My kid has seasonal asthma and started to get cold symptoms yesterday. We are keeping him home today. We called the Dr. and they said definitely start him back up on his inhaler and oral meds for asthma and make an appt. if the cold doesnt improve or gets worse within 48 hours.

We mentioned our concerns about the Enterovirus EV-D68 and although he did not directly reply to that the advise he is giving us seems very very cautious. We were never told to bring him in for a cold in the past. Keep an eye on this parents and call your Dr. if you have questions. I get the sense the OP is for real here and we have something pretty dangerous to at risk kids in the area.

It looks like it may have reached Henrico County (Richmond) and the read I am getting from our Dr. is they are being very careful here in Fairfax.

Finally, fwiw and in similar fashion to your uniformed error above, no, actually deportations did not increase under the Obama administration. What's counted as deportation in the numbers was what increased.

Prince William County schools on Tuesday posted a warning about a respiratory virus causing severe reactions in the Midwest, asking all to take precautions to prevent the spread.

“With your help, and the use of standard precautions, we can minimize any possible impact from this ailment to keep our students and families healthy,” school officials said in a news release.

Though there have been alarming headlines the last few days about a serious strain of the “enterovirus,” but Dr. Laurie Forlan of the Virginia Department of Epidemiology isn’t raising a red flag.

“Enteroviruses are very common, and there are over 100 types of enteroviruses,” Forlano said Tuesday.

Such viruses aren’t required to be reported to the state unless there is a “cluster of severe respiratory illnesses” as has happened in the Midwest, she said.

“We have no laboratory confirmed cases of EV-D68 to date in Virginia, which is the type that has gained much attention in the past few days, due to lab confirmed clusters in the Midwest area of the country,” she said.

Doctors at two hospitals in Richmond this week reported seeing an increase in children being admitted for severe respiratory illness, though none have been confirmed to have the EV-D68 strain, the Richmond Times Dispatch reported.

One doctor told the paper that 10 children had been admitted with “serious, sudden-onset respiratory illness” and that four were critically ill when they arrived.

Health officials say there are many precautions that can be taken to prevent the spread of viral respiratory illnesses, including common enteroviruses. Prevention steps include:

•Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. This will block the spread of droplets from your mouth or nose that could contain germs.
•Wash your hands often with soap and water. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand rub.
•Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth. Germs spread this way.
•Try to avoid close contact with sick people.
•Disinfect frequently touched surfaces, such as toys and doorknobs, especially if someone is sick.
•If you or your child gets sick with a respiratory illness, limit contact with others as much as possible to help prevent spreading illness. Stay home (or keep your child home) for at least 24 hours after fever is gone except to seek medical care or for other necessities. Fever should be gone without the use of a fever-reducing medicine.
•Take steps to ensure optimal control of asthma in children.

I work part-time in a local hospital and have seen it myself. They're keeping them in an isolated area and making all staff sign a waiver they won't talk about it, even if you don't work there.

I happened to see it for myself one day when one of the internists left the door open. It's usually PIN-code locked, but she used the flip down door stop to hold it open while she wheeled out a push cart with lab samples. She must have forgotten to close it as she got a call that same moment.

I peeked in and there was what looked like about two dozen children of all ages and a handful of adults as well. All having trouble breathing. Some were spitting up blood. One kid was vomiting. There was even a little baby. That just broke my heart.

Anyhow, they don't want this getting out so no one's talking about it officially, however in candid conversations with one of the guys I know works in that unit he said they have no idea what it is. It's not tuberculosis or SARS or anything the CDC has ever seen. All they know is that it doesn't get much worse than they're seeing but it doesn't improve either. And it all started in late August with a group of new kids in the county.
