Deconstruction of the old KMart is starting soon. Lots of information and drawings here:

Looking forward to it!

Google has the Fairfax city limit boundary just behind the old K-mart between Jermantown Rd. and Waples Mill. Old K-Mart bldg is in city limits. Line then follows Lee Hwy and turns south at Rust Rd. But agreed, Lowes should not locate within city limits. The extra regs and taxes aren't worth it.

Hope it runs Home Depot out of town......the worst ever....nobody can be found to answer a question, don't know inventory in their own store.....don't quite get the English language thing...competition is a good thing.......
NEW TOPIC.....how does this Aldi place stay in business.....what a total misfit......

Can't wait for Lowe's.. competition IS most certainly a good thing.

Re: Aldi's

I don't mind the store. We definitely can't do all our shopping there (wouldn't buy their meats/deli). But you can get some pretty quality stuff for dirt cheap (PB, cereal, german beer, etc.

As much as I would like to see a Lowe's closer than Chantilly, Twins Ace Hardware in Fairfax City is a great alternative to both Home Depot and Lowe's for most items. Yes, if you neeed the supplies to build a deck or a new bathroom fixture the big box stores are great, but Twins easily has 90-95% of what I need from those stores with helpful staff.

I especially like going there when I need something like a handful of screws or bolts. At Home Depot I might spend 10-15 minutes trying to find the right bin, but the staff at Twins gets me to the right item fast. Also really good when I need a small piece of plywood, not a full 4x8 sheet.

Is the selection as large? No...but how many furnace air filter or drill bit options do you need? The prices might be a bit higher, but you don't have to fight for a parking space.

A Bass Pro shop, Gander Mountain or Cabelas would do well and be much more useful. Lowes starts out with employees tripping over each, people on every aisle asking to help you and then a year later its like Home Depot, you have to hunt someone down to get help.

Gander Mountain just opened in Woodbridge, but I like your thinking. Unfortunately, I don't know that anyone of these outdoor stores would drive enough business sitting in the heart of Fairfax.

I cant imagine why they would build in Hoodbridge other than with all the recent shootings, firearms and ammo sales should be brisk.

Cheap rent. Duh. Gander Mountain, Bass Pro Shops, Cabela's, etc. are destination shopping venues. People will and do drive 25+ miles regularly to visit them and shop in them. The Fairfax market is covered by the store in Woodbridge.

Also, if you knew the history of the building that Gander Mountain went into, you'd have to assume they got the lease on the cheap. It was vacant for a couple of years and before that, it was struggling to maintain tenants at decent rates. If your not familiar with the now defunct Incredible Universe store, give it a Google.

Lowe's is better than that old POS k-mart, but the bar isn't very high. I prefer Home Depot to Lowe's. I see the complaints about Home Depot above. I used to be sour dealing with them but they have improved greatly.

If you ever end up buying there:
http://renovopower.com/lowes.html
(generates coupon codes - I get nothing from this)

My first choice is to buy it on Amazon with same-day/next-day delivery. Same-day is awesome but deliveries can be as late as 9pm. Amazon also doesn't work for drywall or little things.

For stuff that I don't get on Amazon, I buy everything online for in-store pickup. The stock has been accurate and I'm in and out in a few minutes. Lowe's either shows no stock in Chantilly or their prices are higher.

What do you need store people for nowadays? They help you find stuff, barely. Google gives better advice than retail workers. If I somebody knowledgable, I Google it anyway because they're working retail - they're not making bank using that knowledge. Online ordering means I don't have to trek back and forth through the store several times looking through disorganized shelves.

My one purchase from Lowes in the last five years was one item that was the same price everywhere - I used the discount code generator and got free delivery to my house.

I MUCH prefer Lowes to HD. Lowes seems to hire English speaking help. They never have a fork lift parked right where I need to go, and many other little things. I hated driving all the way to Chantilly or Alexandria though.

They also go out of their way to help you. I rarely need to talk to the help, but sometimes you have to.

Example: I was going to build one of those modular concrete garden walls, a big one-250+ blocks. Those fucking things are heavy, so it took several trips in a 3/4 ton pickup. There are cap blocks that you use to top off the wall, but since they are needed at the end of the project, I didn't get them then.

When I was ready for the cap blocks, there was an empty hole where they were on the rack. I ask an older white guy when they were getting more or if he could check for them at another store. He goes to his computer and says that entire style of wall has been discontinued. No longer available. Now I can't finish my damned wall! I said, "man, why the hell didn't post a sign on the rack that they were discontinued?. I'd have grabbed them while you still had them".

The guy said, "Give me your phone number and I'll call the manufacturer and see if there are any leftovers anywhere...how many do you need?". He called me back in a few hours and said they'll be there in a couple days and he'll call me.". A couple days later I had 'em. They even loaded them in my truck with the forklift.

This would never, in a million fucking years, have happened at Home Depot. Even if I brought along an interpreter to talk to the idiots!

I get the feeling that Home Depot depends more on contractor sales, so they don't try as hard.

Does lowes still have those buttons you can push to call for help? HATE searching around a dept. in home depot for help. Employees are never there when you need them.

You're lucky. Dumb, but lucky. You always get ALL of your supplies when you start, so you have everything and everything matches. Sometimes the manufacturer will change coloring or style and you're SOL. But Lowes does have great customer service.

Concrete garden walls are tacky. Save up and have a stone mason build you a dry stack wall you redneck.

That is not actually a Big Lots. It is the headquarters where the Kanamits meet to determine future plans.
