Does Sharon Bulova deserve to have a public building in Fairfax County named after her? Who Else should have their name on a Fairfax County building?

Sharon Bulova Center
The Sharon Bulova Center for Community Health. May 12, 2022.
What happened? Last Thursday, I joined many current and former colleagues on the Board of Supervisors along with some outstanding members of our Fairfax-Falls Church Community Services Board (CSB), to rename the Merrifield Center to the Sharon Bulova Center for Community Health.
Why? Over her incredible 30+ year tenure on the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors, including 10 years as Chairman, Sharon Bulova championed many initiatives, including our Diversion First program that has led the state in reforming how mental health issues are managed within our public safety system.
What happens at the Sharon Bulova Center? The Merrifield Crisis Support Center, now the Sharon Bulova Center for Community Health, is the main point of entry into CSB treatment programs. The Center serves an average of 4,800 people each year.
What's Diversion First? Diversion First is a program that diverts people from potential arrest, and instead connects them with mental health services.
Since the Center opened in 2016, there have been over 12,000 law enforcement transports to the Center for services. 3,540 transports occurred because an officer recognized that an individual was in need of behavioral health services.
2,600 people have been diverted from potential arrest and into a CSB program.
80% of those diverted from potential arrest in 2019 were not incarcerated during the following year.
It feels so fitting to see this critical intervention center named for Sharon Bulova. She led the Diversion First program in its infancy and set Fairfax County on its path to managing mental health in a more holistic and compassionate manner. I look forward to seeing this program continue to grow.
