Attention all parents of the FCPS system.

If you have

A) Ownership of a home worth over $ 250,000,
B) Own or lease a car with a book value over $ 15,000,
C) Own a smart phone with a calling plan of 50 dollars or more per month
D) Subscribe to any cable or Fios or internet service costing over 50 per month
E) Get your nails or hair done for over $ 50 per month, or
F) Own a TV less than 3 year old and bigger than 50 inches.

GUESS WHAT ?? You Can PAY FOR your OWN DAMN KIDS LUNCH.

PAY for the school's lunch program or PACK one for junior at home.

STOP living large and making the Fairfax taxpayer feed your kid.

BE A PARENT.

Don't rely on the damn government to raise your kid while you
spend money on luxury item.

This is a public service announcement from reality.

^ That describes 90% of Fairfax (except for our friends from South of the border and people in what passes as 'the projects' around here). I don't understand how the cheaters can live with themselves. I think most of us would support whatever it takes to monitor this program and bring it under control.

So in reality that describes about 30% of Fairfax. Maybe you should walk into an elementary school some time and just take a look around. Things are different now amigo.

Those rich kids are not all at your local public elementary school.

You don't get it, they do not verify ANY information on the forms. And they don't care , its easier to just rubber stamp it

If you look at the numbers, from a financial standpoint why would they? They get about the same amount of money from the Feds for a free lunch student as they get in combined payments from a full pay student. They also get a certain amount of free food products as well. The nightmare scenario for the FCPS food program isn't that everyone might suddenly be getting free lunches. It is that everyone would suddenly start bringing their lunches.

What FCPS doesn't realize though is that tying other financial benefits to qualification for free and reduced lunches is creating a PR nightmare, and not just among tea party types.

Again, good intentions. Who want kids to be hungry?

The problem is that we now have this massive program that actually creates incentives for fraud. Schools can only check a max of 3% of applicants. If families are ineligible, or fully eligible, they only lose the benefit. There is no penalty. As structured, everyone could apply and receive the benefit and at most 3% would lose the benefit.

As Bill notes, schools want a max number of FARM kids from a narrow financial standpoint: the federal government gives them extra money for each kid.

One article posted on a related threat showed that 91% of Los Angeles students who were checked lost at least part of the benefit. Some probably should have had FARM anyway, but this gives some indication of the extent of fraud.

The same is true in the food stamp program and disability program. Very high percentages of expenditures of taxpayer money in these programs are fraudulent. Obviously the same is the case with Obamacare.

Also, it creates a culture of dependence. Why is the work participation rate the highest ever? Why get up a go to a low-wage job when you can just game the system and do similarly?

Why aren't parents required to provide some proof of income (e.g., W-2)? I understand the disincentives for the school system to audit claims, but why doesn't the county?

Actually it's 3% to a max of 3000. So in FCPS, it would only be 3000 of the 186,000 or so students, so only 1.61% could be checked.

Because then they'd have to provide proof that they're legal in the first place. It's kind of a snow ball effect.

Posters are forgetting the OP's point.

Most parents of kids on the free lunch program have cell phones, cars, nails done, calbe tv, etc. They care more about luxury than their kids. SAD.

All school lunches are supsidise by the Feds
That's why it's so cheap if you go eat with your kid you will pay more, the actual price without subsidies

Yes, and the Obama administration really has no incentive to catch fraud and abuse in any of these entitlement programs. A dependent person is a dependent person. It does not really matter if they are entitled to a benefit or not. If someone is receiving food stamps fraudulently, would they vote for someone who wanted to cut the food stamp program or who vowed to reduce fraud? Of course not, they would vote for someone promising more benefits.
