Do I need a permit for drywall?
Posted by: Johnny ()
Date: August 07, 2014 03:14PM

I would like to put up some drywalls for my garage. The two walls have no electrical outlets, wires, or pipes of any sort. I just want to have some fire block and reduce the noise from the neighbor's AC. Do you know whether I need a permit?

I also want to tile my basement. Do you know whether I need a permit for that? I'm not adding any additional walls or anything, just tiles.

Yes, you definitey need a permit for that. Please send a brief description of the planned work along with the $5000 application fee to Sharon Bulova's office (address available on the govt website). Mark the envelope "Personal and Confidential"

Complete waste of internet space, and quite possibly a human existence.

A permit is required for most new residential and commercial construction. Use the list below to help you determine if your project requires a building permit. If your project is not listed or you need help determining if a permit is required, please contact the Permit Application Center by email or telephone at 703-222-0801

I dont think you can pick up a sheet of drywall. If you can I would insulate with foam and use 5/8 inch.

You could easily call your local, helpful govt official for this answer (God knows there are hundreds available there). I guess you don't want the answer they might tell you, so you are looking for validation from here in case you get busted. Man-up and just do it - and fuck the permits and Fairfax inspectors.

You don't need a permit, don't even ask. It's just sheet rock, but you may want to put in a few outlets for future use. You'll regret it if you don't. Don't listen to a bunch of chiefs that are trying to throw humor at you.

Even if they did, they can fuck themselves, I have done tons of little things without permits. Fuck em.

They wanted me to get a permit to change my fucking stove, FUCK YOU!! Did that shit without a permit, same with my gas water heater.

Illegal spics are flooding the USA and the tax money taken from your paycheck is paying for the illegals.

Yet you might get fined for not having a permit.

If the outlets are already there, do I need a permit? If I install new outlets, I definitely need a permit, right?

no

assuming your not covering up a wall that an inspector didn't yet see (which is ok, if you want the wall torn back off)

My bet is probably not and yes. However why don't you just call the number I posted earlier and ask them. In theory what they say has greater validity than what a bunch of strangers post on the internet. Or are you simply seeking to have others confirm what you intend to do anyways?

You don't need a permit just for drywall, although I'm curious why you're only doing 2 walls. If you are using your garage as a workshop, I'd add insulation as well. This will also help with soundproofing. Also, I agree with the posters who suggest adding a couple of outlets (Which you will need a permit/inspection for). If you are just parking cars in it, I'd add a couple of 15-amp outlets, just for convenience. However, if you are doing any auto maintenance or heavy tool-work in there, I'd definitely put in a 20-amp circuit.

No permit needed for that.

Pull a permit and watch what your real estate assessment does next year. Yeah, right, it's for safety, just like red light cameras. The big reason to do it is to cover yourself on an insurance claim that the company might suspect was due to the non-permitted work to get out of paying (like replacing a gas stove or water heater). If you know what you're doing and you think the work will never generate an insurance claim, ignore the permit.

If you don't disturb the existing work then no you wouldn't need an electrical permit. The only requirement for garages would be GFCI outlets (or GFCI breaker) -- there is no particular number required (or specific locations). In theory, new electrical work would need to be inspected before installing drywall over it.

Would doing the work without a permit put the homeowners insurance policy in default?

Only if you use drywall that's not permitted. Chinese firewall, for instance.

If it's an attached garage one wall probably already has fire-rated drywall (or perhaps I shoudl say, should have). Since one opening is a door, there are only two walls that will need drywall.
