Does anyone know if anyone had tried to open a chain of Sonics in Northern VA? Maybe there has been some permit hiccups or something?

If Sonic Headquarters was smart, they would let an investor set up some Hyprid Locations that wouldn't require a parking lot to support a drive in style. More like a normal fast food place. Maybe only have a small section for drive in and the rest normal parking.

It's a two-prong, somewhat related problem...

Whenever a franchise opens in a new city/market, you need a franchisee who along with the brand is willing to risk it all, make a big splash and open multiple locations. Typically 5-10 locations opening within a year is the kind of impact you need. Note to sarcastic trolls...yes, there have been franchises that have made it by slowly building mass in a market. It has been done. It's not the preferred and proven method. Hell, even the reverse can happen...Quizno's blew up here in NOVA 10 years ago and is effectively dead now.

So, you couple the need for 5-10 sites AND the SIZE of the individual plots that a Sonic needs...and it just doesn't work. You're dead in the water before you've ever turned one bit of dirt.

Zoning is a lesser issue. True, local municipalities have clearly indicated that they really dislike "walk-up window food service" or "hop-service" like Sonic uses. Just last year, a local independent business owner wanted to buy a long abandoned water treatment facility on Route 1 south of DCA (NOT the facility at Glebe and Route 1). The one I'm referring to was down near Route 1 and East Bellefonte Avenue). As soon as the city heard the prospective owner wanted to build and operate a BBQ stand with walk-up service, the sale was killed.

You're telling me, if a national chain with currently over 3,500 locations that's been in business for over 50 years wanted to setup shop in NOVA and they had "walk-up"/"hop-service" that they wouldn't rewrite the zoning laws to accommodate a new revenue stream? Again, the real-estate costs are indeed prohibitive, especially given Sonic's price-point but, if someone could put the deal together...state and local governments would help make it happen. Of course, the traffic impact would be thoroughly undesirable, too.

If you read dipshit, there would still be a drive in section. Just not the entire lot.

And then it was covered that that would defeat the point of it being a Sonic in the first place. Take away the drive-in, park & order spots and it's a Checkers, not a Sonic.

And there are Sonics close-ish to Fairfax...2 actually in Fredericksburg and another out in Edgewater. Make it a day-trip to get your fill of coneys, tater-tots, gravy, and slushes that are apparently no where to be found in Northern VA. But basically, land here is just too valuable for a parking lot based business that might turn over just a couple dollars per hour per parking spot.

Also, McDonald's/Burger King/Wendy's/Taco Bell/Five Guys will help you fulfill your goal of topping 500 pounds all the same and just as fast.

Okay, I had to go to Fredericksburg yesterday with two co workers. We went to Sonic and I loved it. You can go in like a regular drive through or you can pull up to a place where you park and order food and they bring it out on skates. We even had three separate orders, one cash and two credit and they handled it perfectly at the drive up and park place.
Somebody said there is one in Manassas now so Im gonna find it. I had bacon cheesburger and onion rings with a watermelon slush. It was great and they serve the entire menu all day. This was the best fast food experience of my life.

at sonic you drive into a feeding stall and take your own sweet time looking at the menu. When you are ready to order you push the red button and order. You can pay by credit card right from your car or they will bring you your change. If you want some ketchup, just push the button and ask. If you decide to have desert or if you just want napkins, just push the button and ask. They bring it to you and you never have to get off your huge lazy ass.

You still have to get out of your car to shit or piss. They need to work on that.

Yeah, I'm wondering too. Dunno why they still can't decide on that.

If you want a sonic, pay the franchise fee and get a location.

One problem would be that a sonic building would have very limited sale options if the place failed. The banks would hesitate on a loan.
