Coolest buildings in Northern Virginia
Posted by: Cary ()
Date: June 09, 2006 07:51PM

There is some neat architecture in Northern Virginia. These are the coolest buildings off the top of my head, but I know there are many more.

Please add your own favorites.

The "CIT" building. Better known as that upside down building near dulles airport. Always causes me to stare.
CIT and NVTC building

Dulles airport itself has some impressive architecture.
Dulles Airport

That new building off 28 by Dulles Town Center. It's really cool at night with the big blue light that runs along the side, although the last couple times I've been past it the light hasn't been on:
The Corporate Office Park near Dulles Town Center

The Udvar Hazy Smithsonian Air and Space Musem Annex in Chantilly isn't as neat architecturally as the others, but its massive size definitely makes it one of the coolest buildings in Northern Virginia.

I know there are a bunch more, what have I missed?

I vote for the NRO, the National Reconnaissance Office, in Chantilly. It looks like one really cool building from the outside, but in reality is 4 inter-connected buildings as shown by this Google maps satellite image. Strangely, I couldn't find any good pictures of it on Google image search. Maybe I'll go snap some pictures tomorrow.

The CIT building is retarded inside.

You have to take different elevators to get to different floors, basically walking from elevator to elevator located on other sides of the building to go from top to bottom. Drunken lunatic designed that insane asylum.

That building would be cool.. if it were in a city. By itself it's this giant towering monstrosity that's completely out of place and proportion compared to the buildings around it. I HATE driving 495 past it.

That building then, is ahead of its time.

Give Tysons another decade or so, and you will see what a city it becomes. Bringing the Metro there will only make things more congested - yikes!

That's not a monstrosity in Tysons. This is...

http://www.naiopva.org/app/images/site/02awardsgannett.jpg

...Especially at night. It's like, let's make a fucking design decision and stick with it instead of trying to incorporate every design element ever conceived of into one building. There's nothing like the original for elegant simplicity...

The new USA Today building versus the old USA Today towers. While the towers are typical of 70s and 80s utilitarian design, I think they hold up better and are more dramatic than the hodge-podge of design elements offered in the new USA Today building.

My dad was in Bermuda and he said there are a lot of moongates like the one featured on the toilet bowl building. So the Architect prolly got the idea from there.

good thread, cept you took the buildings i was gonna post on your first topic, you couldnt of done buildings more east or north FFX? damn

what about buildings that look normal but are fronts for the secret service and CIA?

the bank on the corner of Spring St and Herndon PKWY is a CIA front, kinda looses the secret effect when there is a CIA gift shop in the back lmao.

and the building to the right of route 28 across the way from the chantilly expo center looks normal but is suppossed to be a secret service interweb monitoring facility and they say it has the electronics that prevent ppl from listening or using a video camera to hear/see inside the building.

Close. It's the NRO. They do the satellite imagery for the rest of the intelligence community. Interesting fact, when the building was under construction the existence of the NRO was classified and it was built under the guise of "the Honeywell corporation." Definitely a neat building. Someone mentioned it above and said they'd get pictures. I have a few but they're crappy. It's large and difficult to photograph.

If you like that piece of garbage building near Dulles airport (imagine people visiting DC from all over the world and the first thing they see leaving the airport is that ugly piece of garbage), check out Holmes Run Drive at Gallows Road and the beltway. Some strange loking houses there! Some are 90% windows, most are 1 level and odd shaped. Frank Lloyd Wright on acid....

From what I understand is the NRO was highly top secret in it's construction. The NSA and other agenices were using thier "slush funds" to build the building, and Congress had no idea it was under construction. They didn't find out about the building until two armed security guards were found killed execution style on the construction grounds. When that became public everyone, including Congress wanted to know why a building that is 4-5 stories underground (from what I have heard), needed highly armed security guards, and were killed while on patrol. Afterwards it became public, to an extent.

I remember after 9/11 a special "hutch" was errected on the roof of the building that wasnt there before. A lot of speculation was that they had some type of ground-to-air missle mounted on the top of the building, or snipers. I know they have round the clock roving security guards, that are armed with 12 gauge shotguns that patrol on foot, and they have trucks that drive the perimiter, and onto 28. Also after 9/11 they got rid of the middle entrance that was at the traffic light on Lee Road, and made the new entrance to the far right of the building, if you are looking at it from Lee Road. Pushing all traffic away from the building as best as possible.

