Pierce's Pitt is the best -- but you have to travel to Williamsburg

As others have correctly pointed out, you'll have to travel outside of FFX/Arl/Alex to get any decent 'Q. Otherwise it's pretty much overcooked meats w/lots of sugary sauces.

That place is the worst. If you're going that way, go to Q BBQ

Best BBQ in NOVA? That's like asking for the best chainsaw you can buy at Bath & Body Works.

Barbecue and northern Virginia? Does not compute.

At least not after Ben's Whole Hog closed.

Pit Stop in Aldie, VA, at the cross roads of Rte 50 and Rte 15
They're only open on weekends and they sell out of most of their food except for ribs before 1pm.

Yep, but I'll give my answer again: Magic Mike, only available on sunday at the farmer's market in The Plains. Outstanding. Get there early before he sells out of baby backs.

I like to think I look a bit more like the Magic Mike from the movie and not the one who sells barbecue. They are distinctive.

There is a weekend pit cooker in Aldie, VA that puts out some pretty good BBQ. Otherwise there is just nothing excellent in the area.

I second the vote for Pierce's Pitt just outside of Williamsburg at the Lightfoot exit. It is incredible BBQ!

I second the Pit Stop in Aldie. It's at Gilbert's Corner, just off of the roundabout.
Virginia Barbeque is pretty good, too--they have a few different locations.

Hands down, Dixie Bones is the best barbecue restaurant in the area. And, yes, it was a shame when Ben's closed. VA Barbecue Country briefly had an outlet in the Hybla Valley of all places. They didn't come close to Dixie Bones' awesomeness, but they were pretty good. But talk about a bad location.

Other than Dixie Bones, I hate to say it, but in this area, your best bets are Shanes and Famous Daves. Not so much for the quality of their barbecue, but due to the dull, New Jerseyish nature of this area.

Roadside stands in this area? Meh. There's one out past Gainesville that is just sort of passable. There was one who showed up at Springfield Mall once that was just okay. There used to be one in Stafford (not sure that counts as NOVA) that was inconsistent. There was a decent one out in Rappahannock County (definitely not NOVA), but I think they went out of business.

I kind of gave up on trying the weekend/roadside ones in this area as they've all been pretty unimpressive.

I may take a trip to the Aldie one, based on the reviews. But those reviews are all from tasteless Yuppies so who knows?

Famous Dave's is the worst, premium prices for terrible BBQ. Fall off the bone? Try gnaw off the bone. I hadn't been there in a couple years and made the mistake of forgetting why.

Texas Roadhouse is worth the extra drive to the far side of the county.

Tried some this weekend - excellent chicken and ribs, but I've still got to give the edge to Magic Mike (sundays only at the farmer's market in the Plains).

Bad to the Bone (in Gainesville) is pretty solid too. A hair below Rocklands but still miles ahead of most everyone else.

Bacon's is really good, In the old Ben's bbq/Absolute bbq (sic) restaurant bldg in Manassas Park. best ribs at Pit Stop in Aldie or Johnny Boys in La Plata, MD. Bacon's ribs really good, too! Skip Pierces in Williamsburg, no good, same with Willard's...no smoke flavor.

No shit. I only stop there for gas on my way into work, well before the store opens. I can't believe idiots who spend 30-45 minutes there on weekends to save 10 cents or so versus the neighboring Sunoco station. Holy shit.
