Backlick road

Any one know the origins of Backlick road? I know in the olden days a licken was a spanking. Maybe a back road. Just curious. Hope it wasn't named after anyone cause it's a funny name.

I did see it might be the salt licks placed by members of the Powhatan tribe.

Backlick Road is said to be named for the saltlicks placed by members of the Powhatan tribe along the nearby run to attract deer.

Don't remember where now, but I have seen old maps on the web that show the road as "Bad Luck Road." Maybe Backlick evolved from that somehow.
