Hard to say what they will offer, but the retention team members receive a bonus for "saves" since the cost of acquiring a new customer is at least 10x greater than keeping an existing one. The recent Comcast incident which went viral is a case in point...poorly executed, but the rep was doing his job.
Best strategy is not to start with something like "I am thinking about switching providers, what can you offer?". Are you considering Cox? If so, understand what they are offering new customers...it is probably a sweet deal...and see if Verizon will match it. Likely something along the lines of HBO & Showtime with a 50% discount for 12 months plus a $15-20 monthly bill credit during the contract term (typically 24 months).
In addition, there is a monthly bill credit if you work for Fairfax County/FCPS.
