When only criminals are armed and law enforcement backs off, what do you expect? Mexico, Chicago, etc.

I don't own a gun, but I think I'm safer when criminals have to guess who has one and who doesn't.

I started all my kids at 5 or 6 learning gun safty, and marksmanship. I am military trained with firearms. I also have taken many safty and handling classes over the years and go to the range regularly.
Two of my grown kids have guns, two do not. Neither is right or wrong. It's a personal choice that I respect. No pressure from dad.
But I will relay an incident that makes the point. When my oldest son was in 10th grade, he was at a party, and someone produced a hand gun. He immediately left. He came home and told me what happened. This is what I trained them to do.
When we arrived at the house in question, police were on the scene. Someone had shot a hole in the ceiling. No one was hurt. My son was tge only one that didn't get in trouble.
A close call by an undisciplined and or untrained teenager. Also the fault of the gun owner having an unsecured weapon.
The point for liberals would be bad gun. More control. My point is bad behavior. More responsible gun ownership and gun control by the handler.
We like to think that if guns are banned, our children will be safer. The truth is that none of us live in a bubble.
For a group that prides itself on education, they sure like to take the path of ignorance when it comes to anything that scares them like firearms.
I have two nephews that have issues with self control. I do not let them near any weapons. It's not something that I feel is in anyone's best interest. But I don't let them drive my ATV, or use my chainsaw or other potentially dangerous items either.
The mother of the shooter at sandy hook was a fool. She was to blame for this, not the firearms her son gained access to.
She made a foolish choice that cost her and many other people everything.

A short list of safety rules my family lives by for those that are not knowledgeable and are interested.

1. Every gun is loaded unless you verify at that moment it isn't. The safety is always disengaged uless verified.
2. Never point a gun at anything you dont intend to shoot.
3. Never put your finger on the trigger unless you intend to shoot. Never shoot unless you know whats down range.
4. Never handle a weapon you don't understand unless you have a qualified person with you that does.
5. If someone unqualified or unlawfully produces a gun, leave. Don't argue, instruct, grab, or correct them unless it is your legal responsibility to do so, and you are qualified.
6. Have regular training on any and all weapons that you choose to use and handle.
7. Never pull a weapon in anger. If you pull it, it is to protect life of you or others when all other options have been exhausted. Always shoot to kill, or don't shoot. Once the bullet leaves the weapon, it will change things forever hit or miss.
8. Always secure your weapon. It is your responsibility no matter what. It is always best to have it locked and secured when not being used or carried for personal defense.
9. Every gun is to be treated as a weapon no matter the type.
I personally even treat my nail guns the same way as it applies. I hope that I never have to use a gun in a hostile manor. Target shooting is just fine by me. But if I have to use one in the cause of defense, I know how to do so accurately and as safe as is possible. For everyone but the target threat.

All Middle School PE classes should have an AirSoft module where the AirSoft guns are used to teach respect, safety, handling and use of "firearms".

Maybe even as early as 4th grade.

This way when a kid finds an unsecured weapon the first thing they DON'T do is point it at someone or themselves.

Find a responsible adult and ask for help!
