I'm sure I read recently a Fairfax county fire fighter was sacked because he had an affaire with a female vounteer. He lost his job and his pension. Is that true or is it garbage? Anyone got a link to the story?

It would be unheard of to take their pension...I am not even sure that is legal, since Fairfax Firefighters contribute to their pensions...I mean they caught JJ in the act on duty, and punished him by demoting him into what many consider the best job in the fire department ( Battalion Chief) and assigning him to one of the nicest battalion offices in the highly sought after 4th battalion.

So, unless this FF raped or assaulted the volunteer (basically committed a felony) I can't see them getting more than a transfer and some time off. Just my opinion, I could be wrong.

The usual gay sex between union firefighters and volunteers is permitted and in fact encouraged. But in this case, the firefighter went over the line and had a heterosexual encounter. That is not allowed!

All county employees contribute to their pensions at the same amout of firefighters, The police contribute more but dont pay social security, when they retire they have to get a job to get social security unless they had enough credits before joining the police.

If a person meets the age and service requirements to either early retirement with severe benefits loss of full retirement they can do so even if they get fired. If they dont have enough credits the county may allow them to resign and keep their money in the retirement system, They will not get the same benefits as full regular retirement but will get a benefit at age 65 for what ever number of years they had worked with the county within the retirement system.

If they are fired, Their retirement contributions are returned with interest that it earned and thats that.

Most people are allowed to resign. If they commit a crime that is a fireable offense or something very bad, then they will be fired.

Promotions with the FD are based somewhat on how many volunteers you've bagged - and shared with higher-ups.

Don't know them...the smirks on their faces make them look like smart asses though...they remind me of straubinger and gruendel, two pricks I worked with while in haz mat that preyed on volunteers. Good for her....using her valuable resources to make her way in the world... I don't fault the gal for using her sexuality to get what she wants... As a woman in this department I have worked very hard to progress through the system. I have been harassed, hit on, touched and just about everything you can imagine would happen to a woman in a man's fire department. I have earned the trust and the respect of my male counterparts through hard work and not having things given to me when I could have easily accepted a hand. Why would I do that? Because there are always strings attached and I didn't want there to ever be any doubt I would/could do things by my own dedication to the job. Girls like Kayla who come onboard and quite frankly slut themselves round, carry the air of a whore about them and work the EMS officers to get into paramedic school, among other things, make my life that much more difficult. Men automatically assume I will sleep with them while on shift because she puts out. They automatically assume I want their help with something when I can do it myself. If I don't sleep with them, I am a bitch or a lesbian. If I do I am a whore and a slut. I'd rather be known as a bitch rather than a whore and a slut any day.

Chauffeur is right... there is an attitude among the less evolved knuckle draggers in the fire department that "If she doesn't want to sleep with my studly, macho interior fireman ass, then she has to be a lesbian, because if she wasn't, she'd want some of this". Unfortunately, not a proud moment for the male species in general, but I've heard guys freely espouse this very idea.

There is a parallel theorem that if a woman is able to do well and hold her own, then she must be a lesbian. I don't know how long Chauffeur has been in the FD, but she would be a better gauge of the current climate. In my years of service, I did see some small changes in the perception of women in the FD.

In general, women are more accepted in EMS. Unfortunately there are many who still believe that if a woman is holding her, progressing and getting promoted on the suppression side she is either a lesbian or sleeping with someone.

By the grace of God, I was quite successful in my career and kept all of my study material. I loaned a couple of my highlighted books to a woman in the promotional process; by the reaction of a few people, you would have thought I sold government secrets to the communists. (I know...the cold war is over...I'm dating myself). Several "firemen" (I use that term loosely) actually stopped associating with me because I "was helping one of THEM get promoted"

I once had an attractive young lady who had about 4 years on the job assigned to me as an paramedic intern. She had had several assignments and was labeled as "trouble". She not only completed her internship, but excelled with no problems or trouble at all.

It is a sad state of affairs, when doing her final evaluation after working with my unit and station for 6 months she didn't want to leave; she said that was the only time in her career (including recruit school, her probationary year, paramedic school and several station assignments) she was treated well, not ostracized from the group, and not hit on or propositioned.

True professional, sure to be a great paramedic. Hope your career is worth it guys.

I'm curious what Winters charged her for her paramedic school recommendation. Was it just past services rendered or did he get a whole new session/sessions? Guditus probably signed it as a matter of procedure or was told to. There are not many volunteer paramedics and denying entry to the class to a woman this controversial is probably a battle the upper management didn't want to fight.
