at least two Vacancies at my kids school
Posted by: Mother of 3 ()
Date: August 29, 2014 12:44AM

My daughters received their school schedule today, and Hannah has the word "Vacancy" under her "Math teacher name" My other daughter Abby has the world "Vacany" under her English Teacher name. What does this mean? I email the principal right after this incident and didn't received a respond from her. Anyone know why they are not hiring teachers?

Interesting. Caveat My Opinion.

Most teachers now are young, fresh out of college and dreamers of how they are going save and help the world. After that first or second year of teaching experience the true reality of walking into and staying in a classroom today becomes apparent, fuck that find a better job or go private school. The shit they have to put up with is not worth it.

When came out of the Army several years, officers were highly sought and recruited for teaching programs. The idea was they were highly motivated, disciplined and "could follow orders". Several of my friends have done it and quit. Teachers are powerless and need protection from these dangerous kids, yea your kids.

Liberal school administrators are just that, no back up, flow with the wind, hide in their offices and will fuck you or throw you overboard in a minute to save their asses and cover up.

You have no ability to manage or control your students, they own you and any thing they say that is detrimental about you, you're fucked.

Schools knows that there is this yearly life line a college graduates that won't find a job and resort to teaching. Plenty of cannon fodder.

No I did not teach when I came out of the Army and never considered it because I like to protect myself too much. These and your kids, Hell no I would never be responsible for them. Too dangerous.

Might have something to do with the school. Mount Vernon HS is not exactly a school-of-choice for teachers, including first year teachers.

And comprehension. I might add that there are more than just a few last names. For instance, in my village we had three different last names: Smith, Baker and Miller. Crazy huh?

Well fuck me if I'm wrong but I'm assuming your daughter is in 10th grade since she is taking English 10 and H & PE 10...

But the fact that she is taking Algebra in 10th grade means your daughter is a dumbass. Most students who are ahead take Algebra in 8th grade. An average student takes Algebra in 9th grade. So if Hannah is taking Algebra as a 10th grader, it means she's behind.

For caring so much about you daughters schooling, I'm suprised she is slacking.

Dear Mother of Three,

I just wanted to clarify that I am, in fact, a Fairfax County Public schools educator who just happens to have a terribly confusing surname that far that students and parents mistake for a placeholder of sorts.

My real name is Marcella Vacancy, but you may call me Marci! My last name is my married name and per family lore, it was heavily altered from the original Italianate form and Americanized (poorly) to Vacancy, pronounced va-KAHN-zee.

I'm looking forward to having Hannah in Algebra this school year.

My apologies for any confusion and/or disappointment my name may have caused. I usually address the students' collective bewilderment in a humorous way when I meet them the first day.

Best,

Marci Vacancy

(that's va-KAHN-zee!)

Who are you to judge the educational progression of anyone you fucking asshole. Maybe this child has learning disabilities and is far ahead of where they should be in their cognitive development by taking Algebra in 10th grade. Did you stop to consider that you prick. You do not know what is going on with this child.

People are making mountains out of anthills here.

Many FCPS schools have a brand new student information systems. As such, some of the finer details are still being worked out. I know at my school, all of the teaching vacancies have been filled for weeks, the problem is that their names have not yet been uploaded in the aforementioned scheduling system. Breath, people. It isn't the conspiracy that you think it is.

The county is laying off as many core subject teachers and staff as they can to budget for ESOL teachers to teach the 1,000 plus new "immigrants" that are entitled to be taught in their native language in classes with 15 students or less. Your kids will just get "doubled up" and hope they learn something while packed in rooms like sardines.

When we say that we're speaking Standard English, what we're doing is transferring into our spoken vocabulary and syntax the elements of the written language. What is standard in what you and I are talking now is what we get from our writing.

Its the teacher they pulled to teach the 1,000 UACs coming to FFX county. They'll probably do a rotating sub for a few weeks until they can rework your kid's schedule to cram a few more into each class.

Ding ding ding ding ding! We have a winner. This is indeed the schedule for a special education student at MVHS. No shame in taking Algebra as a sophomore. As long as they take two more math classes after this and pass one math SOL, they will have met the math requirement portion of the standard diploma.

To answer the OP's question, clearly "vacancy" means they have not hired a teacher yet for that position. It is not uncommon for high needs positions (math, science, reading, special Ed, etc) to go unfilled all year especially at a school like mt. Vernon. A long term sub will be hired until they can find someone for the job.

^ I thought they had tons of applications for each job available in FCPS. Seriously, they don't? The pay is so high. I can't imagine they wouldn't have people pounding down the doors to get the jobs.

No trouble understanding "Vacancy," but why is the word preceded by "M." as if it's a surname and initial? ("Marcella Vah-KHAN-zy?" Cute.)

As said in an earlier post, try dealing with some of the heathens sent to public schools and show up for every reason besides learning. Thanks to the new improved SR and R , dangerous kids are allowed to stay in general population. Outside of the school they would be prosecuted for their behavior by the criminal justice system but FCPS administrators bend like a sign post in a tornado when parents come in to beat on their desks. School staff, especially non-teachers get rolled over time and time again. There isn't enough money for me to ever go back. The inmates are running the asylums.

They have tons of applications for a lot of positions. Elementary teachers are a dime a dozen. But no one wants to teach sped and not a lot of people are qualified to teach things like reading and math. Those are specialized positions that are hard to find people for. Those are the positions where you have very few applicants and even fewer who want to teach at the schools in the MVHS or WestPo pyramids.

Because there has to be a first initial and a last name in the system as a teacher for the class. If I had to guess, I'd say they used "M" as the first initial because it's a Math vacancy. Or else they just chose a random letter.

Because they're struggling in math.

From the school's course catalog:
ACTIVE PHYSICS (451050)
Grades: 10, 11, 12 Credit: one
Prerequisite: One laboratory science course
Active Physics is a physics course for students who have not yet passed Algebra I or weak in geometry. This course has a strong emphasis on experimentation. The units of study focus on predictions and real-world applications such as sports, medicine, transportation, home, and communication. The physics content is presented in a problem solving manner to strengthen science and mathematics content knowledge and skills.
