I heard from an insider. He did not retire on purpose.

There is a thing called "resign/retire or be fired". Most people choose resign or retire when given a choice. It looks better for all parties involved.

Sorry, Joe, your burning itch to fire the principal did not pan out. If he was fired, he would be over at gatehouse with the other firees. Instead, he will receive a very nice retirement, and if he wants to continue to serve can come back as a well-paid consultant.

The real question is who, Joe, will you target next?
