You bitch about $5.91 now, but will have no problem when the state forks over tens of thousands of dollars through Medicare to deal with your lung cancer and emphysema.

No. Because you don't make enough to pay your own medical bills. Nobody does. You are either using insurance, which results in your employers and people like me having to pay higher premiums, or, when you are in your 60s and the cancer presents itself, you will be using Medicare, which taxpayers like me will have to foot the bill.

I think every insurance company should be given the latitude to drop coverage of people who smoke or who qualify as obese. That would result in huge cost savings from this country.

No it wouldn't. They would still get sick and our hospitals would still treat them, just like they do any indigents, and taxpayers would still be paying for it.

Tax the shit out of cigarettes. VA has one of the cheapest cig taxes, we should use New Jersey as a model and tax like they do. Over $2.50/pack. That'd take care of the budget shortfall.

For the record if you check "smoker" you pay a much higher insurance premium. So all this BS about smokers costing other more is bullshit. Smokers subsidize healthier peoples insurance.

The higher premiums don't even begin to cover the higher costs.

My father was a smoker and he has spent the past 20 years in and out of hospitals for emphysema, prostate cancer, congestive heart failure and lung disease all tied to smoking. Whenever he goes to the hospital, it is always to the ICU for weeks at a time. He must have cost taxpayers hundreds of thousands of dollars (he is a vet, so the VA has picked up most of it).

At the same time my uncle, who quit smoking when he was young, is perfectly healthy and seldom goes to the hospital. The health between the two is night and day.

Then we need to change the laws so that hospitals can deny treating these people. The only way to change our healthcare system is to bring down costs. The only way to do that is to change the behavior of average Americans. Smoke less. Eat less. Drink less. Exercise more. It is going to require draconian measures or it won't happen.

We will never deny the sick and needy. I wont, you wont and yes even the Republicans will not (remember the 20 million 'religious base'). The insurance companies make out in our country. They are like a de-facto government for-profit-arm. For the most part they decide whom get which treatment and when. Then with their own accounting they decide whom pays for what.

All the medical 'costs' have non-covered non-paying patients factored into their cost. So they pass that along to the insurance companies. The insurance companies need to make a profit so they add yet another sum to the cost. Then of course it is all the insured and their employers whom pay the cash.

Oh and yes insured smokers pay for their coverage and pay taxes on their weed. Sadly they will probably 'benefit' from their insurance sooner or later as the myriad of maladies befall them as they certainly will.

This argument is always amusing. If you were to add lung cancer and emphysema as causes of death, heart disease still doubles that total. Why isn't there a tax on foods containing saturated fat that is twice the amount of tobacco tax? There is tons more money going to people with heart disease. I am not a smoker and I am not overweight, I just find it amusing that people point to smokers and call them medicare wasters while chomping on Big Macs and causing twice the problem.

I smoke, and one of two things will happen:

1. It will kill me before I have a chance to breed, thus denying my weak genetics the chance to spread.

2. It won't kill me, and my strong genetics will be worthy of being passed on.

Either way, I'm doing my part for the human race.

I just bought a carton today, 34.99 USD at the Exxon? in Reston near Wiehle and Sunrise Valley. (across from saturated fat burger heaven, McDonalds)

Where in Tyson's was your purchase?

BTW, avoid the Exxon in FC at Idylwood Plaza, they've always been 33%ish higher than anywhere around.

And with todays economy...i don't need to be down anymore than i already am. :| so a cheaper pack of occasional stress relieving smokes will do.

this price hike is bullshit. Why not fucking make cigarettes illegal. Or maybe they should punish the tobacco companies for putting out a product that kills, isntead of fucking the consumers in the ass who are addicted. Doesnt Virginia have a strong enough tobacco lobby that they can stop bullshit like this? Id pay 6 bucks a pack if it was ciga-weed, but its not...

They are more than $10 a pack in NY, just over $7 in MD. The tax hike was federal though... not state taxes. Anyways Virginia has the cheapest smokes in the nation.

well your wish is coming true.....in december. this sh!t is bullsh!t. places should have the right to say if they are/are not smoke free. The fact is, when is the last time you saw someone smoke and crash their car, killing people? while we are at it, why not increase alcohol taxes 300%? alcohol kills your liver, which increases medical costs and you can kill people when you get behind a vehicle.

The smoking "ban" is not ban at all really. Does not apply to 21 and over only places. A separate smoking room is allowed and it only has to be a separate room, no separate ventilation or anything else is needed. So as long as you have a door frame you can create a second smoking room.
