Donating a car in Ffx

Anyone have any ideas for the best way to do this? The car runs but it's not safe so I figure I need to have them bring a tow. Looking for the best deduction. Thanks in advance.

Why the hell are you donating an unsafe car? You are a fucking asshole. A charity doesn't want your problem.

What qualifies the car as unsafe? Did it fail a recent inspection?

You obviously know nothing. Donated cars are rarely used for transportation. They are often used for parts or sold for scrap. Most charities need money, not old cars and have a method to get the most out of any junk car.

It did fail inspection. It's a 2002 Escape...new tires all the trimmings but expensive mechanical issues. I'm leaning towards FPSS for their repair program BUT, generally they have all they need, so I need a back-up plan. Someone who plans to tow it straight to a scrap yard for the $600 in metal or something.

All of the charities who accept cars, boats, RVs, etc., operate in the same way. They have a contractor who handles the pick-up and the car will be taken to wholesale auction. Whatever the car brings at auction is what you can claim. They'll send you a form stating the value received. They receive the balance of the proceeds over the costs of handling the donated vehicle.

Used to be that you could claim some independent BS high "fair market value" but that was abused so now it relies on the reported value. It's a little more complicated than the above in some more unusual cases but that's the general rule.

So, all of them are about the same. Doesn't really matter who you call. Pick whichever you want to get the money and they'll be happy to send out the flatbed truck. They get non-running cars all the time so that's not a problem.

pretty much what he said. The organization will handle the pick up. You just need to sign over the car title and give them the keys.

I donated my car to the Purple Heart Veterans Organization a couple years ago. Very smooth process and they'll send you everything you'll need for the tax write-off. The work on your end is minimal.

You should just drop it off in the ghetto and use it as a bait car.

I recently donated a car to Purple Heart. Called them up and the very next day they sent out a tow truck to pick it up.

I would just like to mention that your car that you consider unsafe might be a very nice car for someone else. I buy cars all the time because some mechanic was trying to get money from them by telling them something that wasn't true or they don't understand how all cars require maintenance. If you donate your car it will most likely be sold to a junk yard for a few hundred dollars which in turn goes to someones paycheck. If you want to do something nice you could personally hand it down to someone who could value it.

We donated my old car here:

http://carshelpingveterans.org/veteran-car-donation-faq.php

It was super easy. I just called and set up a time for them to come out. I didn't even have to be there. Left the title and the key in the glove compartment. They towed the car and mailed the license plates back to me. A couple of months later I got the tax form I needed showing they sold it for $900 so I was able to claim that on my taxes. It was a '99 Mazda Protege that had a spare tire on it (some asshole STOLE MY FUCKING TIRE FROM MY CAR) and wasn't even running (battery dead). It had 150k miles and needed a new coat of paint (no rust...but the clear topcoat was peeling). To be honest, I was shocked they even got $900 for it. Ha ha ha!

Honestly, though, I was so happy to just get it off my hands and off my insurance. It wasn't worth the hassle of trying to sell.
