transport it to a local veterinarian clinic. The dog is expected to recover.

This case remains under active investigation at this time.

Very upset that the police didn't shoot both OP and nephew. Getting rid of two dirtbags would've helped clean up the area.

I contacted FCPD on this and they directed me towards Fairfax County's Risk Management Division, so I've shot an E-mail off to Teri Flynn, the county's risk manager.

This rumor sounds like it's not true, though.

A detailed discussion of the law regarding the police shooting pets can be found at https://www.animallaw.info/article/detailed-discussion-police-shooting-pets.

From what I read, the officer can probably raise the defense of qualified immunity, saying that he was acting under color of law.

Regardless, the legal costs in pursuing a lawsuit against the county, which has a roomful of lawyers they can marshal, would far exceed any amount that could be recovered.

Maybe FCPD should borrow some of MPD's body cameras. Other than sorting things out, it might have the affect of calming them down. We still don't have all the details on the David Masters shooting and that was five years ago.
