School Starts - The Journey Before Sunrise...
Posted by: Atlas Shruged in Fairfax ()

Well up at 5:45 am and my seventh grade kid on the bus at 6:35 am - Im glad we are teaching our kids the value of hard work and early rising! I know all you fellow conservatives were up and Adam with us before sunrise. Makes a body feel responsible.

After the first few weeks Im really gonna give my son a leg up and wake him up around 4 am so that he is even better than the best.

My kid's middle school bus came at 7:20- not too bad! Got to sleep in until 6 ("sleep in" lol).

Happy first day everyone!

Okay - its early so you may be forgiven for missing the pun

ADAM is a commodity in the Bioshock game series which is based in the ruins of a social experiment based on Ayn Rand's books including Atlas Shrugged

And no, making a teenage daughter get up and get ready to catch a 6:20 bus does not make anyone look or feel responsible

Lol it was early and I own the "Adam" mistake - I wasnt thinking clearly. Honestly Im not used to getting up before 645 so 545 was a big deal for me. Anyway to the poster saying his kids bus is 720 for middle school - how is that possible? The first bell is 725 and kids within a mile dont get bused to they?

Not all of the middle schools start at 7:25, some start later.

12 year olds getting up at 550am is not the end of the world really, it just seems weird. Why ask ALL of them to rise before most adults? pre-teens getting up 1.5 hours before sunrise in the winter. I cannot believe that is good for learning.

I'm at work before 6:00am so that I can leave by 3:00pm to pick up my kid from school. Requiring them to get up early enough to have Mom drop them by 8:00am doesn't seem like we're asking a lot. I don't get up early, at 4:45am, because I like it.

Argh. That sucked. Had to get up before 6:00 a.m. this morning to catch the bus for school. When are they going to push back the start time to something reasonable so we don't have to get up so early?

Adults. Yes. But 12 year old out the door by 630 at the latest? Come on now. I mean Im impressed all the people you know work for the government.

This whole thing smells of indoctrination to me. The US has the most productive workers and yet wages are stagnant (http://www.ibtimes.com/america-workers-are-more-productive-their-wages-are-flat-some-cases-lower-1393941). This making kids get up before the sunrise (in winter that would be 90 min. before sunrise) is just a way to produce compliant drones. Most other free countries laugh at our sick outlook on work.

Well it's 6:25 am and my high school daughter will be awake in 5 minutes and at school by 7:10, just missing the beginning of the morning traffic.

I enjoyed a peaceful hour by myself.

She has a busy day with homework from 2:30 to 3:00 and sports practice at 3:05. Will be in bed by 10:30 pm.

Like most parents, very happy that school starts before 7:30.

Why can't we just opt for a 9-5 schedule making sports begin at 3:30pm and for kids that work, they are excused, or if they don't want to play sports (or, can't because they are shitty athletes), they can opt for other extracurriculars or even study hall?

It guess it would make too much sense to align school hours with standard work hours.

You forgot school serves as day care for parents that like to get to work early. I dont blame them as I dont like morning traffic either. Parents just roust the teenagers up before sunrise shove them out the door and our day is started. This is MUCH easier for the grown-ups and being as we control the world for our kids - screw them. If they want they can change things when they grow up but for now WE make the rules and this is best for the adults.

Oh and please lets not even pretend that this is 'best' for the kids, or that getting up an hour and a half before sunrise in the winter builds character in a 12 year old. This is about me getting to work before rush hour with enough time to stop by Starbucks to get my double-shot latte.

Fairfax has it backwards...HS kids should start last like they do in Loudoun County, time to get with the new times...oh and lose that 1/2 day Monday bullshit...
Loudoun is the new Fairfax..buck up and move out west.

My high school was overcrowded in the 70's and we had split sessions - the 11th and 12th grade went to school from 7am to 12:30 and the 9th and 10th grades went to school from noon to 5pm for at least five years until another school was built. Kind of liked sleeping in but hated being in class at 4:30pm. There are trade offs.

Chinese teens are far more productive, and cost much less.

Productivity is slowly expanding in China but lags behind most of the western world. This is one major reason why wages have been so low there, but as the CPC is dedicated now to turning China toward a consumerist economy, those low wages are quickly going to become a thing of the past.

1. There are no more 1/2 day Mon. in Fairfax - where have you been?
2. Teens sleep patterns are different- they go to sleep later. Its part of brain development.
3. Loudoun seem nice but you waste your life in a car getting to and from anywhere.

How could have your school been overcrowded in 70's?
There no illegals then and that is the only reason possible for overcrowded schools.

I know you aren't serious, but for those who weren't around then school overcrowding was a big problem in the 1970s because of surging development.

That was good ole days. I lived in the Northeast and the town controlled the schools, not the county. My graduating class in 1981 was over 1,100 kids and we had 5 blacks, no hispanics and 1 jew. Sigh....