Neat topic, unfortunately I can't find any pics online right now of some of my choices. One of them was the Time-Life building in Old Town Alexandria, near the Washington Masonic Memorial (another good choice that someone already listed).

One that has personal significance is Skyline Towers in Falls Church. Here's a pretty good picture of it:

http://smithcommercialrealty.com/_/Image/300x500/OneSkylineTower.jpg

This one is Chapman's Mill, near Haymarket, VA. I talk about it more in the other thread I created on it.

Even though I'm not too fond of the house per say, the property of Mount Vernon is beautiful, as is the Thomas Jefferson property at Monticello:

The former Time-Life Building (Time-Life is no longer at the building) is an interesting looking office building, but not spectacular.

http://www.davisconstruction.com/assets/ProjectPhotos/00000453.jpg

The new Patent Office Building, on the other hand, is spectacular. Actually, probably too spectacular for a Federal office building.

Hey, does anyone know what that (new-ish) building is right off 95 south before the first rest area?

It's on the northbound lane side. Very neat building with a spire that comes up and out at a 45 degree angle towards the highway.

Thanks.

I think the CIT building is so fn ugly, looks like it’s possessed by the devil, and probably causes people to commit suicide because they’re totally disoriented.

As for the shopping bag building at Tysons, there are 3 buildings that make up Towers Crescent. One of them is so incredibly toxic inside that I doubt if a germ could live in there. The parking area for those buildings looks like a slum.

Harris Tweeter moved out of Fairfax because the parking lot there sucked so badly. It’s bad enough that we all have to climb stairs around here to do anything, but a 2 story grocery store is beyond horrible.

As for the prison by Lorton, I guess the guy who lives next to it is going to have to change the name of his place from “Prison View Estate” to “Mcmansion View Estate.”

And now we are getting an even uglier look to practically every new building being built, they all look like red brick boxes with white lids. Those are totally hideous.

I used to courier a while ago, and Towers Crescent was a first-class dump. I have never seen a building with such duality. It looks fine on the outside, but on the inside the five offices I would frequent were in serious disrepair. The eleveator at one point was physically shaking when I used it, not just a little rattle but intense noise and side-to-side movement. There are no atheists in a Towers Crescent elevator, the saying goes.

I don't know if this is specifically what Lasuena is talking about, maybe she knows of some particular reason I should visit an oncologist or something.

Funny thing about this building is that it's sinking slowly into the ground because the foundation was done wrong, and that is why no company has bought it and it hasn't had any tenants until recently I think they have someone renting a space.

There's alot more buildings I've been in with crazy stuff, I just can't talk about it :) But there's alot of stuff that goes on around us. Government contractors are sketchy.

You are a fool. This building is not sinking. The original owner was refused an occupancy permit, so to spite the county he lit the building up for 3 years. The lights were said to have interfere with aircontrol. No complaints were filed against the lights, inturn the permit was granted and now companies have begun to utilize space. people like you are idiots... (OOO its sinking man, OOO) whatever.

that building above currently only has one tenant taking up 3/4 of the 4th floor. the reason it wasnt occupied for awhile is because it did have a cracked foundation that needed to be repaired. it is repaired now, however its not sinking into the ground nor has it ever.

This building isn't a toilet bowl. It's actually an old Kodak building. The building is a camera. The big circular part of the building is the lens. You can't see the camera from this angle but if you look at it straight on it does look like a camera.... an old one... but a camera none the less

When my dad was stationed in Bermuda he saw a lot of Round stone circles just like the front of that building. He thinks the Architect was inspired by these "Moon Gates" in Bermuda to incorporate that into his design.

That last photo above looks like Ted Lerner's building at Dulles Town Center in Sterling. We looked at renting some space there, but they wanted their rate (at least $20/sq ft over going rates) and nothing but so we walked away. It's an OK facility, but not that great.

