trash scavengers
Posted by: a world of human rats ()

We called for a county special pickup but by the time they got here at 8:30 everything was gone, and this wasn't any primo trash, this was crap. A bike that had sat behind the shed for 15 years, rusted and missing parts. A clothes hanger thing that had parts thrown out separately. Broken kids toys. A broken foot stool.

Can they sell this junk for $2 an item? How low are you on the scale of humanity when you are driving around at the crack of dawn every trash day? Where do these people live that they can store this mess?

One man's trash is another man's treasure. Maybe it makes a difference if a child gets fed or not today. You're just full of human kindness, aren't you? As far as trash goes, why don't you sit on the curb?

I'm just saying that I buy things new, use them until I'm done, and then throw them away, it's my stuff, I don't want anyone else using it.

my parents put some big old lamps out by the curb last year, and some redneck lookin guy in a pickup stopped, pulled out a utility knife and cut the cords off them, got in his truck and left. I'm guessing he wanted the cords for the copper wire. Hard to believe someone would go thru that effort for small amounts copper but I guess it can add up after awhile.

I had a buddy (not around here) who cleaned out a mother in law suite in his place and put a bedroom set, couches etc on the curb one Saturday with a FREE sign.

He goes out for most of the day, then returns home to find some nearby white trash neighbors he recognized sitting on the furniture. They scampered off like cockroaches in a spotlight when he pulled in the driveway.

HE was puzzled and thought at first they were up to something but didn't chase them. On further inspection, he finds they had put little price tags on the stuff he was tossing and were sitting out there (on a busy road) trying to sell his garbage as if it was their yard sale.

That's actually really funny. Not because they were cheapskates, they could've easily picked the stuff up for free and then sold it, but they were too lazy to even move the stuff onto their own property!

The way my buddy tells the story is side splitting, I LMAO to imagine.

Even funnier, an item or two were actually gone and might have been sold.

I've seen the family, they are the classic redneck shit clan from hell. They have cars in the yard 6 or 8 annoying kids ranging from infant to 20 or so and about 6 or 8 annoying large dogs.

Would have made a great video had he only known.

Totally classless, yet somehow still a little ballsy.

I'd be happy if someone got some use out of the stuff I put out. What I dont like is scavengers trying to sell it. It amazes me that it's hard to give stuff to charity anymore, especially toys (they generally need to be new). So much waste.

Next time post a notice on https://www.freecycle.org/ and give folks who need stuff a chance and keep it out of the landfill...

Worked on the Gulf Coast side of Florida in the late '70s. You had to dodge all the retired folks riding the roads on their 3-wheeled bikes towing little trailers picking up aluminum cans and scrap metal.

These guys are always trolling our neighborhood the evening before trash pick up. Nearly all hispanic but a few black. Trucks generally loaded up before they even get to our street. Seen a few even rummage the construction dumpster some months back when a neighbor was have renovations done.

Now when I have stuff for bulk pick up I put it out the night before regular pick up without calling. 90% of the time the scavenger types take it away and it's done. Only the real junk needs bulk pick up.

In a way they're doing us a service by doing pick up that the county would normally have to get extra employees to do.

Why not? What difference does it make after you throw it away? I give everything away on Craigslist after I am done. People will come get anything. It matter not to me what they do with it as long as it leaves my property. I have not paid to get rid of anything since I discovered Caigslist Free about 15 years ago.

Craigslist Free??? Are you shittin me? Why the fuck would I want to advertise for these scavengers to come to my house? Why the fuck would I bother posting something when I can just call the county? You do know that they come pick up shit for free like three or five times a year? Craigslist? That'll be the day when I use Craigslist.

Except for the meet ups in the Dulles Nordstrom men's room, of course.

if you want to give stuff away for free on craigslist, but want to avoid the people who are just going to re-sell it, list it for at least a dollar in one of the other sections (besides free). it wont show up then with the free items, where the scavengers look.

For the person who hates Craigslist. I call it laziness. So many people just put perfectly good stuff to the curb when they could post it and let someone have it who might need it. Just filling the landfills which are probably full to capacity with perfectly usable stuff. What a waste! I saw bikes and lots of stuff at curbs especially right after Christmas. Even Salvation Army will come out for free.

Probably. OTOH, I must admit to having some trepidation about doing Craigslist/Freecycle thing: waiting for people who don't show up, being abused because they thought "used and I'm giving it away" meant "like new", etc.

For that reason, I take everything to Goodwill or Salvation Army. I get a receipt for tax purposes, they get something they can sell (I don't take 'em real junk): everybody wins. And I can go on MY schedule. For big stuff, yeah, have Sally Ann or Purple Heart come pick it up. Painless.
