FY2013 was $13,564 per pupil - so approximately $14M worth of new students. What's a destitute, ESOL, FRM student cost above average? +25%, or maybe more?

These undocumented Americans are very lucky to land here in Fairfax county and we are lucky to have them. After they receive a great education the vast majority of them will live in this country and pay taxes for decades. In the meantime they will be consumers that help to drive our economy. This is a bargain for the taxpayers, truly a win-win situation.

there was no air conditioning. i got no aid though (i applied at one time, late 90's or early 2000's, due to change in gov requirements the same year i got a degree)

and though i had a degree i still didn't even get interviewed for jobs i later found out were shoed in by the likes of sharon bullova gov: to their family and kids

they are jumping generations by their spending and preventing me not only from having a family: they want my life as well - and some have tried to take a few times

There are laws against vagrancy. Any landlord renting to an illegal should have their property seized by the county and put up for auction. If these roaches have no place to live, they will leave. No. The ESOL teachers have seen it all. Believe me, they have seen the most illiterate people you can imagine. People who can barely hold a pencil. Non English speaking is not a big deal. Illiterate is a HUGE deal. There is a window of time when a human being's brain is "primed" for learning to read and write (this window is when the person just soaks up these language skills). If that window passes (and the window is from about ages 5 through 11), it becomes much more difficult to teach them those skills. Once puberty starts, the brain goes through some changes that reduce its elasticity for learning language. It's a crime for a government not to educate their children (IMO). We cannot afford to have countries (in this century) where huge groups in the population are not sent to school (I mean schools that actually have meaningful teaching going on). If a person comes here and is illiterate and is over the age of 12 (or even 10 in some cases), the chances that the person will graduate from high school are very, very small. This statement is based on my experience with these people. The problem is that we do not need more high school drop outs in this country. I'm not saying that they will never graduate, but it will most likely not happen by the time they are 21. If we need more service labor, then they are a good deal. But, they don't pay a lot of taxes because they don't make a lot of money (and much of it gets sent back home). I'm not sure how that pans out in the long run in terms of return, but it's probably closer to a wash than a real deal.

And what has happened between 2007 and 2014? How do you know that it was the undocumented workers that increased legal workers' pay and not some other factor? Parents in FCPS need to ban together to demand quality education for their children. Ask the social workers in the school and the people who work in the schools how many there are. It would make your head spin. There is nothing left for for the people that pay their taxes and what they deserve.

Immigrants are a huge asset when:

a) the children come with both parents and are therefore emotionally stable and have had some basic education in their first language (if they are already in school); unaccompanied children bring lots of emotional/social baggage that requires a lot of support in getting them adjusted to parents/stepparents whom they have not seen in years or possibly never seen.

b) the area they are moving into has plenty of resources (tax money and community buy in) to support the newcomers without taking away from the student population that already exists.

c) the jobs that exist can support the new children and the parents or guardians are able to get those jobs.

d) the government has enough employees to monitor immigration and keep it balanced so that the society continues to progress both economically and socially and to provide opportunities for all citizens and immigrants.

If the above things are in place, we can benefit enormously from the new immigrants. If not, the immigrants may struggle for a long period of time. Does the tax base support more immigrants here? If so, how many? Will supply and demand take care of the whole issue or will there be an erosion of living standards to the point where the "American middle class" is not satisfied? Will Americans accept higher class sizes and schools that are not being maintained for their children? Will they vote people out or will they simply move out (or not move in)? Will the county have pockets of poverty and pockets of wealth that become wider apart? I think people already see what is happening.

Los Angeles County has over 10 million residents and took in less than 2,000 of these children. Dade County (Miami) has 2.7 million residents and took in about 1,600. Fairfax has a tad over a million residents and took in over 1,000 of these children. Fairfax's share has been proportionally higher than either LA or Miami's. I'm sure this was not planned; it just happens that we have been impacted more than other areas. The article didn't tell how many went to those two counties in New York, so it's hard to say what that impact is, but New York has, overall, a higher larger population than we do here.

It is just not out county but our county. It is NOT fair to ask the tax payers to take on the burden of these kids. They need to go back to their country and to their parents and or take their illegal parents back to their country. We are not going to have the resources for our children's children. We also need to have a president that puts the American people first.