I snapped this pic on my phone 2 months ago and just found it... it's 1401 Wilson Blvd (corner of Nash and Wilson) in Rosslyn.

The underground garage below this building was the one used by Bob Woodward and "Deep Throat" for their clandestine meetings during the Watergate scandal. Not the prettiest building in Rosslyn, but it played sort of a cool role in local history.

Seriously? Its almost 2008. Its not 1969 with cows and farmland anymore. PWC has a lot of newer homes nicer than you would find in FFX. They have shitty malls but they are putting 2 Wegmans there, among other "upper crust" retail shops and entertainment that FFX has. They are evolving, the rednecks have moved to Stafford and all of the Hispanics are moving to Woodbridge. So the stigma attached to PWC on this board is all wrong. All of you probably rent your homes in FFX anyway, LOL.

"The toilet Bowl" building is actually the first site of the Fairfax County Courthouse. But the Indians were so hostile they had to move it to it's present location or where it was before Fairfax County moved to it's present location. There's a plaque if you look for it outside TGIF.

Had to add Washington National Cathedral. It was pretty well known among architects since, until it was finished a few years ago, it was the only piece of gothic architecture under construction in the world.

Most of the architecture in this area is either excruciatingly mundane or just plain goofy. That piece of crap at Tysons has somehow managed to be both. Those four columns in front just scream Jenga! Stand back! No high winds!

Here's a cool Frank Lloyd Wright house in the area.

I like this thread better than the other current topics, so I'll add two more I took a few months back. It's the old Newseum building in Rosslyn; one taken from the skypark over Wilson, the other from the mezzanine of the Rosslyn Twin Towers. I think it looks neat, but probably falls under "just plain goofy". Arlington county recently took possession of it and is taking bids from potential occupants- they want it to be another museum.

FWIW, that TGIF closed down in January 07.

Thanks for the info though, I always wondered why the street across from there was called Old Courthouse Road.

Every time we would pass what you now call the CIT Building (- I remember in the 80s it was home to a government Contractor named Scope who I am sure merged with another government contractor) my father would go into a rage and this was long before road rage was cool.

"People fly to this country from all over the world and the first thing they see after leaving the airport is that ugly piece of crap!" he would bellow.

Actually, he has moved away and when he was visiting a couple years ago, I picked him up at Dulles. As we got on the access road he looked up and said "they still haven't torn down that piece of crap yet?".

As I recall, as part of it, Congress got the building declassified so they could grandstand in hearings about the gold plated building and the slush fund. Also, the California delegation was ticked because part of the plan was to consolidate people from LA to here. The slush fund came from money allocated for building new satellites that the NRO turned out to not need - they'd made the mistake of building satellites too well, the old ones hadn't died when they were supposed to. Rather than giving the unneeded money back, they built their new headquarters.

Yeah, the Cannons are aimed at the Bank of America. They should just go ahead and fire them already.

That was the auto body/mechanic shop with the gnomes and shit. It was sad when they tore that down, as it'd been around forever.

The old Kodak building was on Choke Cherry Rd (Dr, Blvd?) in Gaithersburg when the surrounding area was farms. Unless the toilet bowl building was the WAAAAAAAY old Kodak building...

I watched them develop my Kodachrome in that building a number of times.

The Frank Lloyd Wright is the Pope Leheigy house that used to sit on Locust St in Falls Church before Rt 66 was built. It sat right where the Arlington sign hangs on the barricade wall before the the Westmoreland St exit. It's now sitting on the grounds of Woodlawn Plantation. Really neat place....

George Mason's mansion Gunston Hall in Mason Neck. Then interesting thing about this house is that it was about around the same time as Mt. Vernon, but it's made of real brick. I guess Mason has more money to start with than George Washington did. This is classic 18th Century design, with symetrical windows and chimneys, and a really cool garden out the back door. Last time I was there the garden was bare because they didn't have the cash to landscape it.

I doubt many core internet routers actually sit in the building itself - probably just some management centers.

The place is gigantic though. It sort of looks and feels like an airport inside - with various concourses branching off. People will walk from one end to the other at lunch for exercise.

Yeah but said IXP's do sit in the buildings that are right next door to it
